Oh, and I love Madonna's "What if feels like for a girl"
It addresses how girls/women have to play down their talents and be demure to win acceptance. And how the term girl has devolved to a derogatory epithet. lyrics go "When you're trying hard to be your best could you be a little less Do you know what it feels like for a girl?" and "When you open up your mouth to speak, Could you be a little weak " The first time I heard this song I was almost moved to tears because it softly but powerfully conveys struggle for girls and women to move beyond traditional stereotypes of being fragile and frivolous.

I'm not saying we men have it the same as women, but a stereotype is a stereotype, whoever it is aimed at. I get sick of all these " all men are b*stards" comment I see on the org...Am I wrong or what? [Edited 10/28/04 5:23am]

Do you people really consider some of these songs mentioned here "feminist"? Seriously?

Unfortunately, no.
But I'll just call one song out: Miss Independent by Kelly Clarkson. Sorry, JanFan4L, but this song is insulting. It essentially suggests that women who act all tough and independent willchange once they fall in love. That every independent girl is just looking for the right man to change her into soft puddy who'll want her doors opened for her and a big strong man to rescue her. Lyrics go "WHAT HAPPENED TO MISS INDEPENDENT ... ooh, she fell in love." The words actually mock female independence.

Men degrade themselves by associating manhood with primitive charasterics like mindless sex, rough philistine behavior, and lack of manners. Indeed songs of male empowerment are needed. Hopefully they will celebrate the need to rise above such images. Men are not their d*cks alone, as some pop culture art portrays.
