Bowie's latest : "Reality".

So what do you think of Bowies latest offering? As a long time fan i've listened with great interest, concluding it's a "nice" one.The DVD with the album shows the first Performance of Reality , similcast to theatres around the world.Cool idea i thought. Go to a cinema and see a "live performance" in realtime. Bowie as always imaginative and ground breaking with his techniques and approach. It took me a couple of listens to get a positive response myself; at 1st I thought it a bit lame. Seen him live in concert twice, long while back.

Was cool to see Earl Slick(guitar) from Bowies past; on the DVD, and the major talent collected here. Like Gail Ann Dorsey on bass guitar, and "space" guitar from Gerry Leonard. I heard David B. has had heart problems, and got a lollipop stick caught up in his "bad" eye eek ..... hmmm If you've heard it how'd you like it?

It took me a few listens, and also seeing it live helped, but I think it is a solid, 4-star album.

I put it on a par with Heathen.

Like Me'shell Ndege'ocello on bass guitar(who isn't listed on the cover notes at all ! ), and "space" guitar from Gerry Leonard. I heard David B. has had heart problems on tour and haven't caught up with the latest as yet. If anyone knows fill me in. hmmm If you've heard it how'd you like it?

I think it's rubbish - mostly rushed, throwaway songs that sound like "Heathen" outtakes.

On my first listen, I was nonplussed too. I guess cuz Heathen set the bar so high. But then I started to take it for what it is. And I really, really like it. It's got great energy and was meant to be played live. Much more than the Heathen stuff. And I was lucky enough to see the material premiered live @ The Chance in Poughkeepsie about a month before the album came out. It was great to see my musical hero right in front of me in a small, sweaty club in summer with a capacity of only about 500. You could tell even then by his look and the "thrustiness" of the band, that he was ready to hit the road. I even got to meet him before the show. What an awesome, humble, beautiful person he is.

It's much better live..On record there's 2 much of a 'ditty'
thing going on.. .Nile Rodgers was on TV here in Belgium
(2 months ago) he said he was gonna work on a 'project' with
Bowie somewhere in 2005... .

i like it a lot. it's not a classic Bowie album (though it does have a classic Bowie sound). seems like a nice, upbeat companion to the superior Heathen. which is fine.

I saw a few tracks live on Australian T.V.and yeh, sounded and felt better than the DVD, actually he played "The Man Who Sold The World", (Nirvana did that on their un-plugged thingo!) , people it was fine.Yes ConRoz he can still do his early stuff, his vocal range is a little weaker, but who's isn't after 20 or so years. wink

Thanks for the wallpaper! lol

Basically it's fantastic to see any Artist with the credentials of David Bowie still doing his thing. He really did open a lot of doors musically for people up to the late 80's, and deserves credit.People such as Prince has obviously benefitted from Bowie's Avante Garde approach in his earlier work, with his fashion sense, and open minded experimental stuff; plus record company negotiations.

Personally i like the Albums he did with Fripp & Eno, like "Heroes", and "Scary Monsters".

No way dude. He sounds better than ever. Overall, his voice has deepened, but the expression and power in his performance is at an all time high. I think quitting smoking in 2002 made a big difference.

"Reality" is just the upbeat companion album to "Heathen" in my opinion (much like "Lodger" is to "Low" And "Heroes"). A bit throwaway-ish compared to it, but I think he was just in a very creative, "energized" (as he would himself put it) mood and felt the album was enough good to be released. Think it could have benefitted from some extra work to it, but it's fine as it is. The two extra songs fetured on the limited edition bonus CD could have just as well been on the actual album, though.
