80s Classic of the day: "Buffalo Stance" by Nenah Cherry (1989)

So I'm watching BET and a show called "Grown Folks Music" comes on.This show is focused on Old School music videos, mostly 80s stuff. And boy I was surprised when they showed Nenah Cherry's "Buffalo Stance" video! I had not seen it since 1989.Back then,I was a huge fan of this song. The song is catchy and fun,and you gotta love the colorful video. It was a refreshing track to hear....a slick dance track with a little "hip hop flava" thrown in.One of 1989's most impressive singles.

headbang "Buffalo Stance" (1989) headbang

by Nenah Cherry

(written by Nenah Cherry,Booga Bear,Phil Ramacon and Jamie Morgan)

Ladies and gentlemen
I'd like to introduce the High Hat
Go on,mmm,that's good
Now tambourine,right now
Mmm,hoo,yeah,deejay

(rap)
Who's that gigolo on the street
with his hands in his pockets and his crocodile feet
Hangin' off the curb lookin' all disturbed
as the boy comes home, they all came runnin'
They were making noise,man,havin'toys
just the girls on the block with the nasty curls
Wearin' padded bras,suckin'beer through straws
Up and down their drawers, well, did you get yours

Gigolo (huh,sucka)
Gigolo
Gigolo (huh,sucka)
Gigolo

(verse)
He's lookin'good today
He's lookin' good in every way
No style for keeps
You better watch, don't mess with me

(chorus)
No money man can win my love
it's sweetness that I'm thinkin' of
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
we do the dive everytime we dance
I'll give you love baby, not romance
I'll make a move,nothin' left to chance
so don't you get fresh with me

Get funky
Yeah,Timmy
Tell it like it is
Check out this deejay

(rap)
So you say you wanted money, but you know it's never funny
when your shoes worn through and there's a rumble in your tummy
but you had to have style, get a gold tooth smile
put a girl on the corner so you could make a pile
Committed a crime and went inside
It was comin' your way but you had to survive
when you lost your pay,you lost the race
now you're lookin' at me to take her place

(verse)
He's lookin' good today
He's lookin' good in every way
No style for keeps
You better watch, don't mess with me

(chorus)
No money man could win my love
it's sweetness that I'm thinkin' of
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
we do the dive everytime we dance
I'll give you love baby, not romance
I'll make a move,nothin' left to chance
so don't you get fresh with me

Smoke it
now toke it
yeah,funky sax

Lookin' good, hangin' with the wild bunch
lookin' good in a Buffalo Stance
lookin' good when it comes to de-crunch
lookin' good is a state of mind

State of mind, don't look behind you
State of mind,or you'll be dead
State of Mind, may I remind you
put down the bass...rock this place

What's he like? What's he like anyway?
Yo man,what do you expect
The man's a gigolo,man (laugh)
you know what I mean?

repeat chorus

The wind on my face, sound in my ears
Ready for my eyes and use my mind
As I slip,divin' down deep
deeper into your soul

No money man could win my love
it's sweetness that I'm thinkin' of
No money man could win my love
it's sweetness that I'm thinkin' of

No money man could win my love
No money man could win my love
No money man could win my love
No money man could win my love

No money man

I remember that jam when I first started going to clubs really hot and heavy. It's a great song. After some kinda dead years from 1985-1989, this song came out right before house/dance music really blew up from 1989 until around 1993.

I thought funky dance music had died and gone for good and then we had this nice little wave for a few short years. I'm still waiting for the next wave to come along. biggrin

In 1989,he was in the studio with Cat (Prince's dancer),producing tracks for her solo album 'I Am Energy'.The album was never released, but a single emerged from these sessions ("CatWoman").

btw, what exactly is a "buffalo stance"? lol

I loved this video and song. When she says:

The wind on my face, sound in my ears
Ready for my eyes and use my mind
As I slip,divin' down deep
deeper into your soul

I can remember her voice doing things to my innocent little brain and body (I was 11)...

And on this part, her accent is so freaking cute, it kills:
What's he like? What's he like anyway?
Yo man,what do you expect
The man's a gigolo,man (laugh)
you know what I mean?

Great song! The video doesn't age well, tho. biggrin

What gets me about this song is that she introduces each instrument...high hat, tambourine, funky sax...and they're all synth! Either that or processed to all hell. Great chorus, and the ending on the album version is rally advanced, melodically, for a radio pop song.

That song is the Jam! Not sure about introducing the hi-hat or tamborine lol

I just picked up Raw like Sushi...a fantastic album. Definitely a precursor to girl hip hop. It still sounds quite fresh even now. Usually can find it in the cut out bins. Definitely worth a pick up.

Good song, but the rest of the album was better imo. I must have played
that record a million times when it just came out. I had the maxi single
of "Kisses On The Wind" too. I've lost it since sad

I never understood its appeal. The song has no bottom whatsoever.

I loved that song and whenever I hear it, I got blast it. I remember that I had the cover of "Buffalo Stance" as my avatar for a while when I rediscovered the song. It's a shame I don't have the CD. Probably dirt cheap on the net...gotta go!
