How is Donna Summer's Bad Girls 2-CD Deluxe Edition

I was just looking for some Donna Summer stuff and I just came up with the 2003 deluxe reissue of Bad Girls. I listening to some of the samples and it sounds pretty good. Is it really a must buy because it's probably the first DS album I ever brought or listened to. How do you feel about it.

Buy it. They screwed up the mastering on a few tracks on the second disc, but it's a really good package.

I already have Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" and "The 12 Inch Dance Collection". I remember seeing the track list from the deluxe edition of "Bad Girls" and not buying it because it contained tracks that I already have on "The 12 Inch Dance Collection".

I can't remember, is the 12 Inch of "Love To Love You Baby" on there? Now, that's one I don't have.

No it's not vainandy. It's great. I'd buy because the quality of the songs are excellent plus it's a kickass album. It's become one of my favorite albums ever.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

"I FeeL Love" (12" version)
"Last Dance" (12" version)
"MacArthur Park Suite"
"Hot Stuff" (12" version)
"Bad Girls" (12" version)
"Walk Away" (promotional 12" version)
"Dim All The Lights" (12" version)
"No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) with Barbra Streisand (12" version)
"On The Radio" (Long version from the "Foxes" soundtrack)

This is a pretty good CD to have, especially if you don't already have 'The Dance Collection'.My only complaint is that they didn't include the rare extended version of "Heaven Knows".

Thanks. I already have "The Dance Collection" so I have all of these songs already. I noticed in another post, you mentioned that the album contains a demo version of "Bad Girls". I may have to check that out.

I have the long version of "Heaven Knows" on a disco compilation disc around here somewhere. The one I am dying to find is the long 17 minute version of "Love To Love You Baby".

Go to one of the on-line vendors (CDUNIVERSE,for example) and you can hear a clip of the demo version of "Bad Girls".It's much different than the released version.

Yeah,I have that long version of "Heaven Knows" on a disco compilation too.It must be rare, because I never see it on any of Donna's own compilations.

The 17-minute version of "Love To Love You Baby" is easy to find. You can get the 'Love To Love You Baby' album on CD,or you can find it on the 4-CD Casablanca Records box set. It's also available on the 3-CD Donna Summer box set "The Ultimate Collection" which came out last year.Although this set is flawed in many ways,it does contain rare tracks that aren't always easy to find, such as "Theme From The Deep","The Hostage" and "Lady Of The Night".

One good thing about "The Dance Collection" is...

It contains the rare, promo extended version of "With Your Love".As far as I know, that song is not available anywhere else except the 'Thank God It's Friday' movie soundtrack (where it appears in a shorter version).

Was the 17 minute version the album version? I always assumed it was a 12 Inch. If that's the case, I've been looking in the wrong place all along.

Damn! Now, ain't that a bitch?! I've been looking for a 12 Inch all these years when it's been on the album all along. Like I said, with it being 17 minutes and all, I just assumed it was a 12 Inch.

Thanks. I will be in the record store this weekend. biggrin

Thanks Finess. That's what I get from making assumptions. lol Speaking of the first 12 Inch, I love mixing and I know you do also. I had always assumed that mixing started in the disco era, but I was looking through a disco site and discovered that a guy from New York first started mixing as early as 1969. I think his name was Francis but I can't remember. I've been trying to think of his name so I can search the internet and learn some more about him.

Francois Kervorkian,Elmo the Magic christian,Monty Rock III,Pioneers of mixing back then we used 45's it was a killer wrestling with 45s to get them to not train wreck. ripped many a finger nail, slurred many a record slightly, we had no pitch controls and everything was Live drummers.

I remember reading about this guy and one site said there were no pitch controls, which I knew, but it also said that he couldn't touch the record. I can't imagine a turntable where you can't touch the record. Even if you couldn't touch the side of the record, you can still touch the label to slow it down.

Anyway, the site said that as his skills eventually progressed, he could mix two certain records with no pitch control and never touching the record for as long as two minutes before the beats would start to get away from each other.

I read about him too. They also mentioned Frankie Knuckles and some other guys. Now I remember, I think his name was Francis Grusso.

I started out in a disco site and got a link to DJs and totally left the disco site and went from one DJ link to another. lol

Being from the South, I had heard Frankie Knuckles named mentioned on TV but really didn't know who he was. I had seen Larry's name mentioned on several records, especially in the thanks section.

It wasn't until I got the internet that I started discovering who these guys were. I had heard DJs mix a little bit in the skating rink when I was younger and in a few clubs when I got older. Sometimes friends would come back from either New York or Chicago with mix tapes and I would be blown away by those mixes. These guys down here are strictly amateurs and have NOTHING on those guys there. biggrin

It's a great set.The first disc contains the entire "Bad Girls" album, remastered and sounding better than ever. There is also a demo version of the song "Bad Girls" and it's just superb....with alternate lyrics and a more soulful arrangement.

The second disc is basically just another copy of 'The Dance Collection' (a 1987 compilation of her 12" singles from the 70s).You get the long extended versions of her late-70s hits, beginning with "I Feel Love" and going all the way to "Enough Is Enough" and "On The Radio".This disc includes the entire 'MacArthur Park Suite' as well as a rare extended version of "Walk Away".

In addition, the packaging is fantastic....glossy photos just like on the original album! As a kid,I remember being overwhelmed by the provocative photos inside the album cover...lol...this CD reissue is packaged similarly to the original album.

Actually, it isn't the full Macarthur Park Suite. It's edited by 10 seconds, and has some different segues (if I'm not mistaken it's the Heaven Knows part that gets cut). The real one runs 17:47, and can be found on The Dance Collection. Also, they mastered the 12'' version of Walk Away in mono (WHY? WHY???), and it sounds pretty bad.

LOL...on a Donna Summer forum,we were complaining that,on many of these compilations, they always use the wrong "MacArthur Park Suite".They use a slightly edited one instead of the original one that appears on the 1978 2-LP set "Live And More" (this one also appears on the 'Dance Collection' that you mentioned). In addition to those edits on the song "Heaven Knows",they also edit the track "One Of A Kind",although it's a slight edit.I prefer to hear this suite in it's original form, with no edits or changes.

Have you gotten any of the other "Deluxe Edition" CDs from Universal? The packaging is similar to other CDs in this series. It folds out and you get the original photos that appeared in the regular vinyl album 2-LP set (old schoolers will know what I mean...lol).There are also some rare photos of the actual master recording of this album!
