I have been a fan of real gangsta rap since it began. I have seen it all, from the wanna-be's to the realest of the real. I can pretty much tell who is who just by their first single. But there is one thing I am still confused as hell about...

Is DJ Quik a gangsta or not?

I have come to the conclusion that he is choc-full-o- shit. He came onto the scene daring people to try him so they could suffer his wrath and the wrath of his homies. He bragged about slangin', smokin and drinkin. He even put out more than a few threats of murder and violence. Claimed Tree Top Hood and dressed in all red, claimed Spruce Street.

And then he released "You'z a Gangsta". In the song he claimed that he is not a gangsta and has been misinterpreted his ENITRE CAREER. (Can you believe that shit? ) "There's a difference between being a thug and being down." he claimed.

I still love me some Quik, but I lost much respect for his flip-flopping ass. I wish he would make up his damn mind.

That's like asking if Nas is a "gangsta". He is thuggish at times, but he's not Mack 10, or whoever.

Same as Quik. He's a musician first. Are you serious that you've "lost respect" for Quik b/c he no longer wants to associate himself with immature, murderous lyrics? That's what I love about a lot of the rappers I loved growing up: The fact that they've grown up as I have. They have matured, and brought hip hop along for the ride.

Why should he talk about being a 'gangsta', if he's not? Everyone talks about 'keeping it real', yet you 'lose respect' for him for it?
