The Cars Another one of my favorite bands, The Cars were one of the best late 70's through mid 80's pop/rock/new wave bands. Ric Ocasek was/is a great songwriter, who wrote very catchy hooks and melodies. The Cars consisted of a good group of musicians as well. Elliot Easton is a fave guitarist of mine. The Cars were one of the few bands that made that crucial transition from the 70's into the 80's. If anything, the became even more popular with having very smart videos on MTV.
Great Cuts: Dangerous Type Since You're Gone You're Just What I Needed Let's Go Tonight She Comes Magic Drive Best Friend's Girlfriend Good Times Roll You Might Think You're All I've Got Tonight Shake It Up Who else digs this band? Love them!!! Have a greatest hits on vinyl that I still play. They were the first New Wave I was into. Too bad Ben Orr is now deceased, would make for a great reunion.

"You're All I've Got Tonight," the demo version. That's my favorite. I have it on a compilation called "Mass Avenue, The Boston Scene 1975-83." It's a great disc, beside the Cars it has Mission of Burma, The Lyres, and a lot more good bands that I can't think of right now. Wish I had it with me.

The Cars were oh sooooo Coooool!
Elliot Easton almost made my list of "Guitarist that made me re-examine my playing"! I loved his whimsical/almost comical persona! He had a nerdish competence about him! I have his solo album(vinyl LP) and Ric Ocasik's solo project! I think I had Benjamin Orr's solo project also. From what I remember "Shake It Up" was my favorite album(aside from their mainstream success of Heartbeat City) w "Since You're Gone" grabbing my attention! "Let's Go" from the album, Candy "O was also nice! GGD

That's a song that I have been in love with the first time I heard it. Elliot's solo on that is fucking COLDBLOODED!!! The tone, his feel, the way he stops all of a sudden and then starts up again! Man, that is a MAJESTIC solo! SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I didn't even know he had passed on. I'm sorry to hear that. Id hoped maybe VH1's 'Bands Reunited' would try to get The Cars back together sometime.

in honor of this thread, i picked up Gregory Orr's solo CD "The Lace" - which includes STay the Night, his only solo Top 40 hit. Pretty interesting mid-80's stuff.... I loved his voice on "DRIVE". I wonder if The Lace is out of print.... I found it in a used shop for $5.00. Anybody know?

Love The Cars! They made some of the best, most catchy pop/new wave tunes of the 70s and 80s. You're Just What I Needed is, to me, their best track. Superb!

I always found it odd that my favorite Cars' track is Drive as it's not fronted by Ric, but I love Ric, and I love The Cars. I really like the two tracks Ric produced on No Doubt's Rock Steady album. "She made me glad to be a man"

I have to show myself in this thread because the Cars were just there all around me during my teen-induced state. I grew out of them -- they seemed kind of light -- but in retrospect, their songs hold up very well. And they sure do carry me back.

From grade school through high school, The Cars were always with me. From my first serious makeout sessions, there was "You're Just What I Needed" to a little more progression (wet jeans love), there was "Let's Go". My favorite Cars song "Since You're Gone" was in the background definately when the sex came. "Drive" was there during the breaking up and making up again. Man, I can feel the pain and the knot in my chest and stomach from those days when it was still pure. The Cars to me were a majestic band. Their feel on some songs were grandoise."Dangerous Type" "Tonight, She Comes" "Drive" and "Since You're Gone" are all haunting and whimsical at the same time. And I love that combination to death.
