Any Brazilian Music Fans?

any fans of Brazilian Music? Samba, Bossa Nova, or Brazillian-Jazz?

Besides Antonio Carlos Jobim(The " George Gershwin" of Brazil, and one of the main architects of Bossa Nova), These are some of my favorites:

Djavan

This composer, singer and Guitarist's songs have been recorded by Al Jarreau, Carmen McRae, The Manhattan Transfer( who recorded his songs as "Soul Food To Go" and "So You Say"), and other artists.
He recorded Djavan (1979), Alumbramento (1980), and Seduzir (1981). In 1982, he signed with CBS, recorded Luz in the U.S. (produced by Ronnie Foster), where he made many contacts and Recorded and played with the likes of Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Marcus Miller, Michael Franks, Dave and Don Gruisin, and Nathan East . In 1984, he recorded Lilás , Meu Lado(1986), and Bird of Paradise (1988) Puzzle of Hearts (1990), Coisa de acender (1991),and Novena (1994). Malásia(1996), Bicho Solto(1998) . In 1999, his live album, "Ao Vivo" in two volumes. Roberta Flack's song" His Name, Brazil" was dedicated to him...

Ivan Lins

Renowned as a songwriter, vocalist, and pianist, Ivan Lins came to fame in Brazil in 1970 when Elis Regina recorded his song "Magdalena" for a hit. His worldwide debut, A Noite, appeared in 1979. Lins' most famous compositions, like "Love Dance" ("Lembrança"), has been recorded by dozens of jazz artists, including George Benson,, Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Nancy Wilson, Mark Murphy, Diane Schuur, Kenny Burrell, and James Blood Ulmer. Other noted songs by Lins ("The Island", , "Velas", "Comecar de Novo," "Dona Palmeira," "Nocturna") have been recorded by artists including Quincy Jones, Patti Austin, Dave Gruisin, Lee Ritenour, Airto Moreira, Herbie Mann, and Terence Blanchard.
In 2000 the album,"Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins" featured such artists as Chaka Khan, Sting, Vanessa Williams, Brenda Russell, Dianne Reeves, Lisa Fischer, and Nat's brother,Freddy Cole all paying tribute and covering Ivan's songs,,,

Milton Nascimento

International singing superstar and songwriter Milton Nascimento's songs have touched audiences all over the world. He has played with and inspired artists such as Sting, Earth Wind And Fire, Wayne Shorter, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Branford Marsalis, Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, etc...
In 1972 he collaborated with fellow lyricists Marcio Borges, Fernando Brant, Ronaldo Bastos and other friends to record Clube Da Esquina, a double album that spurred three hit singles, including "Cais (Dock)" and "Cravo e Canela (Clove and Cinnamon)", which have become standards in Brazil over the years.
On The album "Native Dancer", he joined saxophonist Wayne Shorter in a synthesis between Nascimento's voice and compositons with Shorter's saxophone and writing. That album helped to solidify Nascimento's place on the international jazz and pop scene in the 1970s. Two of his compositions, including "Porta De Area" became the "Brazilian Rhymes" on Earth Wind and Fire's All n' All album.
George Duke's 1979 album " Brazilian Love Affair" was a Collaboration Between himself and Milton...
His music has always carried an eternally optimistic spirit. Nascimento has written and recorded more than 30 albums over the years. His output has always been steady but never predictable. Equally at home in jazz and pop, Nascimento has a deep need to keep musically challenging himself.

Dori Caymmi

Dori Caymmi is an internationally celebrated composer and singer, having an expressive production recorded by many important artists worldwide, along with a prominent career as an arranger and producer, having also written music for soundtracks.
His songs, like "O Cantador" ("Like a lover"), has been recorded by many artists such as Earl Klugh, Anita Baker, Sergio Mendes, Flora Purim, Natalie Cole, and Sarah Vaughan,., and has played with Gary Taylor, Raymond Jones, Larry Coryell, Billy Cobham, and Branford Marsalis,

Sérgio Mendes

For most of the second half of the '60s, Sergio Mendes was the top-selling Brazilian artist in the United States, charting huge hit singles and LPs that regularly made the Top Five. His records with his group Brasil '66 regularly straddled the domestic pop and international markets in America through A&M records, Herb Alpert's label . During this period, he became an international music star and one of the most popular musicians in South America.

He made his first recording, Dance Moderno, in 1961 . By 1962, Mendes and his band were playing at Birdland in New York in an impromptu performance with Cannonball Adderley. Mendes and Adderley cut an album together for Capitol Records that was released later that year.

His early music, represented on albums like Bossa Nova York and Girl From Ipanema, was heavily influenced by Antonio Carlos Jobim, on whose recording Mendes worked. Mendes liked what he had found on his visit to New York and in 1964, he moved to the United States, initially to play on albums with Jobim and Art Farmer, and formed Brasil '65 the following year. The group recorded for Capitol without attracting too much notice at first. In 1966, however, Mendes and his band renamed Brasil '66 and this time caught on...
The group's self-titled debut LP became a hit, propelled by the single "Mas Que Nada." Their second album, Equinox, yielded a trio of minor hits, "Night and Day," "Constant Rain (Chove Chuva)," and "For Me," but their third, Look Around, rose to number five behind a number three single of the group's cover of the Beatles' "Fool on the Hill," and an accompanying hit with "Scarborough Fair," based on Simon & Garfunkel's version of the folk song.

The group moved to the much smaller Bell Records label in 1973, and then Mendes jumped to Elektra for his first official solo album, Sergio Mendes. He re-launched his recording career two years later with Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 to little avail, and then, after a five year layoff from the public eye, Mendes returned to A&M in 1982. His 1983 comeback album, Sergio Mendes, was his first Top 40 album in nearly a decade and a half, and was accompanied by his biggest chart single ever, "Never Gonna Let You Go," which hit number four. after the pop success, he returned to the music of Brazil. and although he nolonger has pop success in the U.S., He remains a popular figure internationally. During the '90s, Mendes performed with a new group, Brasil '99, and more recently, Brasil 2000. He is always introducing the newest Brazilian artists to a larger audience, and lately has even been integrating the sounds of Bahian hip-hop into his music.

Arto Lindsay

After his tenure as guitarist in the no wave band DNA and the punk-jazz Lounge Lizards, Arto Lindsay formed the Avant- Funk group Ambitious Lovers. Lindsay, a native of Brazil, began mixing the Brazilian pop music of his youth with the sonic density and avant-garde he pursued as a member of the Lower East Side noise rock scene. his recordings as leader of the Ambitious Lovers , were a great blend of dance-pop and sonic adventurousness. With help from keyboardist and Ambitious Lover co-conspirators Peter Scherer. Following Ambitious Lovers, Lindsay became more involved with Brazilian music, working on albums by such Brazilian luminaries as Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, Joao Gilberto, Gal Costa and Tom Zé. In the mid 90's, he began issuing albums under his own name. Lindsay became the first artist to release an album on Ani Difranco's Righteous Babe label (besides Ani herself, that is), beginning with The Prize. Invoke was released in 2002, followed by Salt in 2004, all dispaying his special blend of Brazilian music and Funked-up dissonance.

My favourite is Elis Regina.
She was a big superstar in Brasil in the 60's & 70's.
1 of her most famous album was actually recorded in Sweden
in 1969 with Toots Thielemans during her european tour.
The album is called Aquarelo do Brasil & it's just so great!
But her no 1 album tho' should B the album she did with the master
composer Antonio Carlos Jobim.
I'm talking about the 1974 album Elis & Tom.
The version of the classic "Corcovado" on this 1 must B the
most beautiful version of that song.

Another favourie of mine is the beautiful & talented Marisa Monte.
She reminds me alot of Sade. Her debut album came out in 1992
& they R all great,altho' if I have 2 pick out 1 I'd have 2 say
the 1 she did with Carlinhos Brown & Arnaldo Antunes under the groupname
Tribalistas from 2002.
I can highly recomend this beautiful album.

I know, right?

I still bug out at how she aged so fast,,so young lol rather shallow but I can't help but to think of it, sorry lol

But maaaaan, that bitch can play those ivorys like no other shocked her phrasings, her chord-structures & her melodic ideas,,,are just "ooh" outta the universe.

I don't know if you guys can see this but I sense a Duke Ellington influence by the way she plays the piano(and sometimes improvise).

I know in her bio, she mentions players like Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Antonio Carlos Jobim, being influences, as well as other artists like Sarah Vaughan and Milton Nascimento...But I wonder if Ellington's in there, too... (BTW, It's interesting how much influence the Duke's had as a pianist...I think a lot of people think of him as the bandleader and composer, and sometimes his playing gets overlooked...)

You ever listen to Tribalistas? Its Marisa Monte, Carlhinos Brown (my third favorite brazilian male artist) and Arnaldo Antunes. This was a really popular album here last year.

If you wanna hear some really good contemporary Brazilian music check out Lenine. He's awesome. But he's not that popular yet in the rest of the world. He's really socially progressive as well as being musically progressive, yet with a great appreciation for past artists. If you can find Falange Canibal or Na Pressao you won't be disappointed. He also has an album with Marcos Suzano that sounds different than those two but is really raw and beautiful. Highly recommended.

He has a cool song with Ani DiFranco on Falange.
Change it one more time..

I'm sorry but I wish I knew more about Brazilian music. I will check out some of the artists you mentioned.

So far, the ONLY Brazilian album I have, is without a doubt, in the top 10 of my entire collection, and I HIGHLY recommend it it you want to listen to something reqlly organic and earthy - mainly just two guys, their voice and their accoustic guitars:

bow

Edit: I also have Gilberto Jil's MTV 'Acustico' set on DVD...

Truly amazing...

hmmm I have fond memories of listening to Sergio Mendes. His album titled The New Brasil 77 was the bomb. That album had some good rhythms and funk.
