87 people feel differently, but here's my take on last night.

1. Did Ashlee lip synch?

I say no. She did use low volume backing tracks to make her voice sound stronger (which is deceptive but not as much as lipsynching). To me, lip synching is when the artist doesn't sing at all. She sang over backing tracks. It's done all the time. That track certainly wasn't loud enough to be lipsynched to. She obviously was going to add her own vocals had that been the right song.

2. Was the glitch the band's fault or a techno-glitch?

When I watched the original broadcast, I thought the show's sound techs had goofed by queuing the wrong vocal track.

Ashley had already sung Pieces of Me and certainly couldn't sing it again. So, she didn't. She danced, he band played so as to not look stupid while the backing track was going. Yeah, they smirked when she watched off after dancing ... as anyone would after such an embarrassment. They probably thought show staff would stop the tape and queue the right tape.

I don't think the glitch was that she didn't start lipsynching in time... but that the backing tape for Shadow didn't play as expected.

She should not have blamed the band. Clearly, the tape started before they did, so that was a weird excuse. Why was she trying to cover up the use of a backing tape. Even SNL later edited out the backing tape.

But they are so common. Do other SNL artists not use backing tracks?? Why would SNL cut a deal with Ashlee to do something atypical and deceptive (maybe someone who's into sound engineering could enlighten us)

3. Is Ashlee's career now over?

Had she been experienced enough, she could have regrouped and just had her band do Shadow without a backing track.

Oh, course she might have sounded really horrible. But she should have taken the chance.

Britney, Lopez, ... most current singers with weaker voices using backing tracks (even Beyonce sometimes does). And they still have careers.

But walking off.... that might have killed it. That made it look like something bigger was exposed. Now, everyone (not just on this board either ... but on several others) will call her a lip-syncher.

She missed an opportunity to overcome the techno-error and save her career. Don't know if she'll survive this ... unless she plans a real, honest to goodness live performance that kicks ass.

She lip-synched the first song - quite easy to tell, since she fucks up on a few lines. Vids of that are circulating, too.

The only way for her to salvage her career IMO would be to perform her songs acoustically.

Just her and her guitar player. It would dispel rumours and prove she's an act with talent.

Although I don't think that will happen. Don't want it to really. neutral

The pop star, younger sister of singer and TV star Jessica Simpson, sounded great belting out "Pieces of Me" in her first segment on the show. It was the same song that she butchered at August's MTV Music Video Awards, drawing withering reviews for a flat, out of key performance.

I remember that. Guess we know why she lip synched.

No. For decades SNl was the one show you could count on for live performances (remember Sheila's back in 1985? She rocked).

The first time I saw lip synching on SNL was Jennifer Lopez...then Kylie, then Janet.

I cant' believe they gave into this crap.

I just can't believe this isn't beigger news! Ashlee's career shoudl be over...espeically after she blamed the band. If she at least came out and apologized and gave a "reason" for her lip synching (eg. she was sick or something dumb like that) at least she would have just been a wimp. Now she deserves no pity at all.

Lip synching should never be allowed..... It always bothered me that Madonna, Michael Jackson and other top stars got away with it foryears. Who did they think they were kidding?

Damn I shoulda recorded it! I would've loved to see this. But I doubt it'll ruin her career. I was talking to a couple college age girls who pretty much said they could care less about lipsyncing with a everybody-does-it laissez faire.

As for Kylie I saw that SNL and I don't believe she lipsanc. Britney didn't sing one note of "Me Against The Music" and Janet lipsanc her a$$ of during "Strawberry Bounce". The dubious distinction goes to J Lo, who to my knowledge was the first to lipsinc on the show.

I am a regular reader of a few SNL message boards/groups and a poster on one of them, who claims to work for the show and who has provided accurate and reliable information in the past regarding the program, says that Ashlee "blew her voice out" (his words) during Saturday's earlier dress rehearsal and so it was decided that she'd lipsynch the live show (however, this person says that when she performed her songs live at earlier rehearsals, her voice "sounded great" [er, if you say so...]) and that it was never the intended plan that she lipsynch.

This person also claims it was the drummer who accidentally cued up the wrong track and so this whole gaff is his 'fault'.

Whatever.

IMO, she's still just another phony, manufactured "artist" that's all image and no real talent.

I have watched the footage several times and I am starting to think that her band may have intentionally sabotaged her performance in order to expose her as a poser.

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!! evillol

As far as the band members laughing, I'd laugh too if a totally unbelievable fuckup happened on live tv & I was in the middle of it smile That's understandable, doesn't mean they plotted against her though. I think it's just responding to the situation honestly instead of tensing up. Plus they were probably high biggrin lol

Her record company, Geffen Records, said there was a computer glitch. Instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of Pieces of Me started mistakenly performing, the record company said in a statement.

Worst. Excuse. Ever.

Even worse than "my band started playing the wrong song!"

And how can a recording "mistakenly start performing"?

Here's the whole story that includes the record company statement.

Did 'SNL' Gaffe Expose Simpson Vocal Aid?

1 hour, 32 minutes ago Entertainment - AP

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK - Singer Ashlee Simpson (news)'s "extra help" may have been exposed when a "Saturday Night Live" audience heard her voice — singing the wrong song — while she held a microphone at her waist.

Her record company blamed a computer glitch and she blamed her band for Sunday morning's incident, which cut off her planned performance of the song "Autobiography" on the network comedy show.

Simpson had performed her hit single "Pieces of Me" without incident earlier in the show. When she came back a second time, her band started playing and the first lines of her singing "Pieces of Me" could be heard again.

She looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and the vocal was quickly silenced.

Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage 35 seconds into the performance. NBC quickly cut to a commercial.

"What can I say?" guest host Jude Law said with Simpson standing next to him at the end of the show. "Live TV."

"Exactly," Simpson said. "I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down."

Her record company, Geffen Records, said there was a computer glitch. Instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of "Pieces of Me" started mistakenly performing, the record company said in a statement.

But it sounded suspiciously like a guide vocal that's a common — although almost always unspoken — concert aid. Either the singer "lip synchs" by mouthing words to a backing tape or has a live microphone and sings along to the tape, making the voice sound more powerful than it is.

Such vocal tricks have been used before on the show, making "Saturday Night Live" not entirely live, said a show insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A Geffen spokeswoman did not immediately return a call for comment.

Simpson's walk-off joins the lore of other unexpected music moments on "SNL": Elvis Costello (news) stopping and changing songs on live TV, and Sinead O'Connor (news) tearing up a picture of the pope.

Got this from another board:

Here's what I got from her website re: lip-synch malfunction:

Here's the scoop on what happened!
10/24/2004 2:47:16 PM - by barbscoop

here's the word from a friend of mine who was at the show, and got it straight from the director, beth mccarthy, who she was a guest of:

ashlee can't sing. she tried all day friday, but was whining to her voice coach. they decided to leave her mike on so she could sing along to the track, but after the first line or two of the first song, turned her off cause she was awful.

so, as of the first song, all the mikes were off.

now, they had the wrong song queued up for the second song, obviously. it really was the drummer's fault. apparently he was supposed to signal something or start in with some beat, and the one he did was for the first song. because he fucked up, the guy doing the tape hurried up and put the first song on, because that was what the drummer had signalled. when this got all fucked up, they did two things:

1. turned on all the mikes so the band could take over and start the real song. which they didn't. have no idea why.
2. turned off the tape so the band could play the real song.

they were going to turn on ashlee's mike so she could sing the real song, but decided not to because the band was just playing the first song. the guys were smiling cause they were simply thinking "what a fucking clusterfuck".

beth mccarthy was also the director of the superbowl halftime show last year, so she's no stranger to ... malfunctions.

Wait a minute... I was under the impression that you had to sing live to be on SNL. Wasn't that a requirement? As in, Saturday Night Live???

When did this change? Wasn't this their 'trademark' or something?
