Thing is, she just proved how unprofessional she was. She could have easily giggled as if she were poking fun at the lip-synching image intentionally, then started all over again "in 5,4,3,2,1, boys". You know, instead of doing a retard dance and running off stage.

That would have required some thinking, something she doesn't have to do as a manufactured pop star.

just watching snl...strictly for the jude law factor...and ashlee simpson comes on to perform. well, clearly her record was not cued up properly or it skipped or something and she was busted for lip syncing...the band wasn't even playing its instruments. they all looked at each other in embarrassment and ashlee actually walked off stage! eek not a good way to handle it, lol. anyway, snl cut to commercial and that was the end of it. how terribly embarrassing...

I missed it, having nodded off during the Tony Blair/George Bush skit. I woke up at the end of SNL and saw Ashlee cutting off Jude Law's goodbye and apologizing for something. Now I know what that was all about!!!

I saw her first song and there seemed to be a heavy backing track or something that they might have cut out quickly. This must have been the second song. Sorry I missed it. I was watching "Jersey Girl", which wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. Kind of nice.

I hope this ruins her no good career. People who can't sing, should not even try. All the money she made for her appearance on the show, record sales... millions of dollars, and for what?

There are many other people out there who actually CAN sing. I wish SNL would take this as a clue and quit letting their music acts lip synch!

That show is losing more and more respect. I miss the days when they were cutting edge and singers actually sang LIVE!

The funny thing is, the show (her MTV reality show) pretty much showcased the fact that she couldn't really sing....yet people bought the record. I don't doubt it's her voice and don't think it's the same thing as Milli Vanilli but those vocals have more sugar than Coca-Cola!

Plus...I'm sure her fans already know that she lip-syncs. So it might not affect them any.....but non-fans are gettin' a hell of a laugh out of it.

I never listened to Ashlee Simpson before, but while watching her first song, I was convinced it was lip synched..... at first I thought she may have been singing over a track, but for the rest of the song it seemed like she was totally faking.

Then when the 2nd song started, I was like, hey that's the same song as before (I dont' even know her shit and I could tell).

I felt vindicated smile

But my question is..... was the band playing at all? Like is her backign track just a vocal that is in synch with the real band..? Or is the entire performance faked, including the band? It seemed like maybe the band started playing live after they realized the tape was of "Pieces of me" but if the band usually mimes, why would their sound be turned on??

Also, SNL had always required people to sing live. I think even Britney sat down on a stool and did "Not yet a woman" acoutstically.

To my knowledge, the first lip synch I ever saw on SNL was J.LO, and her segmetns looked like they were done earlier, like not even in frotn of the live audience. Since then I think Kylie Minoque and Janet lip synched.

When did they change their policy???

Anyone notice that the retard dance looks a helluva lot like the dance Milli Vanilli used to do so often (the one in the Girl You Know It's True video)? Coincidence or conspiracy?

I have watched the footage several times and I am starting to think that her band may have intentionally sabotaged her performance in order to expose her as a poser. If you notice, the drummer started off playing Pieces of Me along with the recording. That's too much of a coincidence that he is performing the wrong song and the wrong recording is also being played. She hesitates, turns around and looks at the drummer like..wth. The guitar players are not playing at that time. A few seconds into the song, after she starts doing the Riverdance, the guitarist in the middle turns up the volume on his guitar and the other two chime in. At one point, the guitarist in the middle turns towards the drummer. He turns around and they cut over to him and the guitarist on our right. Look at his expression as he looks at the other guitarist. He has a smirk on his face and looks as if he is about to burst out laughing.

87 people feel differently, but here's my take on last night.

1. Did Ashlee lip synch?

I say no. She did use low volume backing tracks to make her voice sound stronger (which is deceptive but not as much as lipsynching). To me, lip synching is when the artist doesn't sing at all. She sang over backing tracks. It's done all the time. That track certainly wasn't loud enough to be lipsynched to. She obviously was going to add her own vocals had that been the right song.

2. Was the glitch the band's fault or a techno-glitch?

When I watched the original broadcast, I thought the show's sound techs had goofed by queuing the wrong vocal track.

Ashley had already sung Pieces of Me and certainly couldn't sing it again. So, she didn't. She danced, he band played so as to not look stupid while the backing track was going. Yeah, they smirked when she watched off after dancing ... as anyone would after such an embarrassment. They probably thought show staff would stop the tape and queue the right tape.

I don't think the glitch was that she didn't start lipsynching in time... but that the backing tape for Shadow didn't play as expected.

She should not have blamed the band. Clearly, the tape started before they did, so that was a weird excuse. Why was she trying to cover up the use of a backing tape. Even SNL later edited out the backing tape.

But they are so common. Do other SNL artists not use backing tracks?? Why would SNL cut a deal with Ashlee to do something atypical and deceptive (maybe someone who's into sound engineering could enlighten us)

3. Is Ashlee's career now over?

Had she been experienced enough, she could have regrouped and just had her band do Shadow without a backing track.

Oh, course she might have sounded really horrible. But she should have taken the chance.

Britney, Lopez, ... most current singers with weaker voices using backing tracks (even Beyonce sometimes does). And they still have careers.

But walking off.... that might have killed it. That made it look like something bigger was exposed. Now, everyone (not just on this board either ... but on several others) will call her a lip-syncher.

She missed an opportunity to overcome the techno-error and save her career. Don't know if she'll survive this ... unless she plans a real, honest to goodness live performance that kicks ass.

They edited out the backing vocal intro, so it makes her explanation at the end appear somewhat plausible.
