Welcome to the org, raveon3tnek. Now prepare for the onslaught that will surely follow. Some orgers will be quick to point out that Prince fans think the world revolves around Prince and that Prince has his own influences as well, so leave these guys alone. And some might say it a little less diplomatically than that. But I digress.
I don't really believe that any of those guys WANT to be Prince per se. They aspire to hold the same type of reputation Prince has developed over the course of his career. MJ simply needs to rehabilitate his. Kravitz and TTD have been around a while, so their reps are pretty much set. The rest are kinda doing their own things. the only person on that list that tries to be like prince is ttd. the rest have all developed their own thing with influences by many people...some of whom influenced p himself. i would think maxwell and d'angelo are bigger marvin gaye fans than prince fans. michael jackson bares no resemblance to prince in his musical (or dance) style. ttd, right down to the name change, is the poor man's prince. i like ttd, too, don;t get me wrong; i've got every one of his cds. only those in denial would say ttd is original in his image...shit, even the way he talks is reminiscent of prince...with his spiritual maze speech and all... | |

Wow. A new name has been added? Raphael? Oh right, he wore a ruffled shirt once in a video. Lord knows THAT never happened before Prince, right? couch, cough, LittleRichardLiberacePaulRevereandTheRaidersJimiHendrixAdamAntDavidBowieTheBeattles,etc. cough. Sananda (TTD) sounds NOTHING like Prince. People who are really into his music already know that lyrically they are so different it ain't even funny. Contentwise, musically there's no resemblence either. What they have in common is both of them are light-skinned black males with a "pretty boy" image who do a mixture of rock and funk. Actually, Sananda does a mixture of rock & soul. Now I see why TTD left the states. People probably wouldn't let him be himself here. How can you even show who you are when everybody is so busy trying to link you to someone else. R&B surface listeners seem to make these comparisons a lot. Of course these artists are influenced by Prince, as is probably every artist that came along during the time of Prince's popularity. Somehow, it seems that in the mind of Prince fans that when it comes to Prince influence=cloned. All of these artists have their own identites, personalities, etc. If you don't see that, then you probably don't know their work well enough. This is a tired subject. Michael Jackson? LMAO!!!! That's just plain stupid. Warner Brothers really did a number on some of your heads with their marketing campaign. I think some of you who have posted on this topic before are simply trying to make up for Prince's lack of relevance on today's music scene by trying to link him to artists who are currently influencing what's going on. Good call! (I can't help thinking he fantasized about being a rock god like Prince.) Didn't he wear a purple leather outfit during one of his stand-up acts? Also, during the premiere of "Purple Rain" he wore this leather thing around his neck, reminiscent of that leather "collar" w/snaps thing Prince wore during his "PR" days. | |

Michael Jackson has tried his damndest to look like Prince for years. The skin, the hair, everything. On his "You Are Not Alone" video, he looked just like Prince from the back....with the hair and the black lace shirt.
He's had a Prince complex for years. He even named, not one, but two of his sons Prince.  I'm going to hide now from the MJ fanatics.  Andy is a four letter word. | |

MJ has one of the most if not the most uniquely identifiable personas in music history. As big as his ego is, rest assured he doesn't think in "Prince terms". I think its the fans that make the Prince/MJ association. Since the media gave him the title of the King of pop, obviously his son would be the _____ (fill in the blank). MJhas never appeared to be threatened by anyone else, Prince included. | |

It was Michael Jackson who gave himself the title 'King Of Pop'. Just a point. I never heard Micheal say that. I've only heard the press say it. Prove that if you can. I'm not trying to be a smart ass; I sincerely have only heard the press call him that; and then later try to imply that HE called himself that instead of them. In any circumstance, calling MJ a "Prince wannabe" is still laughable. Uh, you have heard of Michael Jackson, right? So has EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD. Prince is not as recognizable. Even though I agree with you 100 and 15% on everything else, MJ was trippin' over P during 81-84. Some of the Jacksons, Jermaine, Janet, Randy, all dug P's music and were impressed. Mike was too, but because Mike knew he couldn't compete against P's musicianship and his wild sexual image, Mike felt threatned and somewhat jealous. In a book about MJ, someone who had worked for Mike for years talked about how jealous Mike was of P's success during Purple Rain. How P had this big movie and women flipping out over him when P was just as feminine as Mike was.This bothered Mike. MJ would not watch the American Music Awards in 85 cuz he knew P would clean up on the awards. No one was could mention P's name in Mike's pressence during that time. In 81-85, that was P's years as far as moving up in the industry as a star. P was getting a lot of attention. During this time, Mike simply didn't like it and didn't know how to compete with it. You remember the ghetto Beat It jackets that didn't have as many zippers and the Thriller jackets that were as thin as windbreakers? People who came to school in those joints got clowned! LOL! Still, I think any jealousy would have been more towards the attention he wasn't getting. He probably did have a little jealousy of Prince's musical skills, but MJ image has always been solid in the originality category. | |

Dave Sirulnick- "We could not get over the fact that they had the audacity to actually do this, that he was sort of crowning himself, and we just thought this was the craziest thing in the world. And they were serious about it. Michael was serious about a lot of these kinds of things at that time. He liked awards, and he liked being honored, and he really thought he was the King of Pop and wanted to be referred to that way. I never said he didn't adopt and embrace the title. Obviously he did, since he named his son Prince. I can clearly remember a time when "self-proclaimed" was not part of that "King Of Pop" title, so it sounds to me like somebody over at Mtv is rewriting HIStory.
