'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack appreciation thread

I remember in the winter of 1977,my mother took me to go see the movie "Saturday Night Fever".I was only 8 years old and in retrospect,it was probably not an appropriate film for a young kid to see...lol...LOTS of cuss words, sex scenes, some nudity, etc."Star Wars" it wasn't...lol...but I think the movie is spectacular. It uses the disco scene as it's backdrop, but it's so much more than just a "disco film".It's a powerful urban tragedy, with a meaty storyline and incredible acting.John Travolta has never done a better film than this, with the possible exception of "Grease",but even that films' soundtrack,as charming as it is,can't compete with 'SNF'.It's simply one of the strongest soundtrack albums ever. The Bee Gees were at the top of their game, delivering some of the most impressive tunes of their entire career.Side One of this album is musical bliss...the funky R&B of "Staying Alive" followed by the sublime love ballad "How Deep Is Your Love"....then comes the infectious, mesmerizing "Night Fever" followed by the lush, sparkling,Philly Soul-styled slow jam "More Than A Woman".Side One concludes with a top-notch number from Yvonne Elliman, "If I Can't Have You",a song that (surprise, surprise) was also written by The Bees (they recorded their own version a year or so earlier). Those 5 songs alone make this album a true late-70s masterpiece.

But wait, there's more. This party is just getting started. The rest of the album consists of some of the finest disco, funk and R&B jams of the era.Kool and The Gang's intoxicating "Open Sesame" is one their finest moments. The Trammps really shine on the relentless "Disco Inferno",and Tavares deliver a faster version of the aformentioned Bee Gees song "More Than A Woman" ,a song that the Gibb brothers wrote especially for them. There are also some powerful instrumental tracks, such as "K-Jee" by MFSB,a few more Bee Gees jams from their previous albums, and even a catchy KC and The Sunshine number "Boogie Shoes".It was difficult for anyone to dislike disco after hearing this album, which sold an astonishing 22 million copies (probably more) which was unheard of back then.Throughout the late part of 1977 and pretty much all of 1978,this was the album to have.

To the "old schoolers" out there...what are your thoughts? What are your favorite songs and memories associated with this landmark soundtrack?

This may sound crazy, but I hate the part when Tony broke Annettte's heart and told her that he didn't want to enter the dance contest with her.I like her! That pretty much screwed her up throughout the rest of the film...lol...did you see all those pills she was popping while watching Tony and Stepanie in the dance contest? LOL

Best soundtrack album ever. With the coolest ever song as its opening track.

I heard sales were somewhere between 35 and 40m. It had already sold 25m by 1983 so I don't know where you got your stats from Mr. D. Eye. wink

Yeah,I knew it had sold more than 22 million, just wasn't sure exactly how much more lol

This is the album that inspired Michael Jackson to break it's sales records. He loved this album and was determined to outsell it.

Yeah, Michael has said that it inspired Thriller. But I was never quite sure what he meant by it. I always thought Off The Wall sounded more like Saturday Night Fever. MJ loves him some Bee Gees, tho'. smile

Some trivia about this soundtrack...

***The song "Staying Alive" was originally titled "Saturday Night".But since there were already many songs at the time with that title (by artists like Earth Wind and Fire and The Bay City Rollers),the brothers changed it to "Staying Alive".

***Likewise, the movie was originally titled "Saturday Night",but when the brothers submitted a song called "Night Fever",the producer decided to add "Fever" to the film's title.

***One song that was considered for this film was Boz Scagg's 1976 classic "Lowdown",but since that song was already featured in another movie which came out earlier that year("Looking For Mr.Goodbar"),they cancelled plans to use it.

I still spin Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You" to this day -- classic disco song.

That's the name of the infamous magazine article (I think it appeared in new York magazine in 1976?) which inspired the movie. The producers bought the rights to turn it into a movie. But they felt that "Saturday Night" was a better title, and then they added "fever".

Shockingly, the Bee Gees' own version of this song is disappointing imo.Yvonne's version is superior.

I don't know, but they were actually planning to make Grease 3 with ONJ and John Travolta - and Kylie Minogue as their teen daughter (!). Paramount put the brakes on it last year due to their financial woes.

Yeah,I heard about the plans to make "Grease 3" and Olivia seemed excited at the prospect, but I don't know how that would have turned out...lol...a 'Saturday Night Fever' sequel makes alot more sense to me.

Errrrr.....

http://www.agonybooth.com...by_moment/

CAST OF CHARACTERS:

Trisha Rawlings (Lily Tomlin). Rich, middle-aged Beverly Hills socialite with an icy demeanor who inexplicably falls for a homeless, drug-pushing street kid named Strip.

Strip (John Travolta). A homeless, drug-pushing street kid who inexplicably falls for a rich, middle-aged Beverly Hills socialite with an icy demeanor named Trisha Rawlings.

Naomi (Andra Akers). Trish's haughty, rich best friend. Really, there's not much more to be said about her.

Dan Santini (James Luisi). I was never really sure who this guy was, or what he was doing in this movie, but he's Dan Santini, for God's sake!.

To Paramount's surprise, Saturday Night Fever grossed tons of money and even spawned the biggest-selling movie soundtrack of all time. And when Grease was finally released, it too achieved blockbuster success and a chart-topping soundtrack. In less than two years' time, Travolta went from ensemble player on a sitcom to a superstar with two huge movies, a hit single ("You're the One that I Want"), and even an Oscar nomination for his performance as Tony Manero in Fever.

After this much success, selecting a follow-up project would be a daunting task for any actor. It's likely that any project Travolta signed onto would have been looked at as something of a failure by comparison. Unfortunately, he signed onto a movie that looks like a failure compared to nearly anything you've ever seen in your life. He decided to star in Moment by Moment.

The tarnish would never really come off of Travolta's career after this movie. Though he made some respectable films in the 80's, his superstar status quickly deteriorated. Before long, he would end up playing second fiddle to a baby and a Bruce Willis voiceover in the brain-dead Look Who's Talking series. While these films may have allowed him to continue to pay the bills, Travolta was all but written off in the minds of critics and audiences alike.

Amazingly, however, Travolta pulled off one of the most inspiring comebacks in Hollywood history. He took a salary cut and appeared in Quentin Tarantino's low budget independent film Pulp Fiction in 1994, and the gamble paid off in spades. Travolta's career was revitalized, Hollywood welcomed him back with open arms, and he ended up securing his second Oscar nomination.

A publicity still from the hot tub scene in Moment by Moment. All those who see the Hot Tub Scene will have a multitude of disturbing images etched into their brains until they die.

thanks for the article! oddly enough,I still wanna see that film, just to see if it's really as awful as critics say lol

Trivia---in the late 70s,Travolta was offered a movie role which he turned down. The reason? His mother took a look at the script and pleaded with him to reject this project. The film was American Gigolo and Richard Gere was brought in to play the lead role that Travolta declined.
