Rick James' unreleased 1989 album 'Kickin' has begun circulating among fans

In 1989,when he was on Warner Bros,Rick James recorded an album titled 'Kickin'.But the album was never released and he was let go from his contract. But it now seems that the album has begun circulating among fans.At his official sites' message boards ( www.RickJames.com )fans are talking about it and writing their reviews.Apparently, this is the tracklist...

Rick James 'Kickin' (1989)

"Kickin"
"Day and Night"
"Teach Me"
"Black and White"
"Runaway Love"
"School You"
"Anything and Everything"
"U Got It Good (Real Good)"
"Get Wit It"
"Rock and Roll Eyes"

Has anyone heard it yet?

My ex brother inlaw has a Rick James 45 with a 1989 copyright from Warner Brothers records. I never knew it existed until I saw it in his collection. I've never heard it though.

This must be the single that was going to lead the way for that album that ended up being pulled.

You know what. I vaguely remeber a couple singles from the album. Some good singles on the album were Runaway Love and Teach me.

Where did you hear those singles at?! Did you manage to hear an advance promo copy back in '89?

In the U.K.,promo cassette copies were distributed. If your ex-brother in law has one of these,it is a rare and valuable collector's item.Do you remember the name of the single?

Why sure.

No seriously, I just never thought Rick James has actual fans.... he seems to me to be the kind of "yeah I have one of his CDs" - type of a person. Kind of like, you know... Feindflug.

His is not a cassette, it's a vinyl 45. I doubt it is a promo or an import because I looked at it closely to see the year it was made and I would have noticed that. It was just a normal looking 45 with the white Warner Brothers label.

I honestly cannot remember the name of the song because it was years ago when I saw it. I was very shocked when I saw it because being the Rick James fan I am, I have never heard it. I never knew it existed because it never got any radio airplay. I have no idea why he had it because I don't think he is even into Rick James. He used to be a blues DJ that spinned records at parties around town and every once in a while he would throw in some mainstream R&B for the younger people. Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" was hot that year, maybe he stumbled across in the record store and bought it thinking younger people were back into Rick James? Who knows?

I'm going to have to remember to go by his house one day and see if he still has it. I forgot all about that record until you mentioned it. Now that I have a CD burner, I want a copy. lol

Rick may have tons of fans all over the world Davideye, but I would never in a million years put him on the same level as Prince. He had some good moments back in the 80's but that's about it. He was convicted of abduction and sexual assault and served time for it too. I used to work with a woman who's daughter dated him in the 80's and she told me he's a complete pig and wouldn't advise any woman to go near him. He was abusive emotionally, physically and sexually. As I said, I know he has tons of fans worldwide, but to me and many others, he's a has-been and a creep!!

I'm just wondering how he got his hands on it. He wasn't at home when I saw it. I was visiting my sister and we were looking through his records. He had told me previously to look through and see if there was anything that I wanted to borrow and copy. When I ran accross it, I didn't think anything at the time, I just thought it was a Rick James record that somehow got past me. I didn't borrow it and copy it because I said "where there's a 45, there's an album". I looked all over for the album and when I couldn't find it, I just figured it was out of print. I had forgotten all about it over the years until I read your post.

Isn't it amazing how someone who is not even a big fan will have something rare in their possession and not even know it?

Whether all those things are true or not, that still has nothing to do with his status as a musical artist. In the early 1980s, Rick James was the ONLY one that could give Prince a run for his money.

Yep. But uh, I just want to hear "Rock and Roll Eyes". I bet that cut is killing! Very cool title. Man, I'm tempted as hell to use that title for one of my songs. Could dedicate it to Rick? But I won't. Can't bite off of somebody like that. Not my style. Dig that title though.

Oh,I never said that Rick was a saint...lol...I'm aware that he had his "issues",but when I called him a legend,I was really referring to his music and what he brought to the funk/R&B world. It's very important to separate the person from the music. Many great artists have self-destructed in some form or another (Marvin Gaye,Elvis Presley,Sly Stone) and many more have gotten into trouble with the law (Michael Jackson,James Brown,George Clinton, etc).Tupac served time for sodomizing/raping a woman (charges that are similiar to Rick's) and yet he is still universally hailed as one of the greatest rappers/poets ever.Marvin Gaye is one of your favorites, and it's well-known that he was an abusive wife-beater and heavy drug user.Does that make him less of a musical legend?

I never understood why it wasn't released. His previous album on Warners,1988's 'Wonderful' did reasonably well and it featured a Number One R&B hit "Loosey's Rap" (featuring Roxanne Shante).I wonder if it was Warners or Rick himself who decided against releasing it?

VERY well said David Eye! I'm not singling out kisscamille out by no means, but people, in general, are very quick to put "bad ole' Rick James" down and at the same time, put others that are just as bad on a pedastal.

As for someone like Tupac, who I consider just one of countless others that can "talk" in a rhyme over someone else's sampled record and does not have an eighth of the talent that Rick James had in his stool...he became a legend after his death. Why, is beyond me. I just hope now that Rick James is gone, he will finally get some of the recognition and respect that he deserved while he was alive as the great musical talent that he was.

nod

I've never understood why so many rappers are given a "free pass" for their behavior, while a real musician like Rick James gets criticized and ridiculed because of his legal troubles.

Warner Bros. owns the master recording. They should just remaster Rick's 1988 album 'Wonderful' and add a second bonus disc containing the 'Kickin' tracks.
