Rhythm Nation v.s. The Velvet Rope

I loved both albums and listened to them from top to bottom. But, I think that The Velvet Rope will always top Rhythm Nation and any of her albums. The Velvet Rope really got me into Janet more than any of her other albums. Rhythm Nation is more of a concept album to me just like What's Going On and it's one of her best albums of the 80's, but I like TVR better. TVR is an aural listening experience for me. So, which one is better for you. lol

velvet rope.

i love rhythm nation, as i do pretty much every janet record (well, not dream street, lol), but its too much of the same sound throughout the record. there's not much variety in the record which is what always keeps it from being one of my favorites. i almost have to be in the mood to hear it. velvet rope has SO many different sounds. not to mention subject matter...velvet rope is just far more personal. i still listen to velvet rope all the time.

TVR just has so much more going for it while RN is a lot of good pop singles and not much on substance. RN sounds like a forced political album that would have sounded better if it was a pop album with a few political songs while TVR is just a natural process that incorprates a lot of sounds, themes, messages and some good vocals.

Y'all know I love, love, love TVR, but I have to go with RN1814 (not only because it triggered the first inklings of my appreciation for Janet) because the production on that record was just too solid. Jam & Lewis just came off of Control and the stakes were very high for the 1814 project. They were in the zone and they killed it with that album. RN1814 is the best album Jam & Lewis ever produced. Janet, the background singers, the musicians, the engineers, everybody was giving it their all -- and it really does come across on the disc. Janet was giving some of her best vocals with this album. You can tell when they were making the project they were going after MJ's Bad or Thriller and you can feel it on the album. It was a perfect pop record. The tracks are polished and meticulously assembled. They took time to give you something special with the whole project (even the videos, you can't deny the Rhythm Nation video -- and short film!, Escapade, Come Back To Me, LWND(WY), Alright, Miss You Much, Black Cat -- Classic vids!) You can spin it from beginning to end and it's like going to a matinee show. When you listen to that CD, just TAKE SOME POPCORN WITH YOU 'cause you're in for a ride, I'm telling you.

these used to be my top 2 janet albums. but the more time goes on, i think "janet." is much more deserving. on these 2, there are too many songs that i dislike, or too many problems with the flow.

The Velvet Rope is a classic in it's own right, but After about Everytime...Velvet kinda drops a bit.

The production is spectacular in RN, and plus the songs..THE SONGS!!! The atmosphere of the movie and the album was just raw industial funk.

And tell me that "Lonely" Come Back 2 Me" and "Someday Is 2Nite" is JAMMIN!!!

Rhythm Nation
It's one of my favorite albums EVER. It's what made me really interested in Janet and become even more of a fan. Plus there IMO, there isn't a bad song on that album. The Velvet Rope is awesome and I really like it but RN1814 does is for me.
