Fleetwood Mac's 1979 album 'Tusk'---what do you think? It took awhile, but I finally got into this album.I bought the remastered 2-CD edition several months ago,and it's taken me awhile to "digest" this massive album. And I'm really, really impressed! I have to admit,I was never that crazy about the first single---the title track---but there are so many wonderful songs here!! One track in particular,I just can't get outta my head... "That's All For Everyone" This song is yet another Lindsey Buckingham masterpiece!!! I've been listening to that track non-stop for the past few days.I seriously would have chosen this song as the FIRST single from the album. It just mesmerizes me the same way "I'm So Afraid" (from the 1975 self-titled album) does.Amazing! What are your thoughts on this album? How does it compare to the previous two Fleetwood Mac albums? What are your favorite songs?

For me it's the best album that Fleetwood Mac ever made. It's quite a lot to take in at first (as with any double album) but over time it reveals itself to be the absolute peak of their career. All three writers are on top form and show a willingness to step away from the commercial pop that was Rumours. It opens pleasantly enough with Christine McVie's Over & Over but by the second track it's clear that this is a different Fleetwood Mac from the one the public had grown to love. Lindsey Buckingham really went out on a limb to present the group in an original way and although at times it sounds like he's sacrificing the Fleetwood Mac sound in favour of his own quirky experiments, you could argue that it keeps the album interesting and unpredictable. It would be the last time you could say that about the band for nearly 25 years. And Stevie Nicks never wrote a better set of songs.
My faves: Over & Over Think About Me Save Me A Place Sara What Makes You Think You're The One Storms That's All For Everyone Sisters Of The Moon Angel Brown Eyes I Know I'm Not Wrong Beautiful Child Tusk Never Forget

My favorite album is the 1975 release 'Fleetwood Mac',which I like even more than 'Rumours'
btw, wouldn't you say that "That's All For Everyone" has a John Lennon vibe to it? Man,I can't stop listening to that song!

Cloudy, did you ever listen to Disc 2,which contains the outtakes and demos? This is almost too much music to absorb! LOL. But I'm thrilled with these remasters.
Any idea if they're planning to remaster any other albums? There's a 2-CD "Live" set from their 1980 tour,if I'm not mistaken.Has it been remastered yet?

Yeah, I've listened to it three or four times. I was a little disappointed that there weren't more outtakes. It seems they favoured alternate mixes. Even so, there's some good work in progress on it. I like the eight minute version of Sara best. Apparantly there are plans to remaster the entire back catalogue. Hopefully that includes the 1980 live album. It's a pretty good set. But don't hold me to that. I'm still waiting for the Bee Gees remasters.

Actually , Im pretty fond of this album...and was going to respond at some point yesterday...but forgot about it when the thread dissappeared from the first page... I think it's a good album , but a bit uneven...Im aware that both as a band and as individuals( particularly Lindsey), they were attempting to do something different .... and they succeed , however in some ways , it doesn't hang together very well as an album ... In other words , some of Lindsey's strange little home-made songs sound odd bumping up against Christine's trademark love-ditties and Stevie's extended mood-pieces... It does have some great songs on it ,tho... And it's fascinating how much critical opinion of it has changed over the past 25 years... "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

I must add that Lindsey's guitar work on this album deserves more credit. Especially his work on Stevie's songs.

I think Lindsey could ALWAYS deserve more credit...his production sense and playing are criminally ignored.... "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

It's a good album. Not on "Rumours" of course, but it's good. Love the video with the USC Marching Band. The song "Tusk" is funky as hell, I think. Lindsey let it rip on some of his songs on the album. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

So what's your fave songs from it? Sara (what a gorgeous, sublime melody.....mmmm Stevie; too bad they didn't let her do more vocals on the first three records, since this was probably the last record where her voice was truly pure) Honey Hi Beautiful Child Tusk Think About Me Especially those but.....oh, hell, all of them. It's such a good record. [Edited 10/22/04 10:57am]

The first impression was probably negative for a lot of people. It just doesn't jump out at you like Rumours does. Only a few songs (Think About Me comes to mind) are the pop that we expect from Fleetwood Mac. After a few listens, I think it's pretty good. I think MrTation is right when he says it's uneven. The three songwriters are going in different directions. And like people say about some multiple albums (the White Album, Sandinista, Emancipation) it could've made a great single album. But I have no problem with the extra stuff on any of those albums. I like to hear the weird stuff, too. Anyone hear about the band that did a song by song remake of Tusk? Check this song out at:

At least it was included on the remastered edition, tho'.
