I wanna start exploring the music of Hendrix but I dont know where to start..he has a million cds out biggrin ..BUT I dont wanna start with his BEST albums..I wanna see his developement as an artist..for instance like with Prince...on "For You" he was crawling..on the "Prince" CD he begin to stand on one knee..on "Dirty Mind" he stood all the way up!! Then on "Controversy" he started to walk..then on "1999" he started speed walking...then from Purple Rain- Lovesexy, Prince was olypic sprinting..LOLOL

I kinda want to first hear the albums where he was finidng his niche and then build to the albums that were just awesome! I love to listen to albums and hear the artists growth and maturity from album to album...my co worker said something about the "Electric Ladyland" album...Please Help!

start with are you experienced
then electric ladyland
then axis Bold as love ( my favorite Jimi album)
for the other stuff check out "the Jimi hendrix experience BBC sessions aka radio one"

there's a million boots out there as well

"high live n dirty" ( i dont recomend this one)
"woke up one morning and found myself dead" ( better version of High Live n dirty)
there was a 7'' called "Gloria" Jimi exclaims "her breath smelled like wet pussy"

there's "first rays of the new rising sun"
"South saturn delta"

i could go on and on but for now click this Http://www.experiencehendrix.com

I have to add ''Band of gypsies'', "The cry of love"" and "'Smash Hits"' (if not only for that fantastic version of Little wing)

DON'T buy ''Crash landing'' (instruments and vocals were added after his death)
or any ''early'' Hendrix (where he's just backing up another singer , tho' it's
got his name on it)

To me it's much better than ''First rays ..''

"Angel","Drifting","Belly button window" , "In from the storm" , "My friend" and "Straight ahead"are great songs to me , hell the whole album is great (apart from "Astro man" , maybe)

In terms of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, these are my basic essentials following a timeline.

Jimi Plays Monterey - June '67 (performance date)

Are You Experienced? - August '67

Axis: Bold As Love - January '68

Electric Ladyland - October '68

Live At Woodstock - August '69 (performance date)

Band Of Gypsys - December '69 (performance date)

Cry Of Love - '71 ?

Anyone want to fill in holes or add pre/post-Experience, have at it.

Personnally, I would go this route....

...however I will add that "The Jimi Hendrix Expirience" (2000) box set is an excellent primer for the uninitiated...and because it contains alternate versions of songs on the albums,it wont become redundant after buying them...

That narrows it down specifically. Start with Are You Experienced, then Axis: Bold As Love, then Electric Ladyland, then his last recording Live At The Fillmore. The rest are odds and ends, concerts and outtakes. Some are obviously better than others, but his he only finished 3 studio albums during his life. The first four I mentioned are the first to be released. I might be mistaken about Live At The Fillmore, but the Band of Gypsys are his new band, and newer musical ground is undertaken.

Only mistaken in that it wasnt his last...

But that's Ok cause it's always good to see you , Supernova!!

FYI- Both "Band Of Gypsys" and "Live At The Fillmore East" contain different peformances culled from those historic shows...in other words ,you'll need both....

You're right! I get the Fillmore performance mixed up with Band of Gypsys all the time.

I know this is slightly off topic, but this collection of outtakes:

contains the best version of " Power Of Soul" that I've ever heard, Much better than the one on"South Saturn Delta"...I don't understand why Kramer and co. did't use this version for official release,....

My take on this list:

Are You Experienced
Live @ Monterey
Axis: Bold As Love
Live @ Winterland
Electric Ladyland
Live @ Woodstock
First Rays of the new Rising Sun
Band Of Gypsys (if you're only going to get this, OR the fillmore show, get this one. i'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but fuck it, get band of gypsys)

anything on dagger records is highly recommended.

you can't easily get cry of love anymore anyway. dead issue.

yes, the box set is extraordinary.

the rainbow bridge album, as well as "hendrix in the west" both have some great stuff on them, i recommend those too.

one more: if you can find it, it's way out of print, but a box set called "stages" is excellent. it has one live show from each year 1967-1970. the studio albums only tell half the story; jimi thrived on stage.
Keep your headphones on.

That's very interesting...the only other studio version Ive heard is the botched one on "Crash Landing".I thought Kramer had revised it for "South Southern Delta" , and that his was the only other attempt at completing the song...

I think to date my fave is the live one on "Band Of Gypsys"...but Im gonna have to try and track that one you mentioned down...

Hey mates,

There's another decent version of Power Of Soul on The Baggy's Rehearsal Sessions.

And even more so, the version of Message To Love.
(Very close to the Band of Gypsys performance...well it was the rehearsal)

A bit of comical commentary goes on between the players too.
Hendrix as comedian.
