BRITNEY QUITS MUSIC?? Britney Spears is taking a break — again. She made the announcement late Friday in a "letter of truth" she posted on her fan site.
Her knee gave out on her during the "Outrageous" video shoot (forcing the cancellation of her summer tour) for a reason, she said — so that she would "have no choice but to stop" and give her body some rest (see "Britney's Fall: The Never-Before-Seen Footage"). She said she feels like she's missed out on too many of "the simple things" — like being able to watch such movies as Mandy Moore's "Saved" and re-runs of "Sex and the City" because of her nonstop work schedule, which kept her "going and going and going." "It's amazing what advisors will push you to do, even if it means taking a naive young blonde girl and putting her on the cover of every magazine," she wrote. Now, she'd like to "take some time off to enjoy life." "My prerogative right now is to just chill and let all of the other overexposed blondes on the cover of Us Weekly be your entertainment," she wrote. "Good luck girls!" Spears also said that her next project would be focusing on being a wife and hopefully a mother. "I can't wait to start my family!" she wrote. Spears last took a hiatus following her world tour that ended in July 2002. But though she had planned to take six months off, the break ended after three months, when she started to work on In the Zone. | |

Here's the letter in question:
Dear Fans, I am going to start writing this column now as often as possible. The reason is so I can talk directly to you, my fans, who have stuck by me & who continue to support me. Also, I'm not going to be as busy as my Mom. She's running behind my sister like crazy! I am also going to take some time off to enjoy life. I've actually learned to say 'NO!' With this newly found freedom, its like people don't know how to act around me. Should we talk to her like we did when she was 16 or like the Icon everyone says she is? My prerogative right now is to just chill & let all of the other overexposed blondes on the cover of Us Weekly be your entertainment... GOOD LUCK GIRLS!! I'm sorry that my life seemed like it was all over the place the past 2 years, it's probably because IT WAS! I understand now what they mean when they talk about child stars. Going & going & going is all I've ever know since I was 15 years old. It's amazing what advisors will push you to do, even if it means taking a naive young blonde girl & putting her on the cover of every magazine. I know now that my knee gave out on me this past summer so that I would have no choice but to stop. My body was shutting down and needed rest. It's funny how the Man upstairs works. Right now, I have to go-- I really want to watch 'Saved' with Mandy Moore and re-runs of Sex and the City. I want to enjoy all of the simple things that I missed over the past few years due to working way too much. Being married is GREAT and I can't wait to start my family! There is so much change going on right now... not only with me, but in the world, as well. So, the next time you see my face, hear one of my songs or even if I'm the topic of your next conversation, please remember that times are changing & so am I. She is not "2 legit to quit"!
I hope she does go forever.....her career has knowhere to go now.....she realizes she has burnt out.....people don't want that sort of pop these days, she will come back with something different I guess! Her PR must be in a rut right now! "Where do we go from here?" | |

I hope I never have to see or hear from her again, but something tells me she'll be back when the $$$ is running low. Unfortunately, the same people will buy her shit and make her richer again, but at least I know I won't be contributing to her wealth. If she does come back "re-invented" as someone said above, let's hope she at least takes some singing lessons during her time off. She needs to learn how to dance too, so hopefully she'll sell the pole and take some real dance lessons. | |

I agree completely. Although she'll only be back if her record company (whoever they are) will take her back. I can't imagine too many record execs leaping at the chance to sign her up in a year or two, but you never know. In the mean time, she should get in touch with Prince, see if he'll teach her the scales. He might also like to tell her that microphones are supposed to be switched on during 'live' performances. I have a horrible feeling this might be a "retiring to search for the ladder" stunt and she'll be back next month with a hideous new single. I hope I'm wrong. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP. |
