I don't know; when my husband and I saw the "incident," the first words out of my mouth were, "Janet didn't need to to that. She is so far above that." In fact, I was SO upset about the whole thing, that's when I started to read and eventually post on message boards because I was curious about the opinions of other fans. When Janet issued her statement, I chose to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe her story. I just chose to believe that it was an accident even though I'm not naive to the fact that artists will do all types of things in the name of artistic expression, probably more accurately describe as promotion. In fact looking at that "replay" in one of the previous posts, it looks more and more like both Justin and Janet were completely shocked, but who in the public really knows for sure?

That said, I still think that people completely over-reacted to the incident whether or not Janet is telling the truth. And also, Justin DID NOT receive his share of criticism for even agreeing to rip-off her clothes in the first place and seemed to leave Janet alone to deal with the backlash. I mean, Janet may have said to him, "Let me handle this," or whatever, but Justin could have at least issued a statement countering this "I was a victim of circumstance" rumor that was circulating in the media.

Finally, without a doubt, this year has been challenging for Janet. In regard to her Damita Jo cd, I agree that there are some strong tracks; in fact, most of the cd packed with potential hit singles. Of course, it's not The Velvet Rope or some of her earlier works, but it's still a respectable release and deserved more airplay. Yet outside of the disappointing sales or lack of critical acclaim for her current release, the real sadness for me is that with all the "wardrobe malfunction" references, Janet and her music will forever be remembered for this single mistake, whether accidental or not, in an otherwise brilliant career. It just breaks my heart 'coz I've always admired her music, her dancing, and her public persona.

I really appreciate your response to this.

That said, I do believe Damita Jo was unfairly lambasted on account of the hysteria in February. DJ doesn't live up to TVR, but it was better than AFY and I enjoyed it more than "janet." IMHO. And as far as Ernest Hardy's thoughts on Damita Jo (the writer of the "Fear of a Black Titty" article), this guy has proven to be an "impulse writer." Back in 2003, he wrote a harsh review of Meshell Ndegeocello's Comfort Woman LP only to take it back 3 months later in an article called "Forgive Me, Me'shell." rolleyes

Wait a minute. I've got a question. biggrin

After the Super Bowl, wasn't she going around saying it was an accident. Then later say that ABC nor Mtv had any idea of the stunt? hmm So which was it; an accident or a stunt? confuse

thanks.

Doesn't she wear body jewelry all of the time? Heck, maybe she wore it JUST IN CASE there was an "accident." biggrin

True. What's really is a trip how Punk Ass Timberlake disassociated himself from her after the Tittygate scandal in order to apease the racist media. Timberlake is a fraud and I am glad that his exposed for the true racist that he is. He pimped his way to stardom using Black Music. However, when a scandal breaks out, he tries to set himself apart from anything remotely Black. Without a doubt, Timberlake has proven that he has fear of a black titty.

Interesting piece!

I've been a fan of Janet since 86 (shit, nearly 20 years ago omg) and Control and despite that, I've always felt that her music has failed to grow up at the same rate her audience has.

Back with the Janet album, I could indulge her highly-sexed ramblings for a bit, but it's gotten very old. I've always felt she should leave the teeny-bopper songs to the teeny-bopper generation. There are younger women doing that sort of pop music nowadays, and both Janet and her fan-base are too old for that shit.

Don't get me wrong - "Damita Jo" had a few great moments, but it is mostly bubblegum. Listening to it makes me feel old, which is ridiculous when you consider Janet's age!

I still think Rhythm Nation and The Velvet Rope were her two finest albums... but instead of building on those great pieces of work she's tried to revert to the bubble-gum pop better left to the Britney generation.

This is exactly how I feel about Janet.I feel that she's stuck in a "sex-kitten with-a-smile" mode and I don't hear much growth in her music.

TurnItUp

I have been a Janet fan for quite sometime even before Control, but I must say I didn't expect her to get the negative backlash that she got after the Superbowl incident. At first I thought the media just wanted to come after her because of Michael and this whole allegation thing that happened just before her incident, but now that I think about it more, I think the media has kept a close microscope on Janet all this time hoping she would slip and fall because she has always been referred to as the "normal" Jackson. The one that has never had any scandal and has always kept distant from her family and the negative media attention; Until now. sad

I don't think that the Superbowl incident was that bad, but the media and FCC have done a good job disecting Janet. And something else some others said earlier, I agree that Rhythm Nation and Velvet Rope are 2 of her best albums because they had a message. I am kinda getting tired of this over-sexed stuff that Janet keeps going on and on about. When she came out with it back in 93 with That's the way Love goes that was different because we had never really heard or seen this side of Janet before and she was in her late 20's.

Janet you're almost 40, you don't have to keep singing XXX rated stuff to prove how adult and non-innocent you are. Please go back to singing about stuff with a meaning. Better yet, take some voice lessons and learn how to sing and sing well and sing live!

At the Grammys this year when they first chose Janet to pay tribute to Luther and Patti Labelle was chosen second that didn't sound right. Patti should've been first choice. Patti and Luther are sangers, not singers, sangers. Janet is neither. Let your voice be the next thing you work on instead of trying to come up with how nastier you can get. confused

nod I could'nt agree with you more. It seems to me that sometimes they don't won't to reconize Patty the way that they should. She has paid more dues in the biz then most performers out there (with exception of Aretha and Tina). I was glad to see her on the Diva special b/c she tore it up. Go Head Ms.Patty.

I think the incident was done intentionally for attention just like the rediculous kiss between Madonna and what's her name on the awards show.

Regardless as to whether it was intentional or not, the media has blown both incidents way out of proportion.
