what's the best talking heads album?

I have Remain in Light which is amazing and I just got The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads & Stop Making Sense (both live albums) which I'm loving right now.

What studio album should I go for next as they all seem to be highly rated? I'm sure Talking Heads are quite popular amongst orgers.

I was thinking maybe Little Creatures because And She Was sounds pure 80's which I love.

I'm also trying to get hold of the movie Stop Making Sense which is proving to be fairly difficult strangely enough. Is it really better than SOTT movie?

i am a talking heads fanatic, so i'll try to contain my enthusiasm to a helpful level of drool and heartfelt blather...

first off, if you have the $$$ to make the plunge, go ahead and get the talking heads box set, called "once in a lifetime". it's really REALLY worth the money, and you get a DVD of all their videos and a really cool book with tons of pictures, and enough talking heads music to last you a long time.

HOWEVER,

if you can't afford the box set, i strongly recommend you get FEAR OF MUSIC, which is just fantastic and brilliant and funky and quirky. i also recommend a two-disc live album that just got released on CD for the first time a couple of months ago, called THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS. if you like REMAIN IN LIGHT and if you find yourself enjoying FEAR OF MUSIC, then this two-disc live album will make you do backflips, cuz it's a document of the heads circa the early '80s, pre-"burning down the house" and pre bigtime fame.

on the other side of the spectrum, NAKED is a really nice talking heads album, and it's easily scored in the used bins at your local wrecka stow for cheep. it's their last full studio album, and while it's mainly david byrne getting into his whole south american thing, it's got a really nice, pretty soulful vibe going all the way through it. i like it a lot.

and as for STOP MAKING SENSE, it's a really freakin' fantastic concert movie. i don't know if i would call it better than the SOTT movie, cuz it's a little bit apples and oranges, but i think there are more memorable, iconic moments in STOP MAKING SENSE than prince allowed himself to have in SOTT. plus you get a couple of live tom tom club songs! dancing jig

I can't disagree with anything that Anxiety has said.
Remain in light is amazing! One of my favs.
I wouldn't hesitate to pick up
Speaking In Tongues or
More Songs About Buildings And Food

Little creatures has great songs on it,
but I think that Tongues and More Songs
are stonger albums. Tongues is funky as hell.
More Songs is more raw with well written
songs and awesome lyrics!
Hell, even the first album "77" has amazing
songs on it! like Don't Worry About The Government,
& The Book I Read.
Eventually, get them all nod woot! music

dancing jig !!Talking Heads!! dancing jig

Thanks Anxiety. I might go for the box set because I'd love to see some of their videos (80's videos were the best)

but I would also prefer to own some albums first...hmmmm

I'm getting fed up with compilations because I always end up getting the albums
anyway then I have the same songs twice over (eg. Stevie Wonder - At The Close of a Century has the entire Innervisions album bar one song)

I saw Fear of Music for quite cheap I'll definitely check that one out and is Little Creatures any good?

little creatures is good, but in my opinion, it's not essential. if you get a best-of comp of any kind, you've pretty much got the best stuff from little creatures on it. this and "true stories" are my least favorite talking heads albums, but then again, their worst stuff was better than a lot of people's best stuff...

Thanks. Maybe I'll just buy them all in chronological order if they're all that good. And download the videos.

I'll add my opionated two cents.

REMAIN IN LIGHT is a masterpiece. Basically all of their releases are with, the exception of a few. REMAIN IN LIGHT, SPEAKING IN TONGUES, and LITTLE CREATURES are probably more accessible in the pop-sense. All three are stellar. The first four releases are as well. It's amazing to see how much they grew in just a few years. Please stay away from TRUE STORIES and NAKED. Dreadful, IMO. The air had definitely been let out of the tires. The newly expanded STOP MAKING SENSE is an awesome live album (with a few overdubs here and there). I actually think the film is slightly better than SOTT. Saw both films back to back at a film festival a few years ago. Pretty amazing to see them both together.

Also, the first release from Tina and Chris' side band, THE TOM TOM CLUB, is a another must-have.
