VH1 Hip Hop Honors....

Is it just me...or does the crowd seem to be a little too young and a lot "non-urban" to be celebrating 30 years of hip hop?
you look better on your facebook page than you do in person hmph!

I was thinking the same thing.
I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back.
I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.
I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish.
And I am

And Hammer? Who invited Hammer? What is the connection between Hammer and Tupac?

I haven't seen it, but consider this...It's VH-1! That should explain a lot.

They were both residents of Oakland.

Well, they certainly couldn't cram everyone in with just a few hours. That's why they referred to it as "the first" hip hop honors. In the next couple of years, they'll give it up to LL, Kurtis Blow, etc, etc.

nod Dougie, Nas, and PE definitely took it to the next leve. It is a pity and a damn shame that they didn't give it up for Slick Rick, Kurtis Blow, and LL.

They were! '92-'95 was when "gangsta rap" was at its peak and it was Pac who encouraged Hammer to bascially "keep it hood"-thus resulting in dropping the "MC" from his name, putting out "Pumps And A Bump" and the album The Funky Headhunter

falloff

hmmm Maybe, she is still searching for some thug love(50 and Lil Jon weren't enough). She has lost her dignity and marbles.

Tell me about it! I just don't remember her ever acting like this before. Ever since she hooked up 50 cent, she has been acting really ghetto and hoochie. Very tacky, indeed.

So we have Tupac to thank for killing off Hammer's career smile

No, Hammer is a grown man with his own mind. I don't think Pac put a gun to his head and made him do it. lol

Interesting how you said "I don't think Pac put a gun to his head...". Most artists you'd just say, "he didn't put a gun to his head" but with Pac, well he just might have. wink

Regardless, it just adds to 2pacs legacy for me. smile

(Not to hate on Hammer too much, I enjoyed him early on for what we did, fun danceable hip-hop, but by the time Hammerman debuted I was praying for his occupational demise )

hammer and Pac knew each other....and Hammer does have a place in Hip Hop history.

oh...on the Vivica thing...its funny that someone said she looked like a hooch and yet my daughter (13) thought she looked fly...but let's not talking about what is age appropriate cuz Madonna should have sat her ass down a few times and we gave her the "creative" or "reinvention" pass. I don't think Vivca's little dance routine wasn't age appropriate. some of ya'll youngsters are gonna wish ya'll could drop it like its hot at 40. Hell I do! smile

I thought she looked cute on this show and looked like a hooch on the VMAs.
But let this be known, Vivca has ALWAYS been a hoodrat. I think ppl get caught in a pretty face...but the girl is ghetto.

I thought the show was BORING!!! My daughter was pissed because Nas didn't know the TuPac song and was completely reading it...I was mad because where were the LADIESSSSSsssss....no latifah, lyte, s -n - p, sparky d, roxanne shante, foxy brown, etc....no female performances. mad

we both had fun with the beasties and public enemy. The one thing my daughter was amazed with what the difference in how songs were done....the hook wasn't as important as the flow....she was tripping on Fat Joe doing South Bronx and there wasn't some catchy hook every 8 bars....he was just flowin'....

It was only good from that standpoint....

don't get me wrong vivica fox is a very attractive woman and i hope i look that great when i'm in my 40's but i still think she could've dressed down a bit and still looked sexy.

i thought the show was exciting and wished i could've been there. it's true that salt n' pepa should have performed.

isn't it amazing how young all the old skool rappers look? they must be in their early 40's by now? doug fresh looks like a kid.

was nas really reading from a card?????

She's 40 not 140! razz

When I think I'm too old to be listening to hip-hop, I remember that the pioneers are 40-somethings also. Then I don't feel so bad. smile

This was the first annual one and they focused on different aspects of Hip Hop (i.e. Grafitti Art, The Rock Steady Crew Dancers, KRS One is an articulate rapper that also educates, Public Enemy was political, DJ Kool Herc and DJ Hollywood were the first DJ's, Sugarhill Gang was the first crossover success for a rap group even though they were not the first rappers ever, A tribute to Tupac etc.). VH1 would need hours and hours to focus on Hip Hop...who knows, the next award show may focus on the women in hip hop, they're so many arenas to cover. Last but not least, my only gripe is that they waited until the end of the show to let MC Hammer dance mad he was tearing it up and the show ended!!!!!

This was only the first annual, I'm pretty sure LL Cool J, Eric B. and Rakim, Whodini, Kurtis Blow, Biggie, Queen Latifah etc. will get their shine on future shows...look at is as the Soul Train Awards or Grammys or any other music award show, everyone in the industry is not the focus every year, they have their time.

Girl, I am glad you mentioned it. This one of things that pissed me off also. It seemed liked female rappers were only good enough to anounce artist and not perform. Where do they get off pulling this shit? I might of known VH1 would pull some half ass shit like this.
