The New Duran Duran Album: Really... MEDIOCRE

We all have our opinions...So if u don't agree with me, it's all good...

I think a few songs are downright embarassing... (Bedroom Toys, anyone?)

thank the creator for the nice packaging on the limited edition...

This is SOOOOO not classic Duran. The only thing classic about it is the original line up... I think this album is as fragmented and haphazard as all of their Post-Big Thing albums... (and realize that i've been there since 1981 and I have heard all of their music, so I can truthfully take on an educated discussion)

Yeah, there's a few decent tracks, but as a whole, I am not impressed... I'll definitely give it a few more listens and I still have to check out the DVD (which may give insights as to why the record came out this way),

I have yet to get this. I have the Wedding album, which I thought was fantastic. I think the "classic" days are gone...but I feel they have some good stuff left to contribute...so, I'll probably get it. I don't have that many expectations for it though. Some of their output has been spotty since Big Thing.

Agreed! There are definitely some good songs to be had on this record, but from almost every review I've read on this record, people treat this like it's the best album they've done.... Don't believe the hype... Judge for yourself!!!

I think that most people are just moist because this is the first record from the original line up in 21 years and the nostalgia is taking over....

same here. I think the concept is exciting, but I'll wait to hear the execution. If there are a few fun songs on it, I'll be happy.

I watched the DVD last night... that makes the album worth it.

it's got interesting backstage footage but no insight as to why they sold out and worked with trendy producers. I read a post somewhere on this site, where they said that the live songs were "incredible." Take another listen... the vox (Simon and Andy) are off key in several places in several songs.... bandwagons are a terrible thing to jump on....

I've heard the record 2 times now, and it gets better on the second listen. I just don't see it getting a lot of rotation on Clubkid radio... there's too much good stuff out there to settle, ya know?

Well, i follow them also since 1983, and Rio is, and will be their best work IMO. But this is not just a reunion album ,it is just great!
I play it for 5 days now over and over, and it's getting better every time i hear it!

A song like bedroom toys is amazing! Same for track number 8 (forget it's name right now)
I also like Liberty, Medazzaland and Poptrash, but it wa sdifferent, they have their happy sound back, and that is it.

If you like Duran Duran, you'll like this album for sure!
the beautiful ones, you always seem to loose

It's really hard to get a record deal if you don't.

Well, yeah! This is the new Duran Duran. BUT, Roger's drumming is pretty classic. Love his fills and solos!

I nearly titled this thread "VinaBlue is gonna kill me but...."

smile

Didn't see ya at Wendy & Lisa last night... did ya come?

Back to DD... I will say this, I am quickly becoming obsessed with "Sunrise"
I will also say this, I was totally disappointed with the new Bjork and new Tears For Fears, and both albums (after weeks/months) are growing on me... so perhaps there is hope yet....

Of course there is!

(I didn't go to W&L last night... thanks for reminding me! err I'm moving so things are hectic right now.) LOL @ VinaBlue is gonna kill me giggle

See, I wasn't too into Sunrise at first either. I heard it live first, last year. I downloaded it from that groovy site... or somewhere.. I thought it was pretty cheesy, but now I love it! The new album, I also downloaded a few weeks ago and my reaction was lukewarm at first. (I will buy it tonight and watch the dvd... can't wait for that!) Now I play the album once a day at least. I find myself hearing songs I thought were so-so in my head throughout the day, like Want You More and Nice. Bedroom Toys I loved right away, along with Finest Hour. Still Breathing I have loved since I heard the live version last year, same with Taste the Summer, which should have been the first single, IMO. What Happens Tomorow sounds way better now, thanks to those cheesy producers... all they did was turn the bass down so it isn't so muddy, but it makes a difference.

Yeah it probably just has to grow on you, especially if you had high expectations. There are more than hints of what they've done in the past, but one can't honestly expect a complete retread of their old hits. I thought Medazzaland was better than expected. I didn't buy too many of their releases after Notorious. I was aware of them, liked a couple of songs but just wasn't feeling the direction and changes. Wedding Album definitely brought them back and Medazzaland was nice switch. The anticipation was quite high, and I think the results are better than average.

I love the CD but I at first listen I thought that Chains and One of Those days slowed the album down a bit...Chains grew on me but I think One of Those days is the weakest song on the record...
Let the rain come down...17 days....
