Next Week: Bowie Reality Tour Live DVD!!!

I'm already drooling in anticipation for this one. Next to Prince's Musicology tour, seeing Bowie perform live this year was un-freakin-believable. It's amazing to think that this man had a pack-a-day smoking habit, not to mention all the other ways he abused his body throughout the '70s and '80s, and he can still look so good, perform so well, and still have that golden voice (of course, his hard living started catching up with him near the end of the tour, though he seems pretty well on the mend).

And to add to the excitement, Amazon.com is offering a pre-sale on this DVD for ten measly bucks!!! woot!

I just picked up Heathen yesterday. I have no assesment other than the first 4 are really good. Sunday is awesome. Then again I like the blend of electronic music with rock. I can hear tinges of the "old" bowie in song 4...but I am not sure what that would be...just I know it is.

Is this part of the trilogy? I recall that being Hours I think. Again I pose myself the question of why have I not gotten into him as I should...as a music lover, I should. It's the rock and roll thing I am sure...I am drawn to music with that electronic element. It's why I liked Outside so much.

Another thing is I know me...I crack that door and once it clicks, I'll have to start getting it all. I can say that at least he has everything enhanced and re-issued already, so the music is ready when I am. When it happens I'll have no idea where to start. Better question is where to go once I get through Heathen. I liked that song I'm the DJ...but not sure what that's on or if I'd like it.

Sigh...yet another band my partner won't like...though I think he'll get into Bowie more than Prince and other Purple shit that I put on. He has his Celtic Music and I have my Prince. biggrin

The "trilogy" you may be thinking of is the trio of Low, "Heroes" and Lodger, which a lot of people call "the Berlin trilogy" or the "Eno trilogy", even though not all three albums were recorded in Berlin or produced by Brian Eno (he contributed a lot to all three albums, though - and he worked a lot on Outside and Earthling).

The song you're talking about is "DJ", and it's on the Lodger album. Low/"Heroes"/Lodger are three albums I highly recommend - it's my favorite period for Bowie, especially if you include the album that came right before the "trilogy" (which was Station To Station) and the album that came right after (Scary Monsters and Super Creeps) - he had a really amazing run in the late '70s. nod

As for Outside/Earthling/Hours being a trilogy, I just think that's a matter of packaging and not any kind of artistic/thematic intent. Outside was supposed to be the first part of a "hyperdrama" trilogy in which each of the albums would carry on a story, but the second installment has been put off (Bowie said in an interview this year that it's very possible a second installment could still happen); Earthling found Bowie tinkering with jungle music; and Hours seemed (to me, anyway) to be kind of a melancholy meditation on aging. I don't see anything he's done as having the same kind of throughline as the so-called "Berlin Trilogy", though I really like what he's been doing since the mid-90s.

there was also the trilogy that started with outside and included hours...but, since db get A.D.D attacks, i don't think he ever did the 3rd part of the trilogy.

and this dvd looks amazing! i'm wet just thinking about those songs and that tour! still kinda salty that i missed the final night in chicago...that's the night he did breaking glass! ugh...i can't believe i missed breaking glass!

i think he did all kindsa stuff from Low that night...i was LIVID. but i was still on a high from seeing him the first night, so i wasn't too horribly embittered (even though Low is only my freakin' FAAAVORITE bowie album in the world, grrrrr).

i'd be willing to bet really good money that Hours isn't the second part of any trilogy - it certainly isn't a continuation of the Outside album. the second installment of Outside was supposed to be called "2.Contamination", and supposedly the tracks have been laid down for this project already. the whole thing is supposed to center around a dystopian future NYC and a rash of "art crimes" (check out the liner notes for the Outside album).

the impetus for the Hours album was a project called "Toy", which was supposed to be a project in which Bowie re-recorded a bunch of his old pre-Ziggy songs from the late '60s...which kinda mutated into a soundtrack for a video game called "Omnicron"...which turned into the Hours album.

or that's my understanding of it all, anyway.

hmmm...well, you'd know better than i. i thought hours was the second installment but, you're right, there is no connection musically.

yeah, low is possibly my favorite bowie record and i was heartbroken that i missed so much of that material! i went to the first two nights and had a great, great time. no complaints about those shows...i'm just a glutton and i KNEW the friday night show would be the best one! what kills me even more was that i had 10th row tickets for the show but since my friend came up for the first two, i figured i'd sell the tickets for friday (at cost, mind you) and go to the two shows with her. that hurts even more...to think i could've seen all that shit from 10 rows!!!

ANd for some reason I thought Earthling was supposed to be the next installment...but wasn't. I recall hearing that it wasn't anyway.

I wish Prince would have mixed his shows up like Bowie did. Not aware of all the material, but it sounds like a Bowie concert can have almost any set and does. Sounds like a great time.

Now watch, I'll end up getting all into him and he won't come around again. boxed I shouldn't have said that.

It's worth it just for "Cacuts" and the other "Heathen" songs. I loved that album! Too bad there's no "Slow Burn" though. Looks like a great set. Can't wait!

I thought "Toy" became "Heathen"? I know that he re-recorded a song called "You're Got A Habit Of Leaving". Never heard the original but the remake is awesome (it's on the "Slow Burn" import single, which has a few of good songs not on the album). There is also a song on the bonus disc of the special edition of "Heathen" called "Conversation Piece". I would have liked to hear "Toy" as well as "2.Contamination". Sigh....

actually, you might be right on that...good catch. i just remember the story on bowie recording "toy" with tony visconti, and he was still rockin' the long hair circa "hours".

I think I read that on some British music site (a really popular one) and it was dated the fall of the year before "Heathen" was released. I put two and two together and figured it out. I guess since some of the tracks were released through singles and special edtions, that "Toy" won't happen as a full album.

On the topic of the "Reality" DVD, Best Buy has this special where music DVDs are two dollars off and it lists the price of "Reality" in the ad as $9.99, along with a few others (notably, Jay-Z's "Streets Is Watching"). Can't wait to pick it up for that low price!

Having seen (and followed on-line) ONA, Musicology and Bowie's Reality tour, I'd say that P mixed it up on ONA even more than Bowie did during the Reality tour. Of course, Musicology was more packaged, probably for the casual fan, as opposed to anyone that would be here.....
