Why did Kier Kirby never have a solo career?

It ticks me off to think about it too much...the woman had such a distinctive, amazing, soulful voice - I know she worked as a DJ for a while after Deee-Lite disbanded, then she sued a video game company for using her image...then nada.

I suppose it's her life and if she wants to put her pop career behind her it's her choice, but dang. How many people get to be born with a voice like that? mad

sigh

I hear you. The music world would be just a bit brighter had she chosen to stay in it.

i don't understand why really great performers give it all up for DJing...i'm also a fan of princess superstar, and her DJing seems to have eclipsed her rapping/playing over the past few years. is DJing really THAT gratifying and/or lucrative?!

what if you had a voice of gold and were drop dead gorgeous and could rock a skin-tight catsuit and a bright red flip - would you still choose DJing over performing?

At one time, info on her site hinted at the release of a solo project. Over time, 'soon' changed to 'whenever'...and I don't even know if there's a mention of it there anymore. I was looking forward to it -- I have some of her d'n'b collaborations, and I really like them. I think she has a sexy voice, and she's not hard to look at either. drooling

I miss her too. She should've totally gone the route of Bjork, post-Sugarcubes and wowed the world.

I think she was a dj/producer originally so was sort of just going back to her roots.. She is on 2 tracks on Play with Bootsy. So cool to hear her again. She pops up here and there dj-ing but I have not been able to catch her set yet. Was lucky enough to see Dee-lite at the Forum in Kentish Town back in '93 or was it '94 either way she was faberooonie...

I have to reply...barely recognized the name on the title on the thread...Bad superspaceboy...bad!

If there is one group I would LOVE to see do a reunion...it would be them. I really wish she'd get it together...but I am not holding my breath. I do love her so. GREAT voice. I remember being so into them and then I fell out after the 2nd album…and didn’t get back into them until the remix album. By then it was too late. I finally discovered the 3rd one and was really blown away. Aside from the obvious drug references, I can’t fathom how it failed on the charts. Probably infighting (Dimitry and Kier broke up…though I thought he was gay) and towa was leaving. Also the first choice of Picnic in the Summertime as a single wasn’t a good one. I think most had lost interest by then and they were mostly considered to be a fashion band. Maybe the switch to grunge had something to do with it as most bands similar to them (Black Box and C&C) went by the wayside around the same time (but for different reasons).

My personal assessment as to why nothing has materialized for her since is…I have heard she sux as a dj. I also think that either she was or still is doing drugs. Dimitry did DJ stints here and there…like at raves and whatnot…same as Ani (good I remember the time they were supposed to be at a rave I was going to and though not listed on the flyer, I was determined to find Miss Lady Kier). Towa, well he did his 3.5 fantastic albums…I really think he was the music behind them. Apparently he’;s a dad now and is doing the family thang…but I eagerly await his next. I do have to say tht many of the female vocalists he’s had on his albums, sound like Kier.

For those of you that were listening at the time...Did you ever call the Party Happening People line? It was listed in the liner notes on Dew Drops. By the time I got the album...like all rave parties, it had been shut down.

I too nearly shed tears of blood when they broke up cry

Truly a landmark group that has been so severly understated in the music world. I can't even begin to tell you the impact those 3 albums they released had on me. Dewdrops in the Garden is flat out a masterpiece. I agree, she should have released something on her own. Thank God Towa Tei had a solo career. I'd hate to think that there would only be 3 experiences in total.

Groove is in the heart is one of the most perfect pop songs EVER! woot!

OK, I have to ask...wasn't she JUST in Chicago? I know she was playing somewheres...and she was at Halsted Street Market Days. Did you miss her? I was so insanely jealous that she was there.

She had a single or 2 on her own about 8 or 9 years ago that wasn't so bad. Couldn't distinguish it from Deee-Lite really.

Twas on Sunday. Oh she was. I was half joking with a friend that due to my unfortunate absense, that she HAD to go down and take a picture for me. Now, half joking cuz my friend (who lives mere blocks from there) has NEVER been to Halsted days. I wouldn't let it go...I was a tad elentless about it but more egging her on (she loves Kier as much as we do).

Well, I went a bit tii far as the next day I got an email berating me for my actions and I stood corrected. But we ended up chalking it to her period razz
