Give It Up for The Barkays

One of my favorite bands is The Barkays. This group has been around since the 1960s and has really put out some hardcore funk. I have some of their albums from the 1970s, all of their albums from the 1980s and 1990s, three of their greatest hits albums, and still can't get enough.

The Barkays are some of the wildest motherfuckers out there. Over the years, some of them have straightened their hair, bleached their hair, streaked their hair, shaved it up one side....you name it, they have done it.

They also put on a hell of a live performance. I saw them in 1985 and Larry Dodson had a boa constrictor and put it between his legs and swung it like it was his dick. Then, he put the snake's head in his mouth. I saw them again in 1999 and Larry not only had a boa constrictor but he also had a yellow python. They really put on a show that night! Larry snapped his fingers and a big burst of fire came from his hand. The funk was so hard and loud that when I left the venue, I could not hear out of my ears as loud as I should have. That was entertainment.

Anyone else like The Barkays?

As much as I know their legacy & music, I am crimanally negligent of not having any of their records in my collection. It will be resolved, but just as a favor, what's the best way to start out?

The FUNK series Greastest Hits
Any album??

Where should I begin??

"Funk Essentials...The Best of The Barkays" Volumes 1 and 2 covers a lot of their stuff they did on Mercury Records. There is another "The Best of the Barkays" that covers a lot of their stuff they did on Stax Records....this one features the long version of "Holy Ghost". "The Barkays...All Time Greatest Hits" on K-Tel Records are their hits that have been re-recorded.

As for individual albums, I have:

As One
Nightcruising
Propositions
Dangerous
Banging The Walls
Animal
48 Hours

They also did a single (which was never followed by an album) in the early 1990s called "Put A Little Nasty On It" which is also a jam.

I don't like their new album they did this year at all though.

Don't forget about the 12 Inches also. I have "She Talks To Me With Her Body" and "Sex-O-Matic". These two 12 Inches are also included on the Funk Essentials "The Best of the Barkays" (Volume 2). I wish I could find the 12 Inch of "Do It (Let Me See You Shake)".
