F*CKING "ENHANCED" EDITIONS OF RECENT ALBUMS

Inspired by the thread about Usher (of which I understood only about 20%) I wanted to
vent my rage at the absurd promotional techniques of recordcompanies these days.

I remember back in the day (cough cough, like 6 years ago lol) the first time I noticed
that an album I owned was shortly after it's release being "re-released" with extras was
with Bjork's debut album "Debut".

All of a sudden it was re-released to include "Play Dead" and also the lyrics were printed
in the booklet of the new edition.

That pissed me off. evil But I also noticed that it stirred a bit of a buzz since it must
have been a rather new trend for a rather new album to be re-released with included
perks so short after the initial release.

But recently things have gone from bad to worse. Half of my recently acquired albums
have been released again to include in some cases complete extra cd's for almost no
extra money.

That makes me feel like I was ripped off in the first place. And it's surely all about the
money because you can't try to sell the idea to me that you did not have this concept
for the album ready before the original release even hit the streets.

And that freakin gets on my tits. If I really like an artist's music I want all their new
songs. But it's not fair to make me buy the exact same album again just to gain
access to the now added "bonus disc containing exclusive new studio songs and a
very special live acoustic set"

barf

How many albums do you remember this happening with?

From the top of my head I can think of these:

Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun

Was re-issued a short while later to include an extra disc with bonus material.
I think in Holland there was even yet another version that contained a hell of
a lot of new studiotracks from various projects of hers and some live stuff.

Bjork - Post

Made me wet my pants wen it was re-issued to include a 4 track disc with two
new songs and Brodski orchestra re-workings of two old Bjork songs. But yet
I had to buy it. grrr.

Ryan Adams - Gold

I nearly fumed flames when I saw the album in another town only a month
later with an added bonus disc with several new studiotracks AND a bunch of
live recordings. I was so pissed of that I did not buy it. yet now, I still regret
not having heard those songs. grrrrr

Norah Jones - Feels Like Home

Exact same story. I saw it in a store last week and noticed it now contains
an extra disc with a few studiotracks, a few live tracks and even a video!!!

Prince - Musicology

Does not contain any other songs or content, but is now being sold in one
of those regular jewelboxes over here in Holland instead of that awful piece
of cardboard crap. grrrrr

Black Eyed Pees - Elephunk

Now released as a freakin "special tour edition" containing an extra cd with
bonus tracks, remixes, instrumentals and videos. grrr grrr grrr

Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts

This one almost topped the cake. yet on the other hand it is called rather
whimsically a "special edition" yet it boasts a bonus disc with TEN cover
songs from various projects. All of them bloody brilliant. Grrrr x 1000 on
this piece of marketing.

Moby - Play
I sold my original on ebay after buying the rerelease with Gwen Stefani's vocals on "Southside".

Lacuna Coil - Comalies
The U.S. rerelease comes in a slipcase with a bonus disc of alternate versions. After getting this, I sold my original on ebay to somebody in Mexico.

Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon
Rerelease is the same deal as Lacuna Coil. It also has an uncensored video of one the tracks. I haven't sold my original single disc of this yet.

Janet Jackson - All For You
The special edition includes the remix of "Son Of A Gun" and a DVD of all her videos from the last ten years. I still have the original because the rerelease cut out the explicit track "Would You Mind" to make room for the "Son Of A Gun" remix (which also has the expletives removed most likelky so it can get sold in Wal-Mart without an advisory label).

These are the only ones I can remember right now. I'm sure I have more though.

Which one? If it's the Outside/Earthling/Hours box, I've got it. It's a piece of thick silver cardboard housing the limited edition double CD reissues. You're missing nothing.

Lalah Hathaway's new album is enchanced.

Some enhanced albums are cool, they include videos & sometimes interviews.

It depends on how you view enhanced. I can't stand enhanced CDs that only includes DIRECT LINK to the artist's site.

I interpreted the question as "Which albums were later rereleased differently that you would have preferred to buy if you knew about them beforehand?"

You are so right. It seems that movies get rereleased on DVD every other year with something new added. That really burns my butt.

Yeah, I've pretty much decided that I won't re-buy a DVD anymore, unless it is a new cut of the film, or has an assload of extras.

I saw that, but I didn't like Moby that much that I wanted all the b-sides. I really liked the new version of "Southside" though.

Are we also talking about deluxe editions, remasters, etc? Does I don't mind so much. In a lot of those cases, they are giving you a whole new extra CD and new booklet for albums that are worthy of this process. The ones that really piss me off are the ones that are very new. Alicia Keys did this very recently. I think they are pretty common in Europe. Consider Kylie's recent albums!

Pet shop boys grabbed all of my dough last year when I went into a PSB Seizure and had to have all of the reissues. I do have to say it was well worht it as they "needed" to come out with cleaner sounding discs. They actually held out on Nightlife. Though there was a popular demand to release it (those PSB fans just want it for the extra trax...not for cleaner sound). Neil has said that it was too soon to do one as it was only released about 5 years ago. I really respect that they don't want to gauge their fans.

But I am still waiting on the reissue of "Relentless". I'll snap that up in a heartbeat.

ANd any that Prince does of course.

They couldn't fit anything else on the disc - they would've needed a second.

I think his "issues" with Sony had something to do with that. I heard he wasn't willing to release his vault stuff through them until things got resolved.

I must say that I was disappointed with the extra content myself. But the sound quality on the remasters is fucking amazing.

You know what? I've been buying those for the last few months online, mostly. I don't think those are bad reissues or enchaments.

I also didn't understand why "Relentless" wasn't part of the "Very" album. The bonuses that are on there are great though. "Very/Further Listening" is my first PSB studio album and hooked me. "Nightlife" is coming out in Nov, I think. Was it hard/expensive for you to get "Bilingaul". I just bought the a used copy real cheap on Amazon not to long ago and it's amazing! I heard it's harder to get becuase they didn't release the reissue for that one at all in America. The price varies from $33-$40+ while the others can be found for less than or around $15.00 used.

I don't have that problem since I don't like hardly any of the new artists out there. Every time I have bought an enhanced edition of an album, I have welcomed it because it included tracks that were not available on the album 20 plus years ago.

I've had Rick James' "Street Songs" on vinyl since it was in style and when Motown released the 20th Anniversary edition, I was glad to have the rare 12 Inches and the live CD. As for the tracks for the album "Street Songs", now I have it on CD as well as vinyl.

I know what you mean though about feeling like you have been ripped off. If I bought a new release and a few months later they came out with a better one, I would be pissed. The music business these days is strictly about making the most money they can and the hell with the public. What I find rediculous is the various artists compilations of "Now" that has songs that are still in style.

i haven't found the box set, but i did manage to pick up the double-disc reissues of "outside" and "hours" at a tower records storewide 25% off sale last friday. there was quite a bit of stuff on the "hours" bonus disc that i hadn't heard before - namely, the omnikron versions of some of the songs, and the techno version of "the pretty things are going to hell"...the "outside" bonus disc is pretty sweet, too - several b-side tracks, reworkings of songs for film soundtracks, stuff like that. didn't seem like a lot of "must have" bonus material on the "earthling" disc so i passed it up for the time being. i dig these reissues - the packaging is very nice (glossy hardback book binding, kinda like the aladdin sane and ziggy stardust reissues only a bit sturdier) and i can put all my "outside" and "hours" CD singles to pasture now cuz all the singles tracks are on the bonus discs. biggrin
