What are some of the greatest final albums

Some bands go out on a meh note. Others go out with a fucking bang. Name some break up/ final albums that you think are fucking great:

The Beatles- Abbey Road (their last recorded.)
Nirvana- In Utero
Talk Talk- Laughing Stock
Nick Drake- Pink Moon
Neutral Milk Hotel- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Joy Division- Closer
Jimi Hendrix- Electric Ladyland
Pavement- Terror and Twighlight

I want to say Pink Floyds The Wall cuz Final Cut was mostly outtakes from the walll

How is Abbey Road their "last recorded" album? I thought "Let It Be" was half-finished when they broke up and Macca did most of the work by himself. Then there was that public playing on the roof spoof and then it all ended?

What am I missing here?

So if the album was "half finished" would that not make Abey Road the last complete full length to be recorded, not to mention that plenty of people were pissed at Phil Spectors finished product. I could have it all wrong let me know if Im missing something

The Let It Be album had overdubs added by Phil Spector in 1970. But the actual tracks were recorded at the beginning of 1969. Abbey Road was recorded shortly after. wink

Yup.

This illustrates the problem with bands breaking up. Their final album is never really their final album. See Meloh9's post - The Beatles, Joy Division, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, not to mention The Black Crowes, Alice In Chains, Led Zeppelin ... after the final album is released, get ready for a ton of crappy, half-assed live sets, rarities comps and endless "best-of" albums.

nod

Abbey Road was Paul saying, "dudes, let's get back into the studio and make one last album after the Let it Be fuck up."

so tho' Let it Be was released afterwards, Abbey Road was recorded last in the sense of musicians actually laying down the tracks, rather than post-production.

But good, good choices all. Haven't heard the LONS' last joint in a minute and a half!!!

Interesting. I must have forgotten all about this - it's been about a decade since I listened to any of that Beatle stuff. But "Let It Be" has so many classic songs on it (at least a few) seems weird that they would have skipped on those and recorded something else instead. Well alright.

Actually, I think that they've handled the Joy Division posthumous releases very well. They're packaged and put together with the true spirit of the band intact and seem more to give their catelogue justice than a cheap cash-in. The singles collection "Substance" and their box set "Heart and Soul" are about as perfect as you can get for those types of releases. Even their live albums are great and I'm not a big fan of live albums. Only "Still" suffers from being all over the place. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time.

Oh, Substance is essential. I meant Still. And Preston 28 February 1980 was a great show, but a crappy recording.
