Greatest Sophomore Albums Everyone always talks about the "sophomore" slump, but I think there's been some at least a few really really good sophomore efforts
Axis: Bold As Love It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back Neither Fish Nor Flesh (from what I hear) Prince (not his best, but improvement from his first) Paul's Boutique Music of My Mind (stevie's sophomore effort if you count Where I'm cOming from as his first album as an independant artist) Dance To the Music

"Surrealistic Pillow"- Jefferson Airplane
Released in March of 1967, and quickly became part of the soundtrack to the "summer of love"... Contains the hits "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit" , songs that Grace Slick brought with her from her previous group,The Great! Society... "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

"Prince" by Prince is the first one that comes to mind. I'm sure I will think of others later. Andy is a four letter word.

Too legit to quit by Hammer! just kidding! I've got a thing about hammer today for some reason..... Ah, that was not Hammers second..... "lets get it started" was his first (Hammer was still "down" as he hadn't "sold out" yet!) "Please Hammer don't hurt 'em" (1990) was his 2nd!!!

I'm surprised that nobody said Oasis' (What's The Story) Morning Glory. That's definitely got to be one of the best sophomore releases ever.
How about the Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream. Blur's Modern Life Is Rubbish. Radiohead's The Bends Pearl Jam's Vs. Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar

Recent notables that spring to mind:
Mama's Gun - Erykah Badu Voodoo - D'Angelo When the Pawn - Fiona Apple (Hey, what's the deal with eponymous second albums....??) Donny Hathaway - Donny Hathaway Sheryl Crow - Sheryl Crow Prince - Prince Actually, I've been listening to Prince's sophomore effort quite a bit recently, and I really like it. Kind of a bright, upbeat pop record, but starts to give you an impression of his talent and his potential. I got For You a few months back, and i don't think it's anywhere near as good. You really see a progression between those early albums.... (Ok, now I'm rambling.....) Here's a few more:
David Bowie-Man Of Words/Man Of Music Janis Joplin-Pearl (Discounting Big Brother) Badfinger-No Dice (discounting the Ivey's album) John Lennon-Imagine (technically, his fifth album, I think. But those weird sound collage albums don't count, do they?) Paul McCartney-Ram (I think this is actually his third album, but I'm discounting that instrumental soundtrack album, which I don't even think is available) The Faces-Long Player Rod Stewart-Gasoline Alley Blue Oyster Cult-Tyranny And Mutation Aerosmith-Get Your Wings Fleetwood Mac-Rumors (kind of a stretch, but it is the sophomore Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood Mac album) Squeeze-Cool For Cats New Order-Power, Corruption And Lies The Cult-Love The Pogues-Rum, Sodomy & The Lash My Bloody Valentine-Isn't Anything Faster Pussycat-Wake Me When It's Over Skid Row-Slave To The Grind Alice In Chains-Dirt The Verve-A Northern Soul Graham Coxon-The Golden D

Tori Fixx - The Mochasutra (2000) -- great sophomore album. A hip hop classic.
Meshell Ndegeocello - Peace Beyond Passion (1996) -- songs like Free My Heart, Mary Magdalene, Bittersweet, Levitticus: Faggot and God Shiva just seal it for me. She was just hitting us on top of the head with messages. . [Edited 10/11/04 20:43pm]
