Karyn White If Jody Watley gets a tribute thread, so should Karyn White, who IMHO is a really underrated R&B vocalist. She quit the biz in 1995 to raise Terry Lewis' children, so all we have is her back catalogue of 3 albums. I felt she was equally adept at dance & balladry.
TRIVIA: She was handpicked by Babyface & LA Reid over the likes of Chaka and Al Jarreau when they were asked to produce for WB. Songs I Love: The Facts Of Love (from Jeff Lorber's Private Passion LP, for which she provided vocals; this is a duet with Michael Jeffries) The Way You Love Me Secret Rendezvous (such a jam...Happiness is when I, I think of you, and we'll be gettin' together for a rendez-vous... I'll be on time, you bring the wine, and when we lock the door, you'll be all mine...) Superwoman (a great slow jam tribute to the working woman who demands better from her man; could have been a Donna Summer sequel to She Works Hard For The Money) Love On The Line Do Unto Me Ritual Of Love (tribal dance track) Romantic (#1 in '91) The Way I Feel About You (a really joyous pop song) Hungah (a really hot joint with a great groove, tragically overlooked) Walkin' The Dog (sexy and hilarious track about Karyn taming her man...Better keep him on a leash, teach him how to be sweet/ Why does my man wanna roam all over, burying bones on every corner?) NOTE: The 12'' mix is fierce

NOTE: The 12'' mix is fierce The Facts of Love is not a duet...Michael Jeffries does appear on the album and may be singing background on "The Facts of Love" (I have to pull out my cd booklet to double check) but I know for a fact that this particular song features Karyn White only. I looove this song, I have Private Passion on vinyl and CD. I even have the music video on tape from back in the day. I don't think Karen and Terry are still together. I know they had a daughter together, probably in her teens by now!
Slow Down was one of my favorite cuts Other favs are...Romantic, Way You Love Me (the dude in her video was hot!), Facts of Love, The Way I Feel About You She also did some background on a Alexander O'Neil and Johnny Gil (My, My, My, album) cut.

Divorced years ago...they had a daughter while married. Jam and Lewis were on some award show a few years back receiving an honor, he thanked his wife by name and they put the camera on her in the audience and it wasn't Karyn. Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight

Yeah, here is Terry's new wife. I wish I could blow up the pic, but unfortunately, I can't. Sorry.

I like the 12 Inch version of "The Way You Love Me" but I'm sorry, I think "Superwoman" is one of the WORST songs of the 1980s. That song not only bored me to tears but it was played to DEATH. Every damned time you turned on the radio it was on and women were always requesting it even more. To this day, the oldies stations still wear that damned song out. [Edited 10/7/04 8:31am] Andy is a four letter word.

I mixed up "Facts Of Love" with "Not Thru Being With You", which is also great.

[Edited 10/7/04 8:31am] OH MY GOD, BECKY!! Do you remember when Dionne, Patti and Gladys covered this song? and performed in on Oprah..I still have that on VHS.....Patti doing her one-eye popeye screaming, dionne looked afraid of Patti and Gladys just playing it cool.....until the end when each of them tried to outsing each other....oye!! talk about scary.....and the whole time Oprah pumped her arms up and down..up and down..up and down....Oprah felt she was the ultimate "SUPERWOMAN!!".... Space for sale...

I hated their version as it was...The whole Oprah thing adds a whole other scary element. I could just imagine her waiving her hands like the song was written for her.
I don't like it when some artists decide to cover songs because they feel they can sing better than the original artist. In my opinion, thats what these three women did but, sometimes you just don't need all of the vocal acrobatics and theatrics. Sometimes all a song needs is an artist who can make us feel the emotion of the song and thats it and you don't always need a 10 octive voice to do that. Kayrn Whites version was much better to me. I love Patti, Dione, and Gladys but they messed up a good song.
