MADONNA *TRUE BLUE* SURVIVOR ROUND *1*

TRUE BLUE...with the release of this album, fans witness her first real "reinvention" makeover...bye bye BOY TOY.

Stats: RELEASED: 30 June 1986; SOLD: 19 Mil

Papa Don't Preach
Open Your Heart
White Heat
Live To Tell
Where's The Party
True Blue
La Isla Bonita
Jimmy Jimmy
Love Makes The World Go 'Round

Without further ado, I will kick this SURVIVOR off with my vote...something I've known since the first time I heard TB in 1986. JIMMY, JIMMY was the cheesiest, synth-pop, song. And the "Oop shoo boop oop oop sha la la la " - it's just as bad as "scoop scoop scoop scoobily bee bop!"

WHAT WAS MADGE THINKING when this made the album cut?

JIMMY JIMMY must go!

it's weird that Spotlight is an outtake from this album. if it had replaced either Jimmy Jimmy or Love Makes The World Go Round, side 2 of this LP would have been infinitely improved, even if one of the two dogs was still there.

Yeah, that's shit, too.

But One More Chance could at least be retrofitted with a prettier instrumental and redone by a really talented vocalist.

Jimmy Jimmy is simply unsalvageable.

that's true. and OMC could even be salvaged by Madonna. she's shown that she can do that type of song well (I Deserve It, Gone, X-static Process). i don't know what she was thinking when she laid down that vocal. trying to show off the new Evita pipes before it was time, perhaps? anyway, i hate that song. it's just a string of cliches with a painful vocal and an excruciatingly dull music track. barf

i'm not crazy about it. to me, it sounds like a more depressing TUTBMP. and it's a bit heavy-handed, lyrically.

That song always gets me in places. A bit heavy handed (it sure isn't subtle when it comes to depicting AIDS, and the gay friend is just a stereotypical acolyte of Madonna's) but some parts are very raw:

In this life, I loved you most of all/ What for? / Cause now you're gone and I have to ask myself / What for? / People pass by, and I wonder who's next / Who determines who loves best? / Is a there a lesson I'm supposed to learn / In this case, ignorance is not bliss

The song should have been a slow reveal, like a camera panning from a small focus to give you the big picture. Peel off the layers and gradually tell us the story, not hit us from the beginning with I HAVE THIS GAY FRIEND WHO DIED OF AIDS. I'M SO SAD.

the song itself isn't bad, but there's something about the album version that turns me off. i much prefer the live version from the Girlie Show

speaking of STR, that reminds me of something i was going to bring up. rather than doing one for TIC or STR or YCD or GHV2, i think maybe you should do one of all of her non-album singles/b-sides/soundtrack songs/compilation songs. but since there are so many, perhaps kick 2 off at a time, like they're doing on the MJ thread....

Funny you brought that up. I was wondering if I was going to even do YCD...since we've sort of just been through most of the songs (obviously except spotlight). ANd...does I'm Breathless count? To be honest, I only know like 5 songs from IB...never attempted to get into that album...

I like your idea on doing soundtrack/non-album singles together...maybe stick on OMC, TUTBMP, You'll See, etc. in instead of doing STR.
