Andre grew up with Prince as a kid, they were best friends and i think Prince lived with him and his family as a teen!

Oh yeah, I forgot "real love", and I do not mary's version!

She lifted a lot from Janet and Cherrelle, among others.

I remember on there was this round table music critics show on VH1 that was on Sunday morinings (I guess a musical verison/spoof to those political talk shows) and one critic said her CD of the week was Jody's "Greatest Hits" and she said JOdy is the woman Janet wishes she was, or something to that effect. Yes "Control" predates Jody's solo career however most of Jody's big dance hits predate RN, and I hear Jody's influence on tracks like "Escpade" so give some props.

Jody's latest album "Midnight Lounge" was a Japanese only release but was released here in the spring of last year and is amazing. It's got a very sleek and sexy sound to it and is very danceable but not pop like her hits. It's very hip and one of the best albums I've ever heard from somoene that got knocked down to indie status after stardom. She should be on the top of charts again. Does anyone own "Saturday Night Experience" and what do they think of it. It's hard to find now and is (well always was) a really expensive japanese import.

BTW, the great thing about Jody is that her early albums are almost all cut outs, so they can be found very cheap (probably for pennies used) HOWEVER the bad thing is that "Saturday Night Experiences and "Flowers", which I'm still not sure was ever in print in America so maybe it was just an import, are both rare imports and expensive, so I'm sure most people who consider themselves big fans probably haven't heard either!

Here's the actual timeline, interestingly enough:

Jody's 1987 debut is very similar to Control (1986). I love it, too. It's a superb dance album.

RN was released on August 25, 1989. Jody's second album, Larger Than Life, was released in March 1989. However, I don't think Janet was lifting from Jody for that one. There are some nice tracks on Larger Than Life, sure, but it really was a letdown after her debut. I still jam to "Real Love", "Friends", "Precious Love", and a few others. They tried so hard to emulate a Jam & Lewis production but everything winds up sounding basically the same. There are so few distinctive cuts on that record. You don't remember them like you do the songs from RN.

The thing about Jody's first two records is that they generally lack the production sophistication of Janet's records. They have really aged poorly, but Control and RN are pretty timeless.

But Affairs Of The Heart is her best album.

P.S. I think Cherrelle's High Priority is a better comparison for Jody Watley (1987) overall.

FUCKED UP THE DATE EDIT

I'm not sure where you got the release date for Larger than Life from, but it's wrong. If I'm not mistaken, it came out in March 1989. If not then, in spring of that year for sure, because Friends was the second single from that album, and it was on radio and MTV that summer.

I like Jody Watley quite a bit (her first 3 albums anyway), however, I don't see the connection to Janet. They were both popular dance/R&B performers, but I have never ever thought of Janet's music once while listening to Jody. I think their sounds were entirely different. Both dance oriented, yes, but not similar.

Yes, Amazon.com fucked up the release date (just checked it on a Jody site). Sorry!

However, I still don't think RN lifted anything from it.

Well, I just did a google search after posting and there are a BUNCH of sites that list it with various dates, through October 1990. Thanks for checking!
thumbs up!

Yes, Jody Watley was wonderful. I commend her for choosing someone like Andre Cymone to produce her. Her second album was good but her first album was GREAT. I really like the fact that for her first album, she chose to do a hard ass funk album that could compete with any male out there and not put her in the classification of a ballad singer, which is what was going on strong in R&B back then.

She succumbed to ballad overdose in the 90's, though. Too bad.

I agree. Ballads weren't her strong point, and she went overboard on them.

LOVE MISS WATLEY!!!!
I was looking for a thread I posted about a year ago about meeting her after a show; but of course the site has it's glitches. rolleyes Love the "Flower", "Saturday Night Experience", "Midnight Lounge", all brilliant and underrated albums. Can't choose a favourite. I don't know about the Janet comparison...but I do remember her being called the 'blac' Madonna. I think her style was closer to Madonna's than anyone else's. Just watch her video for "Some Kind Of Lover". I was so excited when I got to meet her. She was lovely. And signed my "Flower" cd and "Midnight Lounge". She was actually shocked that I had a copy of "Flower" lol I wish they could get a complete video collection released on dvd though. At the end of the liner notes for "Flower" it reads:

"p.p.s. To Maxwell, I adore you. Can't get enough.... eek

hmmm You think it's the same MAXWELL. Heard that it was. shrug

Anyway..what else to say but... "Hasta La Vista Baby" wink
