To other, more respectable IDM artists. Try Autechre instead - also on Warp by the way.

I like the video too. I never had a chance to see it on tv (go figure). But I did download it a while back and watched it....pretty cool.

No, not better, but pretty good... Try Squarepusher too...
For Aphex Twin releases find "I Care Because You Do", Mike & Rich's "Expert Knob Twiddlers", "Richard D. James" album, "Drukqs", the "Windowlicker" singles and his remix albums ("26 Mixes For Cash"... and if you're really desperate "Aphex Twin's Classics" but it's better, though harder, to find the individual single releases with more amazing remixes...)
Later go for "Caustic Window" (a remix compliation) and "Polygon Window" (Surfing The Sine Waves) and the likes or find his AFX releases ("Analogue Bubblebath" Volumes) and his Joyrex EP releases and his various spin-off releases like "Men 2" and the likes or "Universal Indicator"...
And if you're into ambient stuff check out his "Selected Ambient Works Vol 1 & 2"...
This is just the tip of the iceberg, but a nice place to start off...
Try to catch him live sometime, you'll have a blast and laugh your ass off...

I'll have to second Neversin on "I Care Because You Do" and especially the "Richard D. James" album. The latter is one of the most gorgeous pieces of technology you're likely to hear. Songs 1-4 alone will leave you breathless.

Windowlicker is a classic, but fuck Aphex. Just get all of Squarepusher's stuff and you'll be ok.

Neversin pretty much summed it up. Some other folks to check out among Squarepusher and Autechre are: Mu-ziq, Telefon Tel Aviv and Amon Tobin.

I will say " Selected ambient works vol.1" is awesome! There are also some nice things happening on Vol. 2.

Aphex is such a bastard, because most of his good stuff is released under pseudonyms and white labels. He gives the record labels his scraps. lol

I'd like to add Venetian Snares to that list...
And maybe Múm, Manitoba and Boards Of Canada if you're into slower/dreamier stuff...

Actually fuck all this kiddie stuff that has been mentioned here and go straight to the link I am providing in my signature. Listen to the tidbits there and order a couple of CDs.

I am trying to save you a lot of time with this piece of info, because this is the stuff you will gravitate towards someday anyway. At least you should. wink

See - you don't want to feel ashamed for owning a shelf full of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher records when that day hits. Believe me, I've gone through the same.

I think most people who listen to Aphex Twin already listen to the Ant-Zen Label...
And IMO Aphex Twin is far better...

I have never met a person who listens to Aphex Twin and who would even have heard of ant-zen. In real life that is. Web is a different area altogether.

You're talking about the record label right? or a band?
If a band, then I've never heard of 'em...

Just the label. There is no such band.

But we are talking about two different markets here, Warp being a commercial label with a large distribution and even - gosh - BARCODES on their releases. Not to mention many Warp artists have gotten even videos on airplay (well at least some). ant-zen is far more obscure, and usually you can't find their records from retail stores unless they are specialist ones. Also Warp is for IDM, ant-zen concentrates mostly on contemporary rhythmic-based industrial. Two interlocking genres anyway.

It's a question of preference of course what branch you favour. On my own behalf, the smaller labels put out the most uncompromising music.

Yes, I am part of the ant-zen "street team". I have to confess, this is all part of the same promotional effort. So if you have ever walked around Helsinki and spotted strange stickers with a silhouette of an ant on them they're most likely glued there by me. smile

That's pretty cool, I've seen those stickers around in Hamburg in Germany, that was the first time I saw Ant-Zen mentioned outside of the internet...

Richard D James is a great artist - lucky enough 2 see him in a small dance tent at a festival in 95 with 4 or 5 lifesize day-glo teddy bears emblazoned with his malevolant smiling face - was awesome, and sounded superb!

I'd say hunt down the track 'Bucephalus Bouncing Ball' - that's great, and really shows just how clever he can be - nutter! lol

Loved the videos 4 'Come 2 Daddy' and 'Windowlicker' (hilarious - got a promo calendar somewhere, ill see if I can hunt it down and scan some of the images 4 later...) but my fave video of his has 2 be Drukqs

Man, that's some freaky-assed shit right there, even 4 him!
omg

music thumbs up!

That sounds like a blast... Last time I've seen him was with Squarepusher and two bald midgets dancing with them... Fucking hilarious!
Check out the "Donkey Rhubarb" vid for more of those freaky teddy bears...

Maybe also check out 'Godspeed You Black Emperor!' and the great, late Arthur Russell too... this guy was way ahead of his time.

Not 4 everybody these guys, but no doubting their genius.

It's funny though that Venetian Snares got mentioned. I've always regarded that guy as sort of "the even more fucked up little brother of Aphex Twin", someone who's sniffed an extra gallon of glue . Hell he even looks like that.
