Boy, now that's another thread altogether. But check out Madvillainy and The Grind Date before writing off hip-hop altogether.

and the new mos def too!

I'm sure there must be some good hip-hop out there that doesn't get played to death on BET. But, most of the shit I see on BET, is just that - SHIT!! The latest from Snoop Dog barf is another case in point. He is disgusting and I can't stand to look at him or hear him rap. I guess it's similar to the world of pop music where most of it is pure shit and a very small amount is quite good. I used to like to fip over to BET and watch the rap, hip-hop, r&b, but lately it's just a joke. It's the same old story over and over again. The dance sequences are so hilarious I can't possibly take any of those dancers seriously. I am certainly not an aficionado on rap or hip-hop, but I know pathetic when I see it!! It needs to be rescued by someone, that's for sure.

You hit it. You can't rely on BET for truly alternative videos/programming anymore. They all play the same Hip-Pop. I'd suggest you Google De La, Mos Def, Madlib, etc. to find their recent stuff. Better yet, check out Stones Throw Records' website, which jerseykrs hipped me to earlier this year.

The real hip-hop is drowned out by radio, video, etc. In some ways it's more underground than ever.

Music in general is tired. Then again, maybe it's more of a reflection of me. I'm of the opinion that if you can categorize it, it's probably not much more than good background music. Labels like "R&B" are only used to sell music to a certain demographic. It says nothing about the music itself. I like artists like Prince and Ani Difranco because their music is hard to pigeon-hole like that.
