Anyone down with Yoko?

I got into her music by accident. I bought the double fantasy cd a few years ago not knowing that she sang every other song and I ended up liking her stuff more than John Lennon's, although I love his music too. I just love the avant garde aspect of her music. She really is in a class by herself. Who else can do what she does?

To be totally honest I've never heard any of her work boxed I would like to, tho, one day...I think it would be interesting

I watched a really good documentary that was on TV last night about 1969 and how they did the famous bed-ins for peace...it was really interesting!!

No. Have you heard the Rolling Stone Circus album. What was John thinking? If you look closely at the footage, Eric is laughing and Keith is just plain drunk.

What's cool about her is that she does her own thing and doesn't seem to care what people think. Yes, her stuff is a little kooky but she's great. Some of her stuff reminds me a little of grace Jones. You should check out her "blueprint for a sunrise" CD!

The Rising album is freakin' phenomenal, and anyone who doesn't think so either hasn't heard it or else has no freakin' soul. To think that a woman and her son made such a great album is really, really sweet to me. And the Rising Mixes EP is fantastic, with tracks remixed by Mike D., Ween, Tricky, Cibo Matto and Thurston Moore. thumbs up!

For the record, I do think her stuff is an aquired taste. you just have to be open minded enough to give it a listen.

I like to believe that I am open minded... there are just somethings that I cannot process, ie; Zappa, nu-metal, goth, and solitare.

not even close. in fact, i'd rather have my head crammed full of frozen peas than have to suffer through anything by Yoko Ono again. so if I ever come to Chicago, make sure if you've got some Yoko spinning, that you've got a bag of peas handy so I'll have something to do in another room lol

I've spent hundreds of dollars on Yoko's music. She rocks! I have Plastic Ono Band, Approx. Infinite Universe, Double Fantasy, Milk & Honey, Season of Glass, the Walking on Thin Ice 7", It's Alright (five copies neutral), Starpeace, Rising, Rising: The Mixes EP, and Blueprint For A Sunrise. biggrin

I actually wrote to her for her 71st birthday. She sent me back a postcard with a little blue patch on it, reading "A Piece of Sky -- Let's all come together in ten years and put the sky back together again". She signed it "love, yoko" on the back. It's among my most treasured possessions.

No offense, but I don't get it. She has the singularly worst voice I've ever heard from a human being, and her songs are pretentious crap.

yoko has had the unenviable credit for breaking up the beatles and a lot of beatlemaniacs are yet to get over hating her for that.nevertheless, i think she brought out the intellectual debt that was locked within john.
john and yoko union,to my mind,is without a doubt the most beautiful and ethereally reverenced collaboration that was snatched abruptly and a time the world hungered the most for it!
do i dig yoko?-i do with all my heart!

Yoko didn't break up the Beatles. I don't fault her for that. I fault her for trying to sing when her voice sounds like a cat trapped in a blender.

Yoko is an incredible artist, and is criminally undervalued in the music industry. She has consistently released interesting and top-notch material since the early 70’s. Yes, it might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have value. There are several stellar albums in her catalogue, and some tremendously good songs including:

Walking on Thin Ice
You’re the One
She Gets Down on Her Knees
Turned the Corner
Death of Samantha
Open Your Box
Ask the Dragon
Hell in Paradise
Approximately Infinite Universe
Yang Yang
Coffin Car
Peter the Dealer

One of the most painfully anguished and emotional tracks in all of rock/pop music has to be Yoko’s “I Don’t Know Why” written right after the death of John Lennon. It is simply stunning.

If you have never checked out Yoko, do yourself a favor and don’t give into your expectations and pre-conceived notions. Give her a chance with an open mind, and you will be amazed.

1. Yoko was a unknown "performance artist" when she met John, and her worldliness and exotic look put the final nail in his forced marriage to his wife.

2. She didn't break up the Beatles; however, she was a pain in the ass girlfriend that John forced the others to deal with 'cause he was so whacked out on heroin and pussy.

3. The most creative thing she has done in her life is to manage the money John earned to make more money. Oh, and to be famous for being famous (a la Paris Hilton).

4. She's just another bloated tick feeding off the creativity of others.

As a visual artist, she's awesome, but as a performance artist, she has no talent. She probably never wanted to sing or anything before she hooked up with John anyway.

i strongly disagree with that - she has a great deal of talent. Yoko has an incredible body of work. Would she get attention if not for John? Not likely. Does that mean she has no talent? Of course not. Lots of amazing artists are overlooked.

"Starpeace", because of the sheer positive glow that radiates from the thing. But that's somewhat of a personal guilty pleasure.
