Sir Elton John launched a vitriolic attack on Madonna today, accusing her of cheating fans by miming on stage.
The star targeted the Queen of Pop in his latest public outburst.
Attending the Q Awards to pick up a prize for his songwriting, Sir Elton was incensed to find Madonna had been nominated for best live act.
Taking to the stage, Sir Elton blasted: 'Madonna - best f**ing live act? F*** off. Since when has lip-synching been live? Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay £75 to see them should be shot.'
He ended his rant by saying: 'That's me off her f***ing Christmas card list but do I give a toss? No.'
Madonna did not win the award - that honour went to British band Muse.
She was nominated for her Re-Invention tour. The show attracted criticism in some quarters because tickets were so expensive.
Today's outburst at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Central London came after Sir Elton hit the headlines last month by branding Taiwanese photographers 'rude, vile pigs' in an airport bust-up.

Funnily enough Elton has a new album out soon.

I think it is a very smart practice Esther has on not attacking other singers/artists.

I think Mariah & Janet may disagree with you here
how can Madonna release a statement saying she doesn't diss other artists?
Has she forgotten her Jealous outburst against Mariah and Janet?
it's karma
and anyway it's Madonna!! she's not even a real singer! or respected artist

She' just basically a "menopausal Britney" really?
[Edited 10/5/04 3:13am]

Did Elton himself write this post?

I think the comment should have read "Madonna doesn't rag on other people...anymore." lol I don't recall Madonna ever saying anything negative about Janet Jackson. Janet sorta did about Madonna, but even that was minor at worst (something to the effect of "If you can't say something nice, don't say it at all"). The exchanges between Madonna and Mariah - regardless of their nature - were hysterical.

Really? I can't exactly speak on her live performances since I've only seen her twice. But to me, on record she sounds oodles better from project to project. She seems to hit a new vocal plateau every few years or so. Her voice got noticeably better with True Blue, then again for Like A Prayer. The next major difference was Something To Remember/Evita, and then again for Ray of Light. I guess cuz Mirwais has urged her to do a lot of dry mixes on the last two albums, we hear a lot more of the quirks and snaps in her voice than before. I think it's charming though.

Well, I certainly think that the production of her albums has become more sophisticated over the past decade or so, but as we all know, a good studio guru can make ANYone sound great. I mean, you don't really think Madge's voice is hitting that high note in "Ray of Light", do you? Color me cynical, but I'm sure that was some studio wizardry right there.

she hit it live on Oprah. it took her 2 takes, but she hit it.

So does Madonna. lol

Glad you said it CB and I agree with you. She's bored the hell out of me for years and I think she's the phoniest entertainer out there today. Elton may be having one of his famous tantrums, but he speaks the truth.

lol

I'm not a big fan of Madonna but I always like to know what she's up to. I actually thought American Life was okay. Not a great album but certainly better than Music. I just wish she would focus more on writing a decent tune rather than pissing about with producers who dress up her work with clicks, whirrs, beeps and other distracting gimmicks. wink

i understand what you mean but why is it a gimmick when madonna does it but not a gimmick when tricky, bjork, u2, radiohead or whoever does it?

interestingly, she wasn't actually lip-synching on this tour, aside from a few backing tapes with the vocal effects on them.

unlike when i saw Elton John in 1999, supposedly just him and his piano, when there were all sorts of background music tapes playing throughout. synths, horns, hell even drums.

anyway, i like Elton a lot, but it's apparent that he must have a new album on the way for him to start throwing public tantrums again, and returning to ripping other celebrities new assholes. it's just par for the course...

really, i wish he'd go back on drugs. he was a lot more rational back then.

Though I agree that it's not mature for anyone to diss another artist in public, I can understand where Eltie is coming from. I've gone on forums and talked about lipsyncing and how it's not artistic to me. I mean Hillary Duff can't sing. She's the anti-christ. She NEVER sings live. Now look at Madonna, who's had a tremendous career and never lipsynced at the start of her career. Now she's on the same level as Hillary Duff. Sad.

If I may deconstruct Madonna just a bit, Madonna has always been a mainstay in the gay community, ever since her first record hit the airwaves and everyone thought she was black. It's hard to say if Madonna's fashion sense had much affect on little gay boys at that stage.

When it comes to icon-dom, it's hard to pinpoint what makes one and what doesn't. What is true is that you know one when you see one. Madonna was pretty much born one.

The problem with icon-dom is the tendency for an act to digress into camp, therefore diminishing their artistic merit. Madonna has digressed into camp many a time. It's almost safe to say that her "coolness" factor has suffered because of it. One critic argued that once an artist becomes a gay icon it's the kiss of death in terms of coolness. They also mentioned Marilyn Monroe and George Michael as two of the stars who have remained unscathed after becoming gay icons.

Please. many thought Madonna was black when she first came out. I'm not saying she's the most soulful thing out there, but she was getting a lot of radio play and no one knew who she was. Certainly you know SOMEONE who thought she was black when they first heard "Holiday"?
