Well, do you want avante garde or do you want straight ahead. Listening to Sun Ra is like learning how to swim, you don't want to jump into the deep end first. lol shake

Yeah, the anthology that was released on evidence is pretty tight, but it only represents some of his earliest work and are actually singles.

if you're looking for some of his more mainstream stuff, I would say check these out.

Holiday for Soul Dance

Blue Delight

There's another release on the A&M label I couldn't find an Image for, entitled Purple Night That's pretty chill. Don cherry's on there with his pocket trumpet doing some nice things.

Now if you want to take a walk on the wild side, I'd reccomend these: giggle

Nuclear War

Space is the Place

Outerspace Employment Agency

Concert For The Comet Kohoutek

Damn man, Im'ma stop here. lol besides this is a Frank Zappa thread. Most of these titles you can hear samples of at Amazon.com nod

Sun Ra is not jumping in at the deep end. If you can't get to his music, then you have no taste as far as I'm concerned! (You should smoke a spliff if the content is too head swirling at first). This thread rocks.

Zappa is God. Very unique style of playing. Highly underrated (I saw a guitar magazine listing of the best players and they ranked The Edge miles above Zappa!? Needless to say Prince wsn't even included).

Dumb All Over is one of my favorite songs! Just check out how relevant this is over 20 years later...

Whoever we are, wherever we’re from
We shoulda noticed by now, our behavior is dumb
And if our chances expect to improve
It’s gonna take a lot more, than trying to remove the other race
Or the other whatever, from the face
Of the planet altogether

They call it THE EARTH, which is a dumb kinda name
But they named it right, ‘cause we behave the same...
We are dumb all over
Dumb all over, yes we are
Dumb all over, near an’ far
Dumb all over, black an’ white
People, we is not wrapped tight

Nerds on the left, nerds on the right
Religious fanatics on the air every night
Saying the Bible tells the story
Makes the details sound real gory
About what to do if the geeks over there
Don’t believe in the book we got over here

You can’t run a race without no feet
An’ pretty soon there won’t be no street
For dummies to jog on or doggies to dog on
Religious fanatics can make it be all gone
It won’t blow up An’ disappear
It’ll just look ugly for a thousand years...

You can’t run a country by a book of religion
Not by a heap or a lump or a smidgen
Of foolish rules of ancient date
Designed to make you all feel great
While you fold, spindle and mutilate
Those unbelievers from a neighboring state

TO ARMS! TO ARMS! Hooray! That’s great
Two legs ain’t bad unless there’s a crate
They ship the parts to mama in
For souvenirs: two ears - Get Down!
Not his, not hers, but what the hey?
The Good Book says: “It’s gotta be that way!”
But their book says: “REVENGE THE CRUSADES!!!!...”

With whips an’ chains an’ hand grenades...”
TWO ARMS? TWO ARMS? Have another and another
My God says: “There ain’t no other!”
Our God says: “It’s all okay!”
My God says: “This is the way!”
It says in the book: “Burn and destroy…..”
An’ repent, an’ redeem, an’ revenge, an’ deploy
An’ rumble thee forth to the land of the unbelieving scum on the other side
Cause they don’t go for what’s in the Book
An’ that makes ‘em BAD
So All, verily we must choppeth them up
Or stompeth them down
Or rent a nice French bomb
Ssssss…….. to poof them out of existence
While leaving their real estate just where we need it
To use again for temples in which to praise OUR GOD
“Cause He can really take care of business!”

And when His humble TV servant
With white hair and a brown suit
And maybe a blond wife who takes phone calls
Tells us it’s okay to do this stuff, then we’re supposed do it
‘Cause if we don’t do it, we ain’t gwine up to hebbin!
(Depending on which book you’re using at the time...
Can’t use theirs... it’s all lies..... Gotta use mine... Ain’t that right?
That’s what they say -- Every night... Every day...
Listen, we can’t really be dumb, if we’re just following God’s Orders
After all, He wrote this book here an’ in the Book He says:
“He made us all to be just like Him,”
So... If we’re dumb... Then God is dumb...
An’ maybe even a little bit ugly on the side

DUMB ALL OVER – a little ugly on the side
DUMB ALL OVER – a little ugly on the side
DUMB ALL OVER – a little ugly on the side

Gee wizz psykosoul what a Question! Sorry, it's just that Frank's got soo many albums, probably more than any other Artist, or close 2 it. hmmm

I'd Recommend Getting a copy of "Zoot Allures", as it's got a great cross section of his Styles: Comic, Bitchin' guitar, Freaky stuff , ( plus i love it ! ) It's also a more 'comercial' easy to listen 2 type of an album. Not comercial in a bad sense, but well polished selection, for quick comprehension of the Man and his work.

To counter balance you could also get "Billy the Mountain", a comedic romp with The guy's from "The turtles", who did 'Eleanor' & 'Happy together'; "Flo & eddy" (Ainsley Dunbar and what's his name? )

I also recommend "LIve at the Filmore", early 70's , one of the last concerts at the Filmore East. An absolute classic ! (A white Album) . So there it is , Happy listening.....

One of my favourite Zappa song's is "The Muffin Man", not sure of the Album as i have it on a best of set. One of the greatest guitar solo's i've heard, in my opinion.

Go For It ! ! ! peace
~PClinuxOS~ yes I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... I drop in from time to time, ... thumbs up!

++++

the muffin man was first premiered on the 1975 album, "bongo fury". it can also be heard on "you can't do that on stage anymore volume 6", "strictly commercial (a best of album)", and "fz:oz (a 2 disc live set from australia 1976)"

as for zoot allures, it has one of the best instrumental/guitar compositions of the zappa catalog, "black napkins".

Live at the Filmore is an incredible album! Though, I don't know if I'd start there. hmmm

Zoot Allures is a nice introduction to Frank, I'd pay a hundred bucks just to hear "Black Napkins", alone. lol

YES!!! Muffin Man is an incredible song! That guitar solo leaves me breathless everytime I hear it. I don't know if the version you have is from "Bongo Fury" but 80% of the album is a delight, a really good time! nod

if you can, check out the versions of black napkins from:
halloween 1975 late show
paris february 3, 1977

the halloween 1975 late show starts with fz reciting an early version of some of the lyrics that end up in the song packard goose (not released until 5 years later on joe's garage volume 2), then great standard work up of black napkins.
the paris 1977 version is a long extravaganza, 13 minutes long with great eddie jobson violin solo, it also cantains a 2-3 minute break, that i think is just breathtakingly beautiful. if you listen to shut up'n play yer guitar to a song entitled pink napkins, that "song" is that break in black napkins from the winter 1977 show from the london show a few weeks later.
