i wont say "greatest" but definately a record ahead of its time, this was the 3rd record released on the "Tommy Boy" Label the 1st one was "jazzy sensation" by the Jazzy 5 second one was a record ripped from "mama used to say" called "when Junior wants to play"

Definitely helped in the early legitimization of hip hop. I wouldn't say it was the *best* song ever made because it isn't entirely original -- it does sample Kraftwerk. But for its energy and longevity, I will say it's a classic.

In my opinion this songs was definitely a head of its time and a true classic. I don't think I will ever get sick of hearing it. That, a long with super freak!

It's much better as Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express, but to be serious now, I still love this jam. It hit a just the right time in 1981, and since I could never breakdance, I at least pretended to be cool buy blasting it way too loud on my Fisher Ghetto Blaster. Afrika Bam is a godfather in hip hop, that will never chnage, I give him his respect. This post has been modified from its original thought. It has been formatted to fit into the space and run in the time allotted.

THE baddest futuristic funky jam ever made. I especially love the nine minute instrumental. The explosions, the electronic voice.....rock, rock, to the Planet Rock, don't stop.....dammitt!
That record came out the summer before my sophomore year in high school. Everyone was jamming futuristic style back then. Prince made "1999", The Jonzun Crew made "Pack Jam", Warp 9 made "Nunk", Orbit made "The Beat Goes On". "Planet Rock" was the first record I can remember starting that trend. 1982 was a hell of a year. I take that back, the first record I can remember like that was "I'm Ready" by Kano in 1980.....anyway, 1982 was still a hell of a year. [Edited 9/30/04 22:29pm] Andy is a four letter word.

Planet Rock is one of the best Hip Hop jams ever! Yes, much thanks to 'Kraftwerk's' "Trans Europe Express" for the sample A.B. & S.S.F. used.(it's not exactly the same song) The Planet Rock version, though, has been one of the most sampled songs ever! Especially a lot of 'high Energy' music. Sounds like some of them just sang right over the 'Planet Rock' track!! [Edited 10/1/04 8:27am]

Even if the drums are based on Kraftwerk "Numbers", every act who bought an 808 tried to emulate the "Planet Rock" beat, not Kraftwerk's. I think Bambaataa's song is responsible for Miami bass and fast beats like that.
Total hip-hop classic. Right up there with "The Message" IMHO. Big props to Kraftwerk though. They had a huge hand in presenting electronic music to hip-hop's playlist. See: "Rockin' It" Fearless Four.
