The Complexity of George Michael's Music Hello all. Just wanting to see who agrees with me. I've been listening to the new George Michael album "Patience" now for several months (I really am digging this album). Anyway, has anybody ever noticed just how complex some of his songs are. George has always said that he takes pop music seriously, which if you listen you can tell the time, effort and craft he puts into each song. A litmus test to see the complexity would be to try singing these songs. George is an excellent vocalist as well, but you can definitely see that he takes care in composing, arranging and producing. The man is obviously very talented.
Just some observations, please let me know what you all think.

I don't have the new cd either. The problem i had when listening to the cd is that it's a little TOO heavy on the meloncholy ballads. Now George Michael can make a beautiful ballad with the best of them, but there's a difference between that and moody, meloncholy ones. I LOVE "You Will Be Loved" which I have on his Greatest Hits cd (Which everyone should own) but I couldn't handle a whole albums worth of them.
But I concure, George is one of the most talented artists out there.

Just some observations, please let me know what you all think. I agree. I have noticed that all of the songs esp the slower ones get more complex thoughout the song. Many have grown on me because of this. Patience I think is his best..IMO Christian Zombie Vampires

But I concure, George is one of the most talented artists out there. I think the new cd has a nice balance. Now 'Older' was slow and depressing. The new one has a nice mix of introspective slow songs, and sexier high energy dance tracks. I don't find the album heavy or melancholy at all.

One of my favorite songs of his is "Spinning The Wheel".
I love the way it's put together and the lyrics are great. Five o’clock in the morning You ain’t home I can’t help thinking that’s strange Baby I just want you to know I won’t go through it again Yes, those clouds are closing in Chorus And I will not accept this as a part of my life I will not live in fear of what may be And the lessons I have learned... I would rather be alone then watch you Spinning that wheel for me + You’ve got a thing about danger Ain’t you getting what you want from me You’ve got a thing about strangers Baby that’s what we used to be You’ve got a thing about danger baby I guess the hungry just can’t see One of these days You’re gonna bring some home to me Six o’clock in the morning you ain’t phoned I can’t help thinking that’s strange It seems that everybody takes Their chances These days Oh yeah, we’re standing in the rain Chorus How can you love me When you are playing with my life You say give me time and I’ll do better I swear Give me time and I’ll lead you back to despair And I don’t want to go back there

I love George and all of his music. The new cd is very good. I may not have the correct title, but I love the song "my mother had a brother". Very complex and moving. George is one of the greatest singer/songwriters IMHO!

Listening to Patience I felt the same way. I think his creativity gets overlooked alot (at least in America). At times I skip a few tracks because the lyrics just bring me down but at the same time I’m drawn to them because of the story they convey. I force myself to listen to My Mother Had A Brother and sometimes it’s simply the beauty of his voice that makes me tear up. Praying For Time falls into this category also and ditto on Spinning the Wheel. He has one of the purest voices out there. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

It sounded like he actually spent all that time working on the album. It sounds like he wrote the songs, then sang and sang, figuring out where the best places were to experiment with the melody. Most times, studio albums that sound like that come from bands' first major-label albums, when they've been playing the songs live for years and have all the superfluous hoo-has and ad-libbed grunts perfectly placed. The last verse of "Precious Box" demonstrates this - it's totally a different arrangement than the others, but is sung over the same basic structure. Combined with the production, Patience is the most complex pop album I've ever heard. When the sunlight strikes raindrops in the air, they act as a prism and form a rainbow. The rainbow is a division of white light into many beautiful colors. Regardless of the day, I'm glad you were born.
