Curtis Mayfield's Curtis: Under Appreciated? Everyon raves and raves about "What's Going On" as the greatest soul album of all time, yet Curtis preceeded it and, in my humble opinion, is the superior album. Anyone else have any thoughts?

It's one of the best albums ever. "If There's A Hell Below" is one of the best songs of all time! Yeah, not only that album, but Curtis the artist is underrated. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

But seriously, anyone out there who's so enamoured with Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder (not to say that they aren't great), look into this man's music. I'm not saying he's better, I just don't think he's gotten as much attention.

i think it's his best work. 'the other side of town', 'the makings of you', and 'we people who are darker than blue' are three of the best songs you'll ever hear!!!
when speak of marvin and stevie, you GOT to mention curtis AND donny hathaway. if curtis is underappreciated then donny is altogether forgotten. donny's 'live' cd, 'extension of a man' and 'everything is everything' cds are soul classics.

Just went to an online retailer to check out some tracks from this CD and its on the way to me. Thanks for the reminder of a great, late artist.

I wouldn't rate it above "What's Going On", but it isn't really that far behind. It is a surprisingly underrated album (as are "Roots" and "Curtis Live"), although, for me, "Superfly" remains his masterpiece. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

What a genius he was.
Good thread - I do definately feel he is under appreciated. From '68 (Young Mods Forgotten Story LP) to '74 (Got To Find A Way), he didnt record a duff track in the whole period. Even his later 70's albums still contained 2 or 3 gems within. For me, he has written more 'goose bump' songs than anybody else. His songwriting with the Impressions (especially the 'This Is My Country' & 'Young Mods Forgotten Story' albums ') just before he went solo, are total genius & a man at the height of his powers. He is definately RIGHT up there in the TOP 10 of all time alongside these guys (in no particular order - how can you separate them anyway!!) : James Brown Sly Stone Norman Whitfield Stevie Wonder Marvin Gaye Donny Hathaway Barry White Prince George Clinton Without the guys from the list above, where would us 'proper' music lovers be??!!!!! Curtis even made a painstaking comeback album in '96 when he was paralysed & it was tremendous . Everyone on this thread should own 'New World Order' & know the story behind how difficult it was for him to make the album. What a guy The Funk, the whole funk & nothin' but the funk, ya dig?!

"Curtis" was selected as the 2# best-ever soul album by the B&S -magazine when they compiled such a list.
It really is such an exquisite album. There isn't anything that sounds like it, even compared to Curtis' other output there's something otherworldly unique about the sound and mood of this record - in my opinion.
