Someone orged me, asking me if I actually looked like Dez. No, not at all. Sorry. I just dressed like Dez/Prince when I was in school. Which was an updated Hendrix look, circa 67, anyways. The trench coats that Prince and Dez wore was a take off of Hendrix's army coat. The summer before my senior year in high school, I had totally grown out my Jessie curl and was sporting the Jimi hairdo circa late 66, early 67, but much longer and wilder. This is evident at the Purple Rain premire outside of Mann's Chinese. I was wearing the navy trench w/studs, ruffled white shirt and white headband which was pure Hendrix, but was mistaken for the Prince/Dez look. Oh well, what can you do?

Hell yeah player! They were some friends of mine at my high school and at other schools like Fairfax where they had "The Time ' groups. It was cool as hell. They were sporting Stacey Adams and the whole 9!. We were the Prince clones and they were The Time clones. We all went to Prince concerts together. Yeah, that shit was fun.

I think hip-hop styles have influenced me somewhat. Not to the extreme, but I remember a time when I was wearing fat laces and parachute pants in the 1980's, and baggy pants, skullies, oversize t-shirts, and fitted hats in the 90's. I still rock an occasional jersey or two but I'm getting too old to get "gully" with it.

I looked everywhere for a peach tie and shirt to wear with my black suit, because I dig those colors together. I wonder why.

Prince and associates definitely influenced how I dressed back in the 80s when I was in my middle/late teens.

Anything lace, ruffled, purple, or Prince-inspired I would wear, including jewelry such as hoop earrings and crucifix pendants, and lots of rhinestones and brooches and stuff with dangly chains. Also I tried to do my hair like Prince and Co: you know - parted on the side, curly, and BIG. lol

Before I got into Prince I was obsessed with Michael Jackson so I'd gotten a leather jacket similiar to his Thriller one and had a few pairs of highwater black pants which I'd wear with white socks disbelief and black penny loafers. I also bought a few bow ties of various colors because I'd seen him wear those with sweatshirts a few times. Oh and I also bought a pink Oxford shirt to wear with my MJ pants/shoes so as to copy his look in the 'Billie Jean' video. lol lol

I never got into the Madonna wannabe look except for those black rubber bracelets.

I also had a lot of neon clothes like Wham made popular.

Jimi Hendrix

Sly and the Family Stone

Arthur Lee

In terms of the black community, Jimi Hendrix, Sly & the Family Stone and to a lesser degree Arthur Lee (only because he was less visible in the 'hood) made it okay for some blacks to not be as restrictive in their modes of dress.

When The Temptations broke out their "Hendrix starter kits" during their "psychedelic soul" period the cat was totally out of the bag.
