There's a Riot Going On Appreciation Thread Who else thinks this album is just damn creepy. It's hazy, druggy, languid, and alluring all at the same time

I don't think it's creepy. I think it's a masterpiece - dark and druggy, yes, but also uplifting. I also think of the baboon and pitbull story. [Edited 9/23/04 23:01pm] There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

I love listening 2 this album in headphones.
That's a trip & a half! Sly Stone's vocals on this album is so soulful it's scary. Just take a listen 2 "Jus like a baby","Poet" & "Time". /peace Manki

Hot damn, if that ain't the funkiest shit I've ever heard!!!!! Prince isn't so original after all. But indeed, "Riot" is a very dark album. Scary, yet funky! NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

[Edited 9/23/04 23:01pm] I didn't say it wasn't a masterpiece, but I do think it's quite creepy. As others have said, it's "seductive despair and that's the scariest thing about it"

I think this is a very interesting album. It is funky and enjoyable, but in a very weird and claustraphobic way.It certainly isn't perfect and drugs and paranoia are felt in teh vibration of every bass lick, but I love teh cd.And it really helped me realize how much Prince is Sly.Everyone used to always say it was Little Richard,or Jimi,or James, which it is,but moreso than anyone,Prince is Sly Stone.Listen to these songs and tell me you hear "if i was your girlfriend","strange relationship" and so many.Look at Prince's pimp look and the big curly hair.He also had a multi-racial band that brought rabid fans from white and rock to black and funk angles.Prince and the Revolution are Sly and the Family Stone.
Has anyone seen the movie "huey p newton" ? I have watched it twice and was riveted.I am not sure, but I thought of Sly and the Family Stone the whole time I watched the movie.Maybe itw as because of the era. "I'm a pig..so,magic elixir I swill"

I think it's one of Sly's best albums. Bobby Womack plays on it but is uncredited. It shows where Sly was at the time coming off of his best album, Stand. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Prince's "1999" album's darkest cuts "Something In The Water", "All The Critics Loves You", etc., is basically derived from "There's A Riot". I always thought that Sly's title was an answer to Marvin's question "What's Going On?" Uh, There's A Riot Goin' On, that's what's goin' on! "I'm not Regan" SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I can't understand why this album isn't higher whenever they do classic album polls.
Why does crap like Nevermind or Dark Side Of The Moon always score so highly when this is definitely one of the top five albums ever made?

You're definitely right, I think prince resembles sly more than any other black rockstar. BTw, is the movie Huey p. Newton about the black panther leader? As a sidenote, what the hell has sly been up to? I know he made some albums after Fresh that didn't get very high sales or good reviews, and that he toured with P-Funk and collaborated with them on a couple songs, but is there anything significant in the works from him? I know he's probably dismissed as a hasbeen but one can't stop hoping that someone as supremely influential and talented like him can return to form.

From my understanding he's living as a drugged-out recluse in the Bay Area. It was , however, cool to see Rose performing in the gospel choir in that movie The Ladykillers with Tom Hanks.

Prince mixes different musical styles the way Sly used to. I never understood the Hendrix comparison. In a 1985 Rolling Stone Interview, Prince said his guitar style was more like Santana's instead of Jimi's. He felt people compared him to Hendrix because they were black.

Little Sister was awesome!!!! Sly's little sister, Vet, first cousin Elva "Tiny" Mouton and Mary McCreary were three of the funkiest background singers I've ever seen. "You're The One," "Somebody's Watching You" (the first track Sly recorded with the funk box used on There's A Riot...) and "Stanga" were just some of the tunes performed by this amazing trio. They were also awesome tambourine beaters!!! Some of these acts out today could learn a thing or two from studying them (ie. Beyonce a'la 2004 Grammys ) Check out this website on them. www.slyslilsis.com

What up everybody,
Ya gotta love this album for its as is, intimate, unrefined, raw inside look at the genius that is Sly Stone. My other fav seldom mentioned... "High In You" and "On the Right Track" not bad either. I think the man is outta commission, although I always like to hope that he'll show up on stage with Prince or George Clinton someday and shock everyone!!! (Wishful Thinkin') Big up Org

All I'm sayin' is, if the album itself is as lame as the cover..... After Small Talk, every Sly album was practically a miss. But I have some favorites on Heard Ya Missed Me. The title track, Nothing Less Than Happiness, Blessing In You and Everything In You are pretty good IMO.

I was blown away at the tambourine beating skills. It may sound silly, but those sisters showed how tambourines should be used to their fullest potential.
