I mean, yeah these are 2 of the greatest Alternative bands with deep, emotional lyrics and tragically beautiful soundscapes. But the Cure often is like a manic depressive: sometimes extremely happy, sometimes extremely miserable. But The Smiths are even more miserable than the Cure if you ask me. There's more depth and feeling in Moz's lyrics and vocals. Also, Moz is very ironic and witty in his songs too, which you do not see in Fatass Bob's lyrics often. Even onstage is different with both bands. The Smiths were full of rompin' stompin' energy with Moz (shirtless, jumping), while The Cure just stood there like shoegazers trying to get their songs over with. So with The Cure and The Smiths, there's 2 major differences here.....and yet they're somewhat similar. Pffftt! Aw, don't give me the hand, buddy. I'm just calling it as I see it. Fatass Bob? Well it ain't like I'm lying. I mean look at him. He's pushing some maximum density there. But really now, comparing The Cure to The Smiths is like apples and oranges. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

But really now, comparing The Cure to The Smiths is like apples and oranges. Yes, but not an entirely unrealistic pairing. Plus, their bickering from back in the day makes it even juicier. Very easy to take sides.

He played guitar for them on tour after their original guitarist abruptly quit in 1979. He then became their official guitarist for two albums from 1983-1984, but his input on those albums in terms of songwriting was minimal if not nonexsistent. Sioux and bassist Steve Severin are the real driving force behind the Banshees. Cure fans interested in finding a more equal collaboration with the Banshees should check out their side project called The Glove. They released one album in 1983. Smith sings lead vocals on maybe half the tracks. The Glove was a pretty decent album. Used to have it back in the day when I could afford imports. My fave track was Mr. Alphabet. Cool cover art too. I'll have 2 checkout 'The Glove'. (Probably got it collecting dust somewhere) Memories of so long ago seem almost like yesterday.Initially, or couple of years into their career, i liked 'The Cure' as an instrumental band. The influence of R."smiths" use of delay on his guitar was monumental, he forged the way 4 a lot of player's. Their later pop stuff doesn't turn me on that much . I've always treasured stuff like Killing an arab,(etc.) 10.15 saturday night, boy's dont cry. Smiths, built a beautiful lot of new wave pop songs; which i considered were exploring adolesence, and orchestral; with Morrissey's lyrics breathing the imagery of classic tongue in cheek British eccentricity.Marr's wonderful sunny music was a great counter balance. 1nce again, my Vote is 4 The Cure. But why not just enjoy both bands and have a pleasant evening listening to some great Music, throw on a selection of Blur while your at it Wish i had a functioning turntable to give these discs a spin Bad spelling Edit [Edited 10/2/04 8:12am] ~PClinuxOS~ I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... It just has to be THE CURE for I. The Smiths are a great band as well but they're a lot further down my favourite band list than The Cure. However, I've seen The Cure twice now and they seemed to disapoint me every time. Both times were at festivals in the UK, Glasto95 and Move 04, and you'd think they'd grab the oppertunity to really give a memerable performance. This is not to say I think they are rubbish live but their set list could've been better! On the bright side they did play "100 years!" at Move04... and I went crazy, no one had a clue what the song was!!

I'd have to say The Smiths simply because Morrissey's lyrics combined with Johnny Marr's guitar playing is unbeatable.
This thread almost makes me wanna start a Pulp vs. The Smiths thread... didn't Morrissey bad mouth Jarvis in a similar way he does with Robert Smith? I think he said Jarvis was a terrible singer and made other derogatory comments. His bitterness really makes me laugh sometimes. I think he's probably just jealous of Pulp's success in the 90's (same with The Cure in the 80's) and Jarvis' lyrical prowess. Not that he should be, but Pulp were amazing as well. Sorry for straying off topic there.

Try to see 'em when it's just them. And if you can't, try to get as close as possible. It makes a big difference.

I saw them in 1986 and remember the show was a bore and was sort of bummed about it afterward. It really, really sucks I never saw the Smiths.

for me, the cure hands down. i do like the smiths, but the cure's catalog, beats the hell out of the smith's on the whole. the cure's catalog has a lot more diversity, and robert smith's lyrics speak to me more than morrisey's.
and on a personal note, in 1986, i had 2nd row seats to see the smith's at the fox theater in atlanta, and they cancelled the tour, the night before they were to play atlanta because morrisey was "tired". so fuck 'em. i've seen the cure 5 times, never a disappointment. ------------------------------------------------

In the END, i've gotta say the two bands are uncomparable. The lyrics that Morrissey writes are poetry. The music Robert Smith writes is poetry. The two things are totally different, and both are Artist's of the highest order. ~PClinuxOS~ I've been here longer than I care to remember, ...
