Let the debate begin! my best friend is a Torres Strait Islander (from up at the northern tip of Australia just under PNG) so she's very dark...the "popular" culture with them all is to love R & B and rap, which is all good coz she does - but I've also, in the years I've known her, introduced Rock particularly to her and SHE LOVES IT!!! she came with me to see Kiss earlier this year in Sydney (it was her first ever concert) and she was SO stoked!! most of her family (cousins etc around our age) kinda think it's strange that she knows all this other music that seems very alien to them...it's just an eclectic taste!!! whatever gets you through the night as the legendary John Lennon once said she's a black chick who ROCKS!!!

People who care so much about what you listen to are obviously unhappy and living some kinda weird repressed existence where they have to critique an outgroup to feel special. Content yourself in knowing that you're above all that! Change it one more time..

Let the debate begin! There's nothing to debate.. its a stereotype.. you give in2 that.. then the world will ass fuck u. think beyond.

So far, I agree with all of the points that have been made by my fellow orgers. However, I don't know if I would condsider Kelis as rock especially after Milkshakes. Maybe I would consider Res as rock, Tina, Chaka, and definitely Joyce from Motherfinest rock female vocalist.
Dancerella, I am glad that you started this thread. [Edited 9/30/04 9:57am]

Hi hotlegs! I just wanted to bring it up as it was something that i've dealt with ever since I got into rock, which was a long time ago. So you don't consider kelis rock? I guess she's hard to put in a category which is good!

She may be too Pop but she definitely is on the right track. I saw her video for Boys and Girls and it kinda had some P influence going there with the instrumental. It will be interesting to see what direction her music will go into once she gets out of her teens.

period. Yes...music is music...but the more things change...the more they stay the same. It is definitely a stereotype...and I like ALL kinds of music. But it cracks me up when people are surprised to see people of color listen to more than just hip hop. Kinda reminds me of sports and how there aren't that many people of color in hockey.....if kids in the inner cities were exposed to more than just basketball and football...perhaps there would be more. Ok....I got carried away...sorry guys. I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.

I am glad that this thread got to fact of the matter. Hopefully, this thread has open some eyes.

As for your statement about the state of music today, you are right on. Some of the music that is in constant rotation on radio station sucks. I have found myself digging on alot of the stuff back in the day.

My high school experience was a little different than yours. People had an idea that I listen to music other than just rap/soul by the way I dressed and wore my hair. They knew that I was into all kinds of music b/c some of my hanging buddies were in rock and alternative bands. Also, they knew that I was vocalist and a dancer at the time.
I actually dress "different" too but people usually asume that i listen to rap & r n'b. it's just a stupid stereotype, i suppose. by the way, i'm also a dancer!

Let the debate begin! I'm white. But really, I don't give a fuck. Good music is good music, and I couldn't care less about your skin color. The reason why it is considered "odd" for you? Society is pathetic.

The only colors I associate with music is whether it's good or it's bad (not race but still a black and white perspective...with little grey).

Nobody who really loves music cares about the genre or the color of the musician.
But lots of people listen to what they think will make them cooler. To me, cool is being yourself and not following the herd. Check this song out at:

My husband, who is black, works in Detroit with 98% black people. He told me that even though he has worked at this place for 10 years, he has no friends. Some people actually harass him because he doesn't fit the stereotype of a black male. He doesn't wear Fubu and Sean Jean (never would), doesn't listen to rap, and mostly likes rock music and blues. Plus he's married to me (a white girl). A lot of the black people he works with call him a sell-out.
