OK, this is a hot topic but..... How come it's ok for white people to listen to rap but it's not ok for black people to listen to rock? As a black girl who listens to all kinds of music, including rock, I was considered very "odd" to people when I ttold them I didn't like rap and r & b.

Hell, David Bowie started out his career wanting to be Little Richard's sax player. And Jimi Hendrix....well, Jimi Hendrix. Nuff said. Music shouldn't be categorized by colors, other than the colors inspired by the music. Some stuff sounds blue, some sounds orange, some sounds like all kinds of colors. Those are the only colors that matter. God, that was hippie dippie.

Joyce Kennedy was(and still is) all the rage. If there's anybody who could get REEEEEAAL down & gritty other than Tina Turner & Chaka Khan, that somebody would be Joyce. Anxiety, lets not forget Ike Turner's Rocket 88 which was the 1st ROCK RECORD, Jackie Wilson and most importantly Chuck Berry. Good ol' Elvis woulda been a lost sperm if it weren't for those people. I don't think so. You gotta listen to what 'does it' for you... whatever that might be. Forget other peoples opinion. Like many people on here, I can get something out of most styles of music, whether that's Hip Hop, pop or metal, chances are something will float your boat, regardless of the colour of the writer/musicians!

Now that I'm older, I easily confess that I like Rock ( some call it white ) music. My very first album that I purchased on my own- 28 years ago when $10 was good money to a kid - was DESTROYER BY Kiss. A black kid who liked Kiss was somewhat strange in my neighborhood, but at that time they were considered cartoonish and commercial, so it was'nt frowned upon. During MPTV's early eighties hey days, before they started playing Black Music, I watched everything that they played. I thought it was cool. In today's climate, it shouldn't matter at all what you choose to listen to or what color you are. Blacks have no more of a claim on Rock & Roll as does any group, when the music is done well, people will listen. [Edited 9/28/04 13:34pm] Jeux Sans Frontiers

Believe it or not, some of the close-minded folks who try to make you feel bad actually envy you. I learned that long ago.Be proud of who you are and march on.You aren't a person out of the cookie cutter.Like Jimi said,"I'm the one who has to die when it's time for me to die." "I'm a pig..so,magic elixir I swill"

As a white person that grew up listening to mostly funk, I know what you mean from the other side of the fence. I started getting more into rock when rap took completely over.
As far as you listening to rock instead of rap and them not understanding....well, the hell with them. They're the ones with a problem with what you like. Hell, you are just doing what you want to do. Personally, I don't see why black people would want to listen to rap, let alone white people. The only thing you are guilty of is having better taste. Andy is a four letter word.

Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

I am a Black woman and get critized all the time because I don't like rap, and I like all other forms of music too. I tell people when are we going to get beyond it being a black or white thing??? Great music is just that no matter who is playing it. I have been to many concerts and have been only one of a few Blacks in attendance. People ask me if the whites are racists towards me when I am there. Tell them not at all, good people come in all shapes,
colors, and forms. Just this weekend I was checking out Lynard Skynard with the Charley Daniels Band. Loved it!!! I love music because there is so much variety and I think it unites people. I hate rap becuase of the negative way it portrays Black people and woman. I would like even if a White person sung it.
