I remember where I was when I heard he has was killed. I was riding in the car with my mom on the way to my grandmothers house and they announced it on the radio that he had been murdered. The station then played "what's going on" , I still every time I hear that song

I recently found myself to be a big Marvin Gaye fan, I started a Midnight Love appreciation thread not so long ago. To what I have heard of his music, It makes me love his music more and more, and his voice is magical. It's a shame he left this world at such a young age . Worlds most beloved Orger

How can you Not Appreciate the Music of Marvin pentz Gaye Jr. Marvin was a true Conduit God Used this man as a tool to speak through him..Listen to "whats goin on" that album is still prophetic today,

I have a few cd's but what I enjoy the most is his boxed set. It's spectacular! Every song is a gem and his voice and lyrics are incredible. I KNOW he would still be making great music today if he was still alive.

Yes, definitely one of the supreme tragedies of Rock/R&B history. What's Going On make me sad too. if only there was a way to go back in time.....

I discovered 'What's Going On' in my Dad's record collection when I was young as I was really intrigued by the cover. A photo of Marvin in a black coat looking troubled. I guess he was at the time, what with Vietnam and evironmental protests; coupled with his own drugs and emotional problems. I was totally mesmerised when I heard it. I still get the same feeling now as I did then listening to it on my Walkman. His voice is amazing and the record has a somewhat dreamy quality to it. A record still terrifyingly relevant today at it was then. A true masterpiece.
It hurts me to think of the tragedy in Marvin's life. Being killed by his own father is the ultimate tragic end but there was so much stuff leading up to that. Marvin had tried to find religion bu ended up losing all of his love and turning everyone against him. I think 'I Want You' is probably my favourite album of his, it's just amazing. The way the vocals are layered makes it sound so steamy and sexy, angelic and sparkly. It's beautiful. Obviously Marvin's a true icon. He's a total sex god with an amazing voice; one of those men who had everything. Yet I still think he was humble too. You have to be beautiful to be able to sing like that.

I just finished Michael Eric Dyson's book about Marvin this afternoon. Some of my faves by him are:
I Want You (entire cd) What's Going On from the boxset there is a gem entitled "My Last Chance" it is one of my favorites of all time. Dream of a Lifetime cd Love Marvin. Love Teena Marie's dedication to him, "My Dear, Mr. Gaye" He is missed. "Money won't buy you happiness but it sure will pay for the search"
