JEFF BUCKLEY - IN MEMORY OF SUCH 'GRACE'...

I wanted to share with and see how many other orgers have perhaps taken the time to listen to this brilliant Artist with the voice of an emotive Angel. I recently viewed him on DVD 'live in Chicago' and was completely taken away by him as a guitarist and such emotional singer.

In his lifetime, he only ever released one album,'Grace'. I've had this album for a few years and it is an incredible piece, all 10 songs so unique to a point of bringing full to the brim of love, anger and confusion. Many of them begin in a subdued manner, but end with some heart rending vocals on Buckley's part. There is a beautiful cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' and the entire album contains some of the most soaring vocals I've ever heard.

It is a mystery knowing what Jeff Buckley would have become if only he'd lived long enough to record a few more albums. Perhaps just another singer and songwriter but with the intensity of 'Grace' he has provided good reason to celebrate his short existence. After his untimely death in 1997, his album 'Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk' was released, as he was recording it just prior to his demise. It consists of half finished songs and demos and is basically a harsh reminder of what he had been going onto. The songs are great, but so rough and hits home the great loss the music world suffered the day that he passed on. I'm expanding my current collection of his music and will eventually purchase the revamped 'Grace', 'Live in Sin-E' and various other boots available too.

It's never over, a kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder...it's never over, all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her...it's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter...it's never over, she's a tear that hangs inside my soul forever... Jeff Buckley

Totally agree with you...this guy had an incredible gift. It's a damn shame he could only complete one album but i think it's a testament to his genius that just one album made him immortal. My favorite discs still are the expanded version of live @ sin-é. Thank god people thought of recording this...I haven't picked up the various compilations of unreleased material yet but I'll get around doin so.

By the way, does anyone have the 'live @ olympia' cd? any good?

I totally agreed with all of you who posted on this thread. I was first introduced to his music by watching his concert on MuchMusic in 94. This concert difinitely brings back good memories. It is a shame that he had a tragic dealth in Cinncinati. My favorite songs from him were Grace, Last Goodbye, and Everybody Here Wants You.

JEFF BUCKLEY is indeed the best thing that has happened towards real music in years. He violently reminds me of myself in reference to the quest for pure emotion being poured into song and music. I have everything on him possible. Check out his website if any get the chance. www.jeffbuckley.com If any know of any more live concert footage please holla' at your boy. Rest in peace dear friend.

Everybody Here Wants You

bow dove pray R.I.P. pray dove bow

Twenty-nine pearls in your kiss
A singing smile
Coffee smell and lilac skin
Your flame in me

Twenty-nine pearls in your kiss
A singing smile
Coffee smell and lilac skin
Your flame in me

I’m only here for this moment

I know everybody here wants you
I know everybody here thinks he needs you
I’ll be waiting right here just to show you
How our love will blow it all away

Hmm, such a thing of wonder in this crowd
I’m a stranger in this town
You’re free with me
And our eyes locked in downcast love
I sit here proud
Even now you’re undressed in your dreams with me

Oh, I’m only here for this moment

I know everybody here wants you
I know everybody here thinks he needs you
I’ll be waiting right here just to show you
How our love will blow it all away

I know the tears we cried
Have dried on yesterday
The sea of fools has parted for us
There’s nothing in our way
My love

Don’t you see, don’t you see?
You’re just the torch to put the flame to all our guilt and shame
And I’ll rise like an ember in your name

I know I, I know I
I know everybody here wants you
I know everybody here thinks he needs you
I’ll be waiting right here just to show you
Oh let me show you
That love can rise, rise just like embers

Love can taste like the wine of the ages, oh babe,
And I know they all looks so good from a distance
But I tell you I’m the one

I know everybody here, well, thinks he needs you
Think he needs you
And I’ll be waiting right here just to show you.

hehe did someone say Jeff Buckley? wink ..... PanthaGirl be sure to check out the book "Dream Brother" by David Browne. Covers the lives and music of Jeff and Tim Buckley. Another book to seek out is "A Wished For Song" by Jeff's photographer, Merri Cyr. Not as easily obtained in Australia but definately worth ordering online.

I bought the Grace Legacy Edition on the weekend and I am totally swooned by Forget Her. The Live at Sine Legacy Edition is also a must have.

Saw him live in concert and if anything his voice was more amazing...Lover you shoulda come over and Hallelujah were incredible... eek

I was working in the theatre at the time and he came in the day to check out the venue. I had The Smiths playing and he was grooving away to it...I have to say he looked really greasy and nothing like he looked on the cover of Grace. My friend got his copy signed.

I disagree with you as far as Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk,. I think its a great document and shows what Jeffs next step was going to be...it wasn't going to be some great huge quantum leap forward but just more of the same 'good songs great voice'

I found out about his passing when I was on the bus with a friend and I said to him how I'd found someone new to worship and he said "oh didn't you hear he's missing presumed drowned..they're looking for a body" sad

Thanks for Ur post and opinion. Regarding Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk I must point out that U misread my post because if U look into my words more carefully I wrote 'It consists of half finished songs and demos and is basically a harsh reminder of what he had been going onto. The songs are great, but so rough and hits home the great loss the music world suffered the day that he passed on. It basically means it was an acute example of what he was recording at the time, genius nonetheless, and because of the brilliance of the album it is a tragic loss knowing the outstanding work he was continuing to produce. Perhaps that clears it up a little more for U.

peace

Jeff Buckley is one of my favourite artists, period.

The new remastered Grace anniversary edition is great - and the bonus discs (a dvd with videos - some of which are just cobbled together rubbish, but a few goodies and a documentary which has been seen before, but more importantly a second disc with wonderful cover versions (like nina simone's the other woman, dylan etc. and original tracks)) are well worth the money.

live in chicago is magnificent, as is live at Sine.

The guy's voice is just haunting, evocative, wonderful, and his guitar playing is at times, outstanding. Particularly his arrangements of songs we've all heard before - i've never heard such an impressive cover artist. He truly made songs his own.

i could list my favourite tracks all day, and they change all the time, but right now i'm really feeling:

forget her
nightmares by the sea
kangaroo
new year's prayer
mama you been on my mind
satisfied mind
what will you say (with Alim Qazimov) &
je n'en connais pas le fin (both on the l'Olympia CD)
dream brother
so real
i know it's over

and of course, the incomparable Hallelujah.

worship

RIP jeff. you are so, so, so missed. pray

Grace is one of my favorite albums ever. Jeff Buckley was absolutely gorgeous - his voice, his lyrics, his beautiful face and hair. That he died so young and under such circumstances is so sad. I love "Lover, You Should've Come Over" especially. That album is nearly perfect. More people should listen to him.

He went for a swim in Memphis in the Mississippi and didn't come out. He was singing Whole Lotta Love apparently and his body was missing for a few days before found. Bummed me out when he died.

Man, I just got the Legacy Edition of Grace, and it's the best $30 I've spent in a long time. Listening to the remaster, I feel like I'm hearing the album all over again. Such a shame that such a talented artist was taken from this world so soon. Rest In Peace Jeff, you are immortal thru your music.
