hmmm Well, my man is the "master of melancholy". I'd say Kind of Blue is mostly mid-tempo. Porgy And Bess has many upbeat tunes on it.
In A Silent Way is cool if you want something to drive to work with, or some background music for a gathering with friends. My first was Kind of Blue, and it was the perfect intro for me.

Kind of Blue is awesome, Birth of the Cool is more upbeat. Bitches Brew is much better than In a Silent Way IMHO. Really, there's SO much quality Davis music and if you don't like melancholy/contemplative music, you will after getting into Miles Davis.

Be aware that Birth of the Cool is very, very OLD. Like, vocal jazz old. Like, playin' in the elevator, put you to sleep old.

Bitches Brew is a trip and a half. If you dig Rainbow Children, try Bitches Brew or any of the Live at the Fillmore discs recorded in the same time period.

Volume One (Blue Note): A good primer for Miles' music. Features tunes at a variety of tempos and moods.

Milestones: A great album, including the stellar title track.

I'd recommed "Miles Ahead".
The first track "Springsville" is one of the more happier compositions Mr. Davis has done. In Miles' autobiography I believe it was Teo Macero(producer) who said if you're ever depressed, listen to "Springsville". "Miles Ahead" is a laid back happy tune as well.

Not really a Miles album -- some would argue to the contrary, but:

Oh, we're posting the album coers now, are we? OK...

Some hardcore Miles fans would disagree, but his work with Gil Evans are mellow masterpieces. This one sounds great on vinyl:

esp. I cant hear this album enough. Its weird, cause whatever mood I seem to be in, somehow the music on this album always matches it. There are so many. In a Silent Way.. Miles Ahead, Sketches of Spain. Hell. Do this..go to the Miles Davis section, take out 1 of each of these titles, close your eyes, point and whatever one you have chosen is a great place to start. You cant go wrong.

peace.

I like old jazz, and I don't think it's boring. Give me Duke Ellington or Louis Armstrong any day. In fact, I think all the most fun genres of jazz are the ones that predate Miles eg New Orleans, Big Band and Be bob (though Miles got his start in be bob).

He has so much in so many different styles, you need to decide which style you're in the mood for--bebop, cool, bigger band, electric, avant garde, or pop.

Kind of Blue is probably his most classic album, but it defined the style so totally that it might just sound like ordinary jazz on first listen.

I like Miles Ahead because the arrangements are so amazing, and the songs are interesting & original. It's kind of like big band, but weirder. Another in this style is Sketches of Spain.

For electric stuff, Bitches Brew is always popular, but maybe hard to get into for the average listener.

I love Tribute to Jack Johnson and On the Corner for electric stuff, they are funky and easy to like, particularly Jack Johnson.

And if you want to listen in your bed at 4 am, get In a Silent Way.

Of these, I like Miles Ahead the best.

I also agree with the other orgers. I definitely like how he reworked the music from Porky and Bess. My favorite cut on that album is Summertime.

Miles Smiles. Energetic, mellow, contemplative, joyful. Personal faves: Circle and Footprints.

If you really wan't to here "Sum Next Shyt" try "Dark Magus" It is a live set that comes from a dark place and flies into the stratosphere!!! It really is like Miles does Hendrixx!

Hey Lennon, I got Amandla a while back as a cassette cut-out... check it out over at amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/exe...0?v=glance

I haven't listened to this one in a while but I remember it having electronic beats... so it might feel more upbeat than his other stuff. You can listen to samples on amazon to get an idea of what it sounds like before you buy.

Hey, very cool. I never said boring - maybe I should clarify by saying "incredibly mellow as compared with most of his later output that I have heard, and most of the other albums recommended on this thread." razz

For some good hard bop, try Steamin' With the Miles Davis Quintet - "Salt Peanuts" is a god one. "Salt Peanuts!"

You're right, Birth of the Cool is more mellow, but I think that's kinda the point. Anyway, yes salt peanuts, whoever does it, is a great song (Diz's is my favorite version obviously)
