Battle Of The "Bands": New Edition, 5 Star, or The Jets? I was getting ready to call this thread "The Battle Of the Wannabe Jacksons", but then I would have to add more groups.
Anyway, yesterday I finally got 5 Star's an The Jets' Greatest Hits on CD (and "Romance 1600 ) I was reminded of how disappointed I was/am with the lack of success of these two groups. The Jets were funky and didn't sound at all like a "kid" group, musically or lyrically. 5 Star's vocals were beautiful and I loved their style and songs. Then there's New Edition, still around (kinda) after releasing their first lp 21 years ago. So go ahead and tell me, dammit... Who do ya love? 5 Star!!! I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Don't know who 5 Star is...
I think I enjoyed the Jets more...I had (still have) the Crush on You and Private Number 45's...don't know where the LP went to ...so I suppose The Jets. But honestly...right now...none. I have SO moved on. Christian Zombie Vampires

I have SO moved on. 5 Star had the following songs: All Fall Down Love Take Over Another Weekend Let Me Be The One (if you're into Mandy Moore, she did a remake of this song on one of her albums) Strong As Steel (this track was written by Diane Warren) Can't Wait Another Minute The group consisted of three sisters and two brothers....the sisters wore a ton of make - up (Doris, one of the sisters in the group was their make-up artist ). They were from the UK but were very popular in the states in the 80's. [Edited 9/22/04 17:43pm] Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight

OK, but think about this: What is the ratio of people who still listen to The Jets and 5 Star (without guilt) to the ratio of New Edition(who are still going strong) listeners? I rest my case. Again 5 Who assed you anywho? Shouldn't you be starting a Cure thread somewhere?

I'll be the contrarian and go with The Jets.
Sucker for these tunes, and yes I had the album. Crush On You You Got It All (sounds like something DeBarge could have done) Curiosity tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I do like all three, but my vote's gonna go to The Jets. I don't think any one of these groups has more talent per se than the next, but I'm giving it to them since they actually played some instruments. As much as I like New Edition, not a one of 'em can sing.

My favorite of the three is The Jets. I like New Edition's first two albums but I still like The Jets better. New Edition was never the same after Bobby Brown was replaced by Johnny Gill. I didn't like anything that 5 Star did. Andy is a four letter word.

I like The Jets & New Edition equally, only thing I remember from 5 Star was "I can't wait" which was a cool little jam back when.....I think New Edition sounds better with Johnny instead of Bobby. I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back. I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there. I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish. And I am

New Edition has been the most consistent and they had a longer run than the other two groups.Plus, they put out some truly outstanding singles...."Is This The End?","Jealous Girl","Cool It Now","Mr.Telephone Man","A Little Bit Of Love (Is All It Takes)","Lost In Love" and numerous others.
But The Jets are cool with me too.I saw them in concert in March 1986 on a bill with Ready For The World and Doug E. Fresh with Slick Rick. They specialized in a slick R&B/dance sound and they had one especially brilliant single, the ballad "You Got It All".Love that song! But I also like their uptempo jams like "Curiosity","Crush On You","Private Number","Cross My Broken Heart" and my favorite "I Do You". Five Star deserves special mention for their excellent 1986 hit single "Let Me Be The One".They were a fun, charming family group and they came out at a time when DeBarge (who were also compared to the Jacksons) were beginning to fade out.By the late-80s,Five Star were decidedly "too wholesome" for an audience that was starting to embrace the edgier sounds of hip-hop. so,I gotta go with New Edition, although I like all three groups

The funny thing is...The Jets could indeed play instruments, but they NEVER played their own music on their albums. It was all played by studio musicians.Which is odd, because I saw them in concert and they seemed like they knew what they were doing.

I'm'a give it to The Jets. Even though New Edition had more mainstream success out of the lot, I still liked The Jets persona, music and stage presence. They had great songs like "Crush On You" and "You've Got It All" that I still play to this day -- so they get my vote.

I picked New Edition based on popularity but I never cared for them until they got with Jam & Lewis. NE just didn't do it for me.
I liked the Jets though and have a special place for 5 Star. Maybe because they reminded me of the Jackson Five if Rebbie and LaToya or LaToya and Janet had joined or a revamped version of the Sylvers. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

But just know that 5 Star's version of "Hide and Seek" kills the one by New Edition. Check it out sometime... I had to edit this to point out that "Can You Stand The Rain", which is the best song on that NE album (and probably their best song ever) is a rip-off of "All In My Mind" by Full Force. Jam and Lewis copied FF a lot back in those days. [Edited 9/23/04 15:14pm] I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!
