Jill Scott on Tavis Smiley

Saw this beautiful, articulate and talented woman interviewed by Tavis Smiley last night.
What a joy to hear a sane voice that's not trying to be hip, not trying to bling, just being real.
She performed My Petition with just a simple acoustic guitar and upright bass accompaniment.
Not a lip sync in sight. The woman can sing.

If she's an example of where the neo-soul movement is going, it's in good hands.

Tavis: What's the most significant thing that changed in the definition of who Jill Scott is from 4 years ago?

Jill: The biggest thing is that I took some time off, and I had a chance to really look at my existence. I had been on the road for 2 years, which was wonderful. Performed in front of a lot of people, had a great time, but I really needed to go home and reevaluate, you know, if this was for me. You know, if fame was for me, because it's uncomfortable. You know, if being on the road was for me, because I missed home. So I took off some time and just--

Tavis: Let me jump in. You weren't questioning the music, though.

Jill: Not the music.

Tavis: Just the fame and the exposure and all that.

Jill: Just the stuff that comes with it.

She deserves every bit of praise and respect that comes her way. I too hope for her that the demands of " The Life & Career" don't tear her apart. I don't want to see her labled the next Roberta Flack, Phyllis Hyman or saviour for soul music. Let this woman be her own person.

Yeah, Jill reminds me of how people "used to be". It is very cool to see a woman in the industry that's not trying to be a Beyonce. And yes, unlike a lot of other folks out there now, she can sing.

She was completely poised, funny and playful with Tavis. AND I'm especially happy that she sang my fave song from the disc - 'My Petition'.
