People keep saying 'Pet Sounds' influenced Sgt Peppers but I don't hear it

what am I missing, that I don't hear the influence??? I love Sgt peppers, and I've listened to Pet Sounds, but I'm not understanding what some people mean when they say that it influenced the Beatles.

i think it's less the sound of the album and more the way they made the album and the direction the beach boys took in creating it. for a band as poppy and bubblegum as the beach boys, "pet sounds" was a pretty out-there, experimental record for them to make...even if by today's standards, it seems all kinds of tame. i think it's that the beach boys took their work up a few notches that influenced the beatles more than anything else.

oooh okay, I think I'm beginning to understand now nod Because for YEARS, I had dismissed the Beach Boys as nothing but beach bums who made music lol

It's not just "people" but the Beatles themselves that stated this.
Paul McCartney has claimed it's his favorite album.

"It was later...it was PET SOUNDS that blew me out of the water.
First of all, it was Brian's writing. I love the album so much.
I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life.
I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album.
I was into the writing and the songs."

~Paul McCartney

This goes in a vicious circle because Brian Wilson credits Rubber Soul as the inspiration for Pet Sounds.

As the experts before me have stated, it's more in the writing and editing processes (approaches to production and such).

National Public Radio deconstructed the production of "Pet Sounds," a few years ago. I'm not a fan of the group, but I was really impressed.

I have pet sounds, and its wonderful.

I think Sgt. Pepper is better, in many ways.. their studio wizardry, and vocals are cutting edge and experimental.. the whole damn album is

A Day In The Life is one of the most innovative Beatle songs, and of that era.. truely great songwriting, and musicianship...

Whassup TBare?

The Beach Boys are bad.
You gotta get into Pet Sounds!

Wouldn't It Be Nice
God Only Knows

In My Room
There’s a world where I can go and tell my secrets to
In my room, in my room
In this world I lock out all my worries and my fears
In my room, in my room

Do my dreaming and my scheming
Lie awake and pray
Do my crying and my sighing
Laugh at yesterday

Now it’s dark and I’m alone
But I won’t be afraid
In my room, in my room
In my room, in my room
In my room, in my room

Beautiful tune.

heya threadbare! wave

i really like "pet sounds" even though i've never been a big fan of the beach boys. i wouldn't call myself a "fan" of the album, but it's one i'm really glad i own, and it's certainly one i think everyone should have a copy of, even if it's just for the sake of reference.

i have to admit that i really like david bowie's cover of "god only knows" from the otherwise pukey "tonight" album...that, and sean lennon's "into the sun" album is ever so blatantly inspired by "pet sounds", and it's a really beautiful album (when's that kid putting out another record?!).

I love "Pet Sounds", and also what would have been Brian Wilson's next huge step..."Smile". I put my own version together (like so many BB fans).

I got the "Pet Sounds" box set 4 years ago and it is great. The 1st disc is a stereo version of PS also early takes of some of the songs as a bonus on disc 1. Disc 2 has the instruments minus the vocals, and disc 3 has the vocals only. Very nice.

Hope all of you who are diggin' on Pet Sounds are ready for the release of Smile next week. Not the '67 sessions, but an all new finished recording which promises to be amazing if Brian Wilson's performances of the piece this year are any indication. Smile is the real shiznit in Brian's creative past, his definite peak. I collect all of the different bootleg versions of Smile myself! You can never have enough Smile in your life. For those who don't know, Smile was intended originally to follow Pet Sounds, and would've been released prior to Sgt Pepper's if he had been able to complete it as scheduled. Too bad he broke down at the time. But for me this year is just heating up, with the release of Smile finally and also a North American tour featuring Smile! It's what the world has been waiting for for 37 years!!

Can you tell I'm excited?
