i love classic stuff from the '60s and '70s, but i can't get with the majority of contemporary r&b - it all sounds too slick and overproduced. the most recent r&b i've gotten into is macy gray, and she's not that recent at all, really. confused

Yeah, we gotta be more selective than ever with the current ARR'A and B.
I grew up loving Luther, Marvin and The Temptations. Hey, the way that came out sounds like one big group. Can you imagine; "Ladies and gentlemen give it up for Luther, Marvin and The Temptations!" I'd buy some bloomers to throw on that stage.

I agree. Although I did like some of the music that was coming out around 1996-97, or around there somewhere. Stuff like D'Angelo, Rahsaan Patterson, Eric Benet, Aaliyah, and Maxwell. That's about it though. I actually haven't liked anything since that time period, when it comes to modern R&B.

I suppose I could add Meshell, but I wouldn't call her R&B. I can't categorize that woman, she's just so damn funky. worship

Co-sign! The only current R&B artist that I follow is Mary J Blige. For the most part, anyone being adverturous in R&B isn't doing a whole album's worth of good stuff. Just a slickly produced single to reel 'em in, then an album's worth of filler. 70s is my fave R&B decade, but I think there were a slew of good artists in the early 80s as well.

Right now, Jill Scott, Dwele, Van Hunt and Musiq are in the rotation, and I need to include Amp Fiddler in that too.

Thanks so much! I'm going to check this out! I'm always looking for good neo-soul music. In fact, I just got XM Satellite radio because they have an amazing station 61 - The Flow. Anyways, my favorite R&B artists in the "neo-soul" category are:

Angie Stone - all albums
Jill Scott - all albums
Erykah Badu - all albums
Amel Larrieux - Bravebird
Alicia Keyes - Songs in A Minor
Goapele - Even Closer
Meshell N'Dgeocello - all albums
Sade - all albums
India Arie - all albums
Lauryn Hill - Miseducation (it's been so long I almost forgot her!!)

Rahsaan Patterson - all albums
Van Hunt
Bilal
Martin Luther (similar, but better than Bilal)
Maxwell
Kenny Lattimore
Eric Benet
D'Angelo
Sweetback - various vocalists

I don't like: Calvin (I only like his duet with Angie), Musiq (he annoys me after a while), Anthony Hamilton

The 70s was definitely the golden age of R&B. That's when you had Curtis, Stevie, James, Sly and Marvin in their prime, and when you had fantastic funk/rock bands like EWF, P-Funk, and the highly underrated Tower of Power.
