Missy Elliott: Played out?

OK, I want to field some opinions on this matter. I'd like to know if you think Missy Elliott is played out. The reason I'm saying this is because, to me, her sound is getting tired and she's not doing anything musically exciting anymore. When she first dropped with "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" I was like, "whoa who is this chick with the trash bag?" But after "Under Construction," she just went downhill in my book. How many times can we hear the "ficky ficky" and the simplistic rhyme patterns? I'm sick of hearing her a** on everyone's song. That "Party to Damascus" track with Wyclef was abysmal (I don't know who made it worse: Missy or Wyclef? Bad combo altogether). Plus, her songs don't really have a long shelf life. Her records are hot for the moment, but then they just fizzle out (maybe too much radio saturation leads to that). I can't listen to "Work It" or "Pass That Dutch" without covering my ears.

What's your thoughts on Missy Elliott?

Is she still hot musically in your book or does she need to do some time away from the spotlight?

SassyBritches

i think everything she does sounds the same. when she remixes someone's song she just makes that song sound like one of her typical tracks. she was something special when she first hit but she needs a new style or somethin'.

Love her. She's about as good as it gets for rap music.

nod Don't get me wrong. It's good to see a women do her thing. However the methods in which she goes about reaching her status, I don't agree with because her music seems to predicable and repetitive.

well she has actually progressed stylistically since her first album...

there is a great sense of fun in her music and her videos are always hot too...

it's good to see a celebrity who doesn't take themselves so seriously

Don't get me wrong now. I think it's refreshing to see a rapper (hmm? should I call her that?) talk about subjects other than gats, hoez and ice. When she does talk about these things, she does so in a extravagant or flippant way so it's not too serious.

Apparently, she has a new show on UPN this fall called "The Missy Elliott Project." I heard it's a cross between American Idol and The Apprentice -- maybe this'll be her saving grace for me.

Never bought an album, like tracks here & there (Hot Boys, One Minute Man, guesting on Janet's track). She's alright, but a break is never bad. If she takes one, she should take Puffery with her blackeye

Errr... I was never a fan of that track. My favorite material from Missy came from her first LP Supa Dupa Fly and Da Real World. The latter had some cuts on there I dug like "Busa Rhyme," "You Don't Know (feat. Lil Mo)" and "Smooth Chick."

I wouldn't necessarily say that she is "played out",but I think her sound is getting old and tired. She and her producer Timbalind are recyling the same beats and ideas. It might be time for her to try something new and bold.

btw, whatever happened to Tweet? Did her second CD ever come out?

You had me here!!!! falloff

But seriously, I believe Missy is an extremely talented individual. She can do it all-write, rap, sing, produce. Her only problem, IMO, is that here recently she seems to be stuck in the 80s hip-hop era and won't let it go. Don't get me wrong, it's cool to recognize where hip hop has come, but let it go already! It's about to be 2005 and she's trying to bring back Adidas sweatsuits, furry Kangols and thick rope chains. When she first came out, she and Timbaland brought a new sound that no one ever heard of and it was cool! Now, they're being pushed to the backburner because they're trying to re-create a magic that has already been done...16 years ago!

I don't think her career is washed up (although her last album, This Is Not A Test, should have been named This Is A Hot Mess) but it is rather dry right now. All the hollaring in her songs is old and annoying and her production is starting to sound the same (with all the sampling and whatnot). She and Timbo need to take theirselves back to Virginia, get humbled and inspired to put out something hot.

By the way, if you haven't heard, check out Tweet's new single "Turn The Lights Off" featuring Missy. Tweet's voice has never sounded better, but again, Missy's hollaring takes away from the track. thumbs up!

See, this reminds me of "Shawna" (sp?), that chick rapping with Ludacris on his latest. She's got the drawl down. It reminds me of Missy.

eek Please don't tell me you mean the Southern drawl! shake You can tell she's straight from Chicago. I'm from Atlanta and can tell in a heartbeat when someone's not from 'round here! lol Same goes for Ludacris. Although he's lived in Atlanta since he was like 8 or 9, you can still tell that he's not a native ATLien...his Chi-Town accent sticks out like a sore thumb.

Missy got mad talent(her song lyrics writting is her best. Who would think of writing something like Beyonce's "Signs").

The way I see it, I think she's repeating her shit on purpose just to get out of her contract/label and then get back on track.

She & her potna floored everybody with that Aaliyah's "One In A Million" album.
